  1. Is anyone applying for CalSWEC at any schools? I have only applied for the CalSWEC for CSUF. Has anyone done it for CSULB? I don't recall seeing anything about applying for it... just a check box in the application.

  2. I received an email today inviting me to an interview! Oh man..I'm so nervous now.

no way! congrats and good luck!!! When did you apply? I applied oct 21.. I'm nervous now ahhhhh. Will you share your gpa, major, and experience if you dont mind :)

  3. So when I began my application back in October, my first choice was USC. However, I only jumped to that conclusion because it is a prestigious school and ranked 11 in the US News. I was ecstatic when I was accepted only a month after applying! I felt on top of the world and thought, "If I got into USC, I can get into anywhere else I want!" One of my classmate's dream is to get into USC and we were applying to the exact programs at the exact schools. When I got my letter, I for sure thought that she would be accepted soon after. I was wrong. She did not apply too long after me (I applied early October) and has yet to hear from them. She has also been put on the pending list for CSULB when that was her very last choice. I know she'll make it in all of her programs soon enough!

For MSW programs, your resume and experience is crucial. And that's where I got lucky. Since 18, and now 22, I have worked at a total of 10 schools now. When I talk to admission counselors, they are very impressed with my experience and less about my grades. In my entire 4 years of undergrad, I got a 3.2 overall GPA and a 3.4 upper division, not a GPA you'd expect for USC, right? Or any school for the matter. But if your passion and commitment is in one specific area, I am sure you have a higher chance of being admitted than a 4.0 scholar with zero experience in the field. It's sorta like you already know what you're dealing with instead of jumping into a brand new situation.

I have talked to several mentors in the educational field who have told me to go to a state school. As you may have heard, all MSW schools must be accredited. The MSW professors I have talked to, some who went to USC, has advised me to go anywhere that I can afford because it's what you put in the program that will get you far in your career, not where you go. Many employees will ask more about your experience than where you got your degree from. So think twice before you're willing to be in debt 90 grand. A teacher I worked with told me that that money should be the down on my future house and also could buy me 3 cars. Well.... that definitely got me thinking!

  4. Have you guys been logging onto your titan online portal? I've checked my to-do lists several times to see if they have received my transcripts and I am happy to see that they finally did! However, it says I have to submit my high school transcript as well. Is this real? Why are high school grades still important when I am seeking a master's degree? Did anyone submit their official hs transcript?

  5. I applied to USC. Still waiting.. waiting is a killer.  I went to an information session awhile back and they said only 22% get accepted. Those who applied to USC what was your GPA? I have a 3.8 but no volunteer experience but I was in the Navy for 10 years.

I got in with a 3.2. However, I have had countless years of experience in 8 different schools. I would think everyone would want a balance for both gpa and work experience. Perhaps I was lucky? I applied right when admissions opened up.

  6. I actually had this same issue last year and was super torn between going to usc or a state college. I have talked to many, many people about this and it really did come down to the price tag. All MSW programs must be accredited so they are all basically the same. A lot of MSW professors who did go to USC tells me that it isn't where you go but what you put in your program that makes the difference. And in all honesty, social workers don't graduate and immediately earn six figures so paying 90k for two years of grad school is ridiculous.

  7. Yes, I applied to USC and CSUF. My first choice used to be USC until I found out it was ridiculously expensive. My first choice is now CSULB. I went there for my undergrad and it is a great campus. I would love to be back. LB sent me an email on December 16 saying they received my application and a link to check the status of my application. So far, no answer yet  :(

  8. CSUF has interviews? I applied in November. I also applied to the CalSWEC. I do not think they are on a rolling admissions basis like LB is so I am guessing they will send out acceptance/ rejection letters around the same time.

  9. Thank you for that! I really hope so. I started my application for USC but the price tag is the only thing holding me back a bit :( I am thinking of just applying and then seeing what they offer. I am also hoping CSULB takes that into consideration. My GPA is a 3.5 but I got my BA in Liberal Studies so idk if that will affect my chances.

When did you submit your CSULB app?

My BA is in Sociology with a minor in Psychology so I think you're good there. 3.5 is a great GPA! I submitted my app in early December. Have you submitted?

  10. I attended an info session...They asked that we state whether each job was part or full-time. So, I added that on my resume. I don't recall if they mentioned how many years of work experience they look for, but they did stress wrk experience. I have a total of 5 years in counseling and case management w/in MH.

What counseling did you do? I want to become a high school counselor after I get my MSW! I am also a case manager right now at a continuation high school, working with truant students.

  11. And for experience. I don't have much in social services but I have been working in a low income middle school for 5 years. Helping children who have emotional, behavioral and academic challenges. And I currently started volunteering at a social service agency. Ahhhh this is nerve wrecking. I hope my experience is some what good. :/

I think that is acceptable! I have worked in 8 schools within two districts and my ultimate goal in social work is to work in schools anyway so USC really liked that. I am hoping CSULB will see that, too. I think with MSW programs, it is more about experience and how much you're going to contribute to their program based on that experience or interests rather than your gpa. I was accepted into USC with only a 3.2! I was shocked but ecstatic nonetheless. I think my experience may have helped me out on that one.

  12. For the resume portion of the application, did you guys include the hours put into each job? My friend told me I should have done that but I didn't. I don't think that's necessary. And how are your experiences? I'm curious as to how much experience they want us to have...

  13. I submitted mine Jan 23, late I know lol and I just received an email saying my application is missing a transcript :/ uh oh. Now it's gonna take two weeks just to get my transcript copied by enrollment services.

You are ahead of the game tiennthai :) hope u hear from them soon! Did u get your confirmation email that they received your app?

I know... the process is so slow. Everything they receive takes weeks to process. Some of my friends who have applied to LB's MSW have been emailed a "pending" status. I have gotten a confirmation email already about my app being received and I continue to check my status on a daily basis but no luck.
