  1. yeah, the "by march" is all I have to go on except results posts from previous years. mostly in the past they have been within Feb 26th - Mar 2nd. I'm thinking waiting til Friday and emailing them then.

  2. bees

Unfortunately, the cat consumed all glory of the moon and stars. It gave him severe anxiety, but also he received the power to fly. A joy. Suddenly...Bees! They flew around, jealous, plotting murder, arson, etc. They were searching for hundreds of floating wildebeest. These evil bees converged into a mega bee! Zooming fiercely throughout the glen until they could find unsuspecting marsupials, the bees settled on a caribou. Meanwhile, the cat soared through the aether, gathering bundles of tiny flowers for the wildebeests' protection. The flowers glowed bright as they bled starlight. This magic was transcendental and powerful. The cat rushed to smash the evil bees

  3. School says phd applicants will be notified of decisions "by March." Haven't heard a word from them throughout the process. I know my app is complete because I've checked website many times.

Email them to inquire about timeline? Or wait?

  4. don't you find empty theatres kinda scary?

... you're not a theatre person, are you?

sorry, but absolutely not. Or maybe I find them the tiniest bit frightening in that there's so much potential in an empty theatre that the idea of filling up that space can be daunting. But honestly, for me, being in an empty theatre is like no other feeling in the world. It's both insanely calm and bizzarely exciting at the same time. Especially right after a production has ended, it's as if I can feel the energy of everyone that was in the room before. Old theatres are even better.

  5. I had quarters in grad school and my MFA. the last time I had semesters was in high school and i can't possibly fathom why someone would prefer them. Obviously, I'm a little biased, but I loved the fast pace of quarters for all the reasons listed above. More variety of classes, they're over faster if you don't like them for whatever reason, etc. I also think that the quarter system really forces students (and profs I would guess) to produce material quickly, reliably and on a deadline. It took me a long time to learn that school and it's truly invaluable to have.

As far as TA advice, I'd say if you are designing assignments, make them manageable time-wise. Both for students to complete and for you to grade. Grade as quickly as possible, because other posters are right, not getting any feedback til half-way through the quarter sucks. I also think correspondance between students and TAs or Profs before the quarter starts can be really helpful. Order books early, like someone else said. Don't waste the first and last classes on typical first day/last day stuff. If your class meets twice a week, you only have 20 sessions. Make em count!

  6. I oscillate between INFJ and INTJ. Got INFJ this time.

I'll be one of the falsifiers of the "if introverted, then in gifted program" hypothesis.  I never qualified for gifted programs in elementary and middle school (A/B student. I never had straight A's until college!) and I dropped out of high school, so I definitely never qualified for any gifted program there.

As for your second point, you can definitely be social and good at public speaking/teaching and still be introverted.  Introversion involves an individual drawing energy from themselves instead of others (for example, a social, outgoing person who feels great wearing what they're wearing because they, themselves, like it).

I was in the gifted programs and I had terrible grades actually. Throughout school I didn't see the point of homework -- it seemed like mindless busy work with no purpose, I already understood the concepts and had not yet grasped the concept that it was worth practicing them anyway -- and I had better things to do, so I simply didn't do my homework. But when the test came around, I always aced it. Thus I was in the gifted programs. Like someone said earlier gifted programs are so inconsistent with what they require and what they offer, there's no good reason to use that as data.

And chiming in as a social introvert. Love theatre, love performing, love being out with my friends, but it has to be close friends and my favorite moment in that theatre is after everyone is gone and I get a second to stand in that empty theatre and reflect on the experience.

  7. Don't know anything about Seattle, but I'd assume A2 would be cheaper by comparison just because it's a smaller city in a less affluent state. Michigan is beautiful for camping, hiking, any kind of outdoor activity and has great seasonal stuff. If you are finding yourself bored that close to Detroit, you're not trying hard enough. If you get sick of A2, there are tons of music and sports things to do in Detroit and it honestly isn't as bad as the rep it gets.If you're at all into sports or music, you should have tons of activities so long as you're willing to look for them.

  8. Haha yes, yes it is. I sent them an angry email back telling them they didn't read my compliant correctly. The whole test is BS anyways.

blergh. stupid corporations taking advantage of students who barely have any money. makes me wanna Hulk out.

I also love vibrator play! So good!

I really want to go see Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in Waiting for Godot, but I have no money and no time to stand in line for rush tickets! :( I wish I'd gotten to see Zach Quinto in the Glass Menagerie before it ended, but I think it closed now. Also on my list are Pippin (I'm a circus person so, YESPLS) and I think Chris O'Dowd and Jame Franco are going to be UH-mazeballs in Of Mice and Men, so that's on my list if I ever get any freakin money.

Also, do you all know about ScriptFrenzy? I always want to do it and there's never anyone to do it with me. We could al ldo it together. It's like NanoWriMo, but for scripts (screenplays, plays, etc) and it's in April.

Buttz. just went to look it up and it seems like they ended it in 2012. Now they just lump it in with NaNoWriMo which is in November, which is a HORRIBLE time to be writing if you're doing grad apps. Oh well.

  9. 1. great student - professor ratio (sounds like something for undergrads, but there are only 3-4 students per year so I will be able to have a close relationship with any professor in the department)

    2. world-renowned well-recognized ivy-league school

    3. above-average program

    4. inter-disciplinary program that will allow me to teach in multiple subject areas post-graduation

    5. fully-funded

    6. great higher-ed job placement

    7. less than five subway stops away from my current apartment

    8. historical school

    9. tons of well-connected alumni

    10. Did I mention I would get to put that world-renowned ivy-league name on my resume?

    11. it's in NYC, where better to go to learn about theatre?

now if I can get in...

  10. Hey there! I have applied to University of Michigan for fall term back in september ( the deadline was oct 1st) and havent heard a word since. I emailed them in january and was told that a decision would be made in 45 days. Still nothing. Does anyone have words of wisdom to share? Cause I'm about to flip.

45 days, or 45 business days? there's a big difference.

  11. as

  12. I would always go for the slightly less powerful ally who is completely dedicated to helping you than the more powerful ally who treats you as something of an afterthought. Also, as someone who had a department chair on their thesis committee, it sucks. they don't have nearly as much time to dedicate to you and your needs because they're busy worrying about EVERYONE and EVERYTHING in the department.

  13. Hmm, if we aren't trying to correlate our RL fields to our magical ones, I suspect I'd be good at Charms, too. A little DADA wouldn't hurt, but I'd thrive in Hufflepuff :D

Definitely potions mastery would be my goal. I'd also want to get NEWTs in Charms, Transfig, CoMC, Herbology (lets face it, Herb & CoMC would probably be required for Potions mastery) and DADA would just make sense as a skill to have. I'd also try to find someone to tutor me in Occlumency/Legillimency.

Also, Hogwarts would be my top choice, but I'd apply to the Salem Witches Institute as a backup.

    Oh, And:

Email asking me to check website. Foolish mortals.
