  1. I did not realize it was funded! If it's funded and you don't have a better option on the table, ABSOLUTELY TAKE IT (IMHO, anyway). Even if you don't want to go there later, it gives you some time to do more writing and research in the field without having to worry about working a full-time job on top of it. I mean... unless you have an industry specific full-time job. Then it's worth investigating which is better for your CV.

  2.

I'm pretty sure CA Emissions tests are fairly stringent. That said, provided there's nothing majorly wrong with your exhaust system you'll most likely pass the smog check.

Housing prices sucks in LA. Traffic sucks in LA. Gas won't stay cheap.

well, a couple years ago my muffler fell off mid drive. just fell off. it was replaced, but it looked like the problem had been caused by all kinds of rust and crap in the undercarriage. I just don't trust the quality of the vehicle TBH.

and I'm prepared for sucky housing prices and traffic. I live in NYC.

luckily childcare is not currently an issue for us.

  3. Make sure you know your OWN research inside and out. In all the conversations I've had with POIs, they are never as interested in what I had to say about their work as I'd prepped for. They want to get to know you. Be prepared to talk about fit with the program.

1000% agree with and cosign this advice. when my prof interviewed me we barely talked about his work except in relation to how it fit with my work. It helps to know the keywords they're using, obvs, but I'd be more concerned with how their work relates to yours.

  4.

Are you thinking of selling one of the two cars before moving? Or are you asking about buying a car once you're here? Because waiting to know about your schedules and expected commutes would help you make the decision whether or not to buy a car. If I were to guess, however, I think one car is enough for two people, as long as one of those people can make their commute without one. :)

Kind of both...? Right now we live in NYC. When we moved into NYC, I left my 2002 Jeep Liberty with my dad in Michigan and my partner brought his Jetta with us. We will definitely bring the Jetta to LA because he is in film and TV industry and will need it. I was thinking about bringing the Jeep but worried it is too beat up to make the drive, much less pass a CA emissions test (how tough are they? does my partner need to worry about the Jetta?) I'm thinking it'll probably be better to have my dad sell the Jeep to help pay for the move, especially so that we don't need to drive two cars down there.

That said, if my partner ends up working the long hours of an on-set PA (6 days a week, 12+ hrs/day and entirely possible) I feel like I might want it...

That said, I'm not sure if we're driving or having the cars hauled... I don't know how expensive that is. Never moved this far before!

  5. For Boulder and Albuquerque, I have to reapply.

For UCSB's Religious Studies program (the only non-comm program), I do not have to reapply because it is a combined MA/PhD program.

It is also my dream beyond dream program, but I am still waiting to hear specifics about funding (besides what they've told me, which is that they've nominated me for the central fellowship, but won't know an answer for another month or so).

It's also sadly the least likely to work out, because I have a family requiring at least a 3-bedroom home ... and that costs a pretty pretty shiny penny on the coast of California ... Much prettier a penny than we are even close to having. We're working on it though... partner's looking for jobs already and I'm praying to the gods of graduate funding that they hook me up with a sweet package.

    We'll see... :)

Good luck with the partner's job search and the funding package. That is the main thing affecting our decision right now too and it is scary (esp. since my partner is more of a freelancer and will be starting in a new community). I hope everything works out for you!

  6. Congrats to all of you USC admits!

Since I am a first time applicant it would be really helpful if you can share what in your opinion were the factors that played an important role in your admission.

Like how did you approach the admission process.

    Thanks  :)

I would underscore some of what Pedanticistt said.

    1. Extremely good fit with one of the profs. Such a strong fit that the Prof remarked on it too. I kind of feel like I'm mini!Prof. This is also the main reason I applied to the school and my proposed dissertation project involves looking at one of his earlier texts (foundational to the field) and examining how it can be brought current to modern technology and practices. I also think there are not a whole lot of other big profs studying this esoteric sub-field (fandom studies), so that makes the fit even more unique.

    2. Prof remarked on how strong my writing sample was. He said that almost no one is really doing research at that particular intersection (fandom and race, specifically cross-racial cosplay) and that one of the big journals in the field had been looking for material of this sort and not finding it.

    3. Prof also mentioned that an MA in Performance Studies from NYU was "no small thing." or something to that effect.

    4. My biggest weakness was a low undergrad grade point average and Prof asked how he might defend that in the room. I explained that three big factors contributed to it. One, I went through some depression in undergrad and that had an adverse effect on some grades. Two, I struggled with some classes (inducing languages) that were outside of my major and later eliminated from the school curriculum (i.e. if I had been class of 2010 and not class of 2009, my transcript would have looked very different). I also explained how I would tackle the language issue differently in grad school. Three, I said honestly that in undergrad I had an attitude that was shaped by people telling me those were supposed to be the best years of my life, so I was determined to enjoy them. Prof really resonated with that and said he had a similar undergrad experience.

So TL:DR -- Strong fit and writing sample (with good research area) got me the interview. Interview gave me a chance to confirm awesome fit and defend weaknesses.

    Thanks, roguesenna! And congratulations

    Thanks!

  7. So hey, just got accepted to USC Annenberg and I'd like to revive this thread.

Anybody have dirt on the Annenberg Grad and/or Family Housing and what it's like? What's better that or living off-campus? Can a couple survive with one car or do we need 2?

  8. WHEW. A response AT LONG LAST:

Got into USC. Five years of funding, Annenberg Fellowship.

It was someone here on GC who convinced me to go ahead and submit an app, even though I didn't think I was ready for that early deadline.

Congrats! Looks like we are going to be classmates!

EDIT: Just saw yours pedantacist and anothergradapplicant! Hope we all get to study together. :)

  9. hey everyone, mostly a lurker here but getting too stressed not to jump in. I come from a fine art background so my PhD quest has been rather loopy and non-linear... I only applied to two programs (largely cuz I'm looking to move back to NYC to be with family!) and one is NYU's Media, Culture & Communication - I see it so rarely in people's sigs, anyone else going out for that one? Anyone know if they interview? Results survey suggests I should hold my horses til mid-Feb, but, what can I say.......

I'm applying to NYU Steinhardt's MCC program (currently attending NYU Tisch for Perf Studies). My sig needs to be updated as that and USC are the only ones I've applied to. Which, side note, I haven't heard from yet in case people were curious. I have no idea if they interview. I didn't interview for Tisch, but I don't know that that's universal... and I'd also not worry about the responses yet cause our term just started today. So I don't even think any of the Ad Comms in any departments have even really had a chance to meet.

Ugh ok I can't take the constant email checking. Time for a distraction!

What is your favorite in-field book?

What is your favorite pleasure reading book?

What's your current favorite TV show (if you watch TV)?

    Woo!

Well my in-field bibliography needs work, but my bible right now is Henry Jenkins Textual Poachers, specifically the anniversary edition.

Favorite pleasure reading book of all time is probably Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lionness Quartet. It's a YA Fantasy novel about a young woman who runs away to learn to be a knight.

Favorite TV Show? Hm... I can't really pick a favorite, but currently I'm fascinated by Master Chef Junior.

  10. Hi Roguesenna,

Can you tell us how your usc interview went today?

How'd your interview go? I'm going to accept your interpretation so I can stop freaking out, since all the professors I wrote about know me to various degrees. =X

Sorry I didn't come on earlier, I got busy all of a sudden after the interview.

Basically POI and I discussed some of the things I touched on in my SOP like how I got interested in the field, etc. Then we discussed research interests and my writing sample. He asked me about the major weakness in my application and how he might defend it "in the room" so-to-speak. Then I had an opportunity to ask him some questions. I felt like it went pretty well and it was very much about us getting to know each other, and sort of confirming that he would be my advisor if I was accepted. I've never had the opportunity to meet a prof at a conference though I imagine it might have been similar to that, kind of gaging personality and interests. He also said (!) that I would know within ten days. Though he wasn't specific if that was ten real days or ten business days and I wouldn't be surprised if there were delays, but he did say that.

  11. Congrats!

     Thanks!

Thanks for the update @_@ I wonder if they mean not everyone who's being considered will get an interview. Because, I mean, not every single applicant getting an interview is a given, right?

Perhaps it has to do with whether you mentioned a specific professor or not? I know my invitation to interview came from someone I talked about in my SOP as a person I was specifically applying to study with and my dissertation project idea revolved around his prior research, so maybe they thought it would be a good idea to see if the two of us are even compatible before taking my app further? that's the only insight I can offer.

[Edit to Add:] Interview is tomorrow at 10am PDT/1pm EST.  I'll update after if people are interested...

  12. Has anyone heard anything from USC Annenberg? Considering their crazy-early deadline I was hoping they'd have equally early notifications, but that looks like it's not the way things are going...

Hey, I just checked this thread for the first time this season (was too busy to be on GC during the app season, sadly).

I just got emailed on Friday for an interview with my POI which is tentatively scheduled for this Thursday. I'm not the same as the person who already reported to the results as mentioned earlier in the thread. (I'm about to go do that now).

  13. Hi,

I'm popping into this thread toward the end of the application season as I scramble to get my apps together and do my finals and move. (AH!)

Autumn I'm also into Fandom and Participatory Culture as well as social media and new media technology. If you don't mind sharing (and I understand if you do) I'd love to see that initial list of 12-15 programs. I narrowed mine down to 5 (including two Performance Studies programs) and had a hard time identifying other programs that I thought could fit well with a fandom oriented project. My top choice is definitely USC Annenberg because of Dr. Henry Jenkins, but I'd love to see what someone else thinks about various programs. I'm a bit limited geographically, but I'm still not 1000% sure what's out there.

I'm also curious as to what other fan/audience studies people's backgrounds look like. From the research I've done so far it seems like the field is still really young, but I only discovered it within the last year or two and have only started hardcore researching it within the last year. I'm worried I won't have enough relevant experience, published/presented articles, etc. What do you think?

  14. I'm actually from Vancouver - I just moonlight as an Eastern Canadian :P And yes, we are all winter and we should get double-doubles and build our own quinzee to drink that beer in!

Oh, then our hockey team *definitely* wins. Actually, I kind of feel bad for you guys. I live in NYC right now and my BF is a Rangers fan and I'd just like to say we apologize for Tortorella. If you aren't a hoceky fan (are you sure you're Canadian?) then just ignore me. :P

Canada is totally south of Michigan, Detroit is the one place in the lower 48 where you can drive south into Canada.

Yep. I have been to Point Peely (sp?) it is full of biting black flies. No fun. But the rest of Ontario is very nice.

  15. Oh my goodness, Gnome, that example reminded me of how, at a recent conference, I went to breakfast by myself and it was just what I needed.  Like you said, I love talking to all of the wonderful people who were attending, and I thoroughly enjoyed and was so thankful for our discussions about research and findings, but by Saturday, I had to just go off by myself and have a quiet meal.

Roguesenna, it really just goes to show that grades don't necessarily speak to true ability, nor do gifted programs (especially since gifted programs aren't in all schools, if I'm not mistaken?).

That DOESN'T mean that folks in gifted programs are not intelligent!!!  I'm just saying that not all folks with high intellectual abilities are in gifted programs that really cultivate that intellect...if that makes any sense.  It's been a long day!

I worked with someone who reminds me of you and your theatre example, so I totally understand!!

I totally agree! I mean we have to take into account the fact that gifted programs are designed by humans who may or may not be gifted, so they're inherently fallible. Nor are they standardized, so you're right, every single one is different! I was in a lot of different gifted programs, one in elementary school called "GTC" (Gifted, Talented and Creative), in middle school I did "Saturday School" at the local community college, between high school and college I did "MTC at MSU" (Math, Science and Technology at Michigan State University), I was invited to take college math in high school (which I quit because it was so difficult I was constantly breaking into tears) and I took honors and AP courses before eventually participating in a summer High Energy Physics Lab program at MSU (I got to make and test parts for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It was AWESOME!) But yeah, my grades were crap until I realized I needed to get into college. Then I started shaping up. I mean age-old story: Einstein had shitty grades.

So yeah, gifted programs have little to do with whether or not you're actually "gifted" and a lot more to do with exposure and opportunity. Plus, as you can probably tell from my story, once you're labeled as "gifted" you get invited to a lot more gifted/accelerated programs.
