If you're going into public sector consulting Harris actually seems like a good choice, and I wouldn't let the location bother you. -

Comparing Schools (MPP/MPA/Ph.D)
xnormajeanx replied to orangedonkey's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Hi Stephen33, I'm also Canadian, but I've lived in the US for a long time now. I would like to eventually return to Canada and work for the federal govt. For IR, I've seen a ranking from a Canadian point of view that puts Georgetown high up there (#2 I think) -- but this is for their MA in IR, not MPP. I'm actually a bit unsure of whether I want to concentrate in IR (in which case I would focus on international trade) or domestic labor/economic policy. Do you think in Canada people know about Georgetown vs Berkeley vs. Chicago? -
Comparing Schools (MPP/MPA/Ph.D)
xnormajeanx replied to orangedonkey's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Most of us know where we're choosing between at this point. I thought it would be useful to make a big chart with the strengths and weaknesses of each of the schools I got accepted to, to compare them and also consider price differentials. Everyone should join in and add their own schools! (Price differentials will be different for everyone of course) ----------------------------------- Georgetown GPPI -------------------Chicago Harris ----------------- Berkeley GSPP Price differential (for me)-----------Baseline ------------------- +$15,000 over two years --------- +$29,000 over two years US News Rank -------------------------- #10 ---------------------------------- #7 -------------------------------- #1 Program strength ---------------------Foreign policy? ---------------- Social policy? ---------------Generalist/Economic policy? Graduate placement ---------------Mostly federal govt? ------------------- ??? --------------------- Mostly Cali/Bay area govt? How quantitative?------------------- Medium ------------------------------- High------------------------------ High Faculty quality-------------------------???--------------------------------------??? ----------------------------------??? Size ---------------------------------- Large (125+) ------------------------ Large (120+)-------------------- Small (65+) Male: female ratio------------------ 52% women ------------------------- 58% women-------------------- 64% women Cost of living -------------------------- High------------------------------- Low-Mid ----------------------------- High Name recognition (US) ----------------- ??? ---------------------------------- ???-----------------------------------??? Name recognition (abroad) -------------??? ---------------------------------- ??? -------------------------------- ??? So... please add what you know, including correcting inaccuracies! Include other schools for yourself! What other qualities are important that I missed? -
For MPP your Quantitative score is going to be more important most of the time. I would try to get that score up. You have a good background and have a good chance of getting into top 10 schools, but you would have an even better shot with a higher Quant score.

Why the bloody hell was I rejected from this school?

It's probably because you had a really bad attitude! -
Post here to whine about rejections

I just got rejected from Princeton WWS. I knew it was a long shot and everything, but I still had a teeny bit of hope. Sigh Since they notify so late, it really puts a damper on my enthusiasm for my acceptances. -

all right, I got rejected from WWS. Expected, but still really really disappointing. -

Yep... I just hope they send out ALL their decisions (rejections too) today so I can get all the waiting over with. -
Chicago's admissions dean says they admitted about HALF of applicants last year. that's not very selective. she also said most other programs besides WWS admit about that number, and that other admissions offices are inclined to tell you otherwise.

i didn't apply to sipa or anything, i just thought they would be picky because there seemed to be a lot of rejects on the results page. also, columbia is picky for pretty much everything else. they think they've got the best name ever.

i don't know about GSPP... i'm definitely turning them down. no money!

A lot of people have posted acceptances to WWS. I feel like that means we are rejected. I know we don't know for "sure" but ... -

I just got into UChicago! 17K Dean's scholarship. -
What do you guys think? What are the most selective programs? WWS seems most most selective, followed by KSG. Then what? SIPA? How do Harris, GSPP, LBJ, GPPI, Ford, GW, Brown, Wagner etc. rank?

two acceptances on the 'results search' page. always a possibility of being fake i guess... but i somehow trust it. -

looks like princeton is sending out decisions right now. i think im going to puke. really. i have so much anxiety. i have a like a fraction of a percent shot at getting in, but still. -
Someone, anyone, please call me paranoid.
xnormajeanx replied to stylefaxee's topic in Waiting it Out
yeah I agree... that question seems really normal. people don't usually identify themselves if they're asking such a casual question... one that requires a two word answer. don't worry! congrats on northwestern! -
harris teeter is really expensive! i hate it! shop at a different grocery store (food lion? walmart?), suffer a little more indignity, and you can cut down your grocery expenses by like 1/3!
-
heh that's what happens when the government owns the beer store.

i wish i had your enthusiasm!

they're mailing out decisions by post so you'll likely hear something soon. i shared my stats on this thread earlier, but briefly: 3.8 GPA from top 15 private school, 790V/800Q/4.5 W. -

Yay I just got into GSPP! Sadly, no funding. They were lower on my list than Georgetown so I doubt I will go. Still... acceptances always feel good. -
Yes I got a letter (first an email) -- no phone call. That's a bit odd. You'll probably get something in the mail soon...
