  1. Do you mind if I ask you the name of the other school that offered you admission? I suggest that you talk with your professors about your dilemma and ask them their opinion on where you should go. They probably know better than any of us the strengths and weaknesses of the programs you applied to. Best wishes on your decision!
  2. Is there a chance that you will get funding from Seattle after your first year?
  3. Congratulations! Did he apply to the MA or PhD program in history?
  4. I applied to the MA program. What about you Minnesotan and totallyfreakingout?
  5. I am sorry. All of us deserve more than that. After all, to apply to one school often costs well over one hundred US dollars not to mention our time and dedication.
  6. I am sorry. In all honesty I forgot to include in the earlier post what the program administrator had told me about how both accepted and rejected applicants will be notified. Here is to hoping for the best!
  7. I forgot to add what those rejected will receive. Seattle is not number one or in the top three in the list of the schools I applied to, but I want to know whether I was accepted or rejected as soon as possible. Did you apply as well?
  8. I called the program administrator on Friday, and she told me that those who offered admission will either receive a phone call or an email.
  9. So, we should be hearing soon from Seattle. Or has anyone heard already?
  10. One of my friends is having this exact same problem albeit with different schools. If you do accept the offer from NYU and then hear back from Michigan that you are in after the April 15 deadline, I believe you can request to have your acceptance withdrawn from NYU. I think you will need a written statement releasing you from the contract with NYU. Hope everything works out, and congratulations on the acceptance to NYU!
  11. Did the professor or administrator at Harvard really write that to you?
  12. I am trying my best to avoid schoolwork, and this is what I found: The history department lists the recent successful placements on its website. It looks like a number of them have found tenture-track positions in the US. Hope this helps!
  13. Well, I suppose it also depends on what field you are in. Have you asked your professors? Most definitely you will have an edge on the job market in Canada with a degree from Toronto, but I am not sure how it translates over here.
  14. Congratulations! Did you apply for the MA or PhD program in history? University of Toronto is a fantastic school.
  15. justinclark: were you able to get in touch with the program administrator?
  16. For those interested: I emailed the admissions office, and they told me that the doctoral program in history at Columbia received between 500 and 600 applications and accepted around 20 to 25 students for the 2008-09 academic year.
  17. Well, he mentioned in earlier posts that he is married to someone who is a professor English, has an MA, was in law school at one point in his life, and turned down a six-figure salary in hopes of pursuing a career in academia. Wow. I feel like a stalker. Anyways, I hope everything works out, UofChihopeful!
  18. I agree with the above suggestion about contacting the professors at Chicago and asking them for their reasoning behind the decision to reject your application for this year. In fact, I would email the professors at Penn and Northwestern too. From reading your posts, I cannot help but feel that you should apply again in the near future. May I ask why you only applied to three schools this year?
  19. Thank you for posting the email from the program administrator. Do you have more schools to hear from other than Chicago, Northwestern, and Penn? I truly wish you the best!
  20. I feel the same. I was in shock when the program administrator told me the acceptance rate -- quite high for a top 25 program.
  21. Why was it so competitive this year? Bad economy?
  22. For those interested: at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the doctoral program in history received 202 applicants. It accepted 40 with a 20% acceptance rate. I have to agree with Minnesotan. I would not be surprised at all if the number of applicants this year was the double for many institutions.
  23. So do most masters programs have visit weekends as well? I have been accepted to a MA program in addition to a PhD one, and I want to visit both. Sorry for the off-topic question.
  24. I know what you mean! Now that I have a decent idea of where I will be going in the fall, I am also starting to worry about all the work I have to do as a graduate student. The first couple years are hard no doubt. A number of people do drop out. However, if you are as dedicated as you seem to be, you will do just fine. As for preparing, I am planning to do as much reading as possible over the summer while working on my language skills.
