Oy... Well unlikely stuff does happen. In your case it could be number #5 rejecting their admission so that his offer goes to the next guy. I know that on the forums some guy once said he was number 11 or 12 to a university so he asked if any people who got acceptances to his uni were gonna reject it or not.
-
Well, there's no shame in applying and getting accepted to a place that's desperate for you (especially if you don't see any bright expectations/acceptances from your desired programs)
-
Ok.... someone is trying to be creepy... Well, since you don't want to go you can just NOT answer or reply to them. Just ignore until the deadline.

I just got an interview for Delaware on Monday with Heinz. And I will honest to God pee my pants unless someone tells me what to do.

What Linguistics Program is Right for Me?
hoviariel replied to acircleda@'s topic in Linguistics Forum
Yeah... Applied is often not found in linguistics departments but in Education or English departments. It depends on what your goals are though. If you're more aligned to language acquisition (and understanding it as a linguistic phenomenon) then linguistics departments are your niche, but if you're more into applying your knowledge in language teaching, well that is something not found in most linguistics departments. -
What Linguistics Program is Right for Me?

That is a lot... But it seems that you mostly are learning towards FLA/SLA/Applied. Morphology, Phonetics, and Comp Ling don't seem to be things that interest you in themselves but in terms of how they interact with SLA/Applied, and thankfully they tend to get subsumed in Applied linguistics because language education/acquisition would involve using computer aids and knowing morphemes If I were you I'ld focus on finding a good Applied program that has a good psycho orientation or backup. And a lot of Applied programs provide courses (even if just one) on computer technology. But get rid of Washington because it's more NLP then Applied. http://www.linguisticsociety.org/programs Feel free to use this directory to find other appropriate programs in Applied or Acquisition. It is super-useful -
Well as long as the deadline to accept the acceptance is after the deadline to find out about the other 2 unis, you're okay I guess. But it wouldn't hurt to try to predict your acceptance chances at the the other 2

Well, they should at least offer a consolation prize like whisky.
-
I wonder if there's a way we can get a refund from our rejects...
-
Well they're just being b*tches.

Austin rejections are out

You can use that QS Subject ranking http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2013/linguistics But to be honest the only way to know if a school is good at a field is if you just go to their site and read about their professors Also, most schools don't give the acceptance rates of their individual departments. But just assume that the higher the rank, the lest the opportunities.

Oy vey it'll be gradmagedon

Ow. Well, ideally it would be awesome if you could do both PhDs so you could say you have a specialty in two closely related areas. But, I don't think it's possible to defer the 'top' for 3 years in the first. If anything, you may have to re-apply. But, maybe if you talked to your socio-linguistic POI he could give you better advice about this. Hell, the guy would be so excited with having a socio student getting non-linguistic grad education that he would look forward to getting you back in 3 years.
-
to the deferring: I don't think you can defer that long. It's usually like a semester or a year because of issues like family or emergencies or 'exploration'. Besides, even if you could, you would not have a reason to go into a phd program right after doing another one. If I were you, I'ld either go with the 3-year and maybe apply for post-doc at ur top, or try to see if it's 'nice' to cancel your 3-year-place acceptance and go to the 'top' one To interview: there's no clear answer because if you look around the cafe, you'll find people saying that they went to get interviewed because the uni wasn't sure how they were a good fit, but other people send interviews to their top 20 or so to get to know their desired candidates more to compare em better. And your question wasn't bad in itself, it would more about the tone of voice and you had phrased it.

Well I applied to UPenn but I'm not a fan of phonology. I'm more of a comp ling kid with a thing for morpho-syntax+semantics

According to the search results, rejections will come around early-mid Feb and acceptances mid-Feb-March. But there's a lot of variation here because some rejections don't come till way in March and the same for acceptance. I guess UMich is gonna send em when it wants to send em You know. I don't get these grad schools. How is a person being compared with 99 other people to get into a top 10? GRE and TOEFL is mostly cut-offs and boosts. LOR, SOP, and Sample are gold. But even then: a LOR will love you otherwise they wouldn't be writing you anyway, whatever goals you truly have will be in your SOP and you wouldn't be writing an SOP for a grad school application unless you got to tweak your SOP to fit into the faculty research interests, and heck a good analytical paper is a good analytical paper
-
I hope that means I get a pony <3
-
Kewl.... But probably more of a noise sound than a linguistic sound
-
Well at least other people get to see this:
-
In hindsight, I should've put in an actual faculty name or two in my SOP instead of providing research interests. Oh well...
-
Maybe internationals or out-of-state applicants get an excuse God I wish I could predict the future.
-
I hope this applies to UMich
-
Notice Friday? Does that mean that they send out interview requests by email or post rejections on their application site like OSU does?

I'm gonna ask a very noob-ish question: does anyone know a grad-student-oriented database for comparing between two cities' living standards/expensiveness or to collect healthy grad-student-friendly recipes and grocery lists?
