  1. Yeah, it seems like things have been pretty quiet. I'm leaving for Sri Lanka in under 24 hours and I'd love to hear something before then...
  2. I just got back from three internet-less days in Egypt. I had nearly a hundred unread emails awaiting me upon my return. Not a single one was from a school Arghhhhhh.
  3. A round trip would be about 1000 for me too...but if they subsidized even 500, that might make it worth it.
  4. I would like to know this too...
  5. I know that some schools call if you're accepted, but if they try to call and you don't answer, will they email? I ask just because I'll be away for most of this month (Egypt and Sri Lanka, yay! Nothing like a vacation to take my mind off applications, hopefully!) and my phone won't be working in those countries...so it would be super nice to get email notification too. Not that I'm expecting too many acceptances...one would be awesome, basically Also, congrats to everyone who got good news today!
  6. -Graduated from a private research university with an excellent PhD placement record -Worked as a research assistant in college -Good GPA and GREs -Have won several very competitive research fellowships, and consequently have independent research experience abroad in two countries -Speak two languages fluently, one semi-fluently (but fluently in the next 6 months or so), and three at the beginning/intermediate level -I think my recommenders wrote good things We'll see how things go! I'm super nervous about getting in anywhere!
  7. I have a research fellowship abroad that is political science-related, so I suppose that counts as preparation. But otherwise, nope Until I actually get an acceptance, it doesn't seem real enough to warrant actual preparation.
  8. Which schools email about applications being complete? I've checked a couple of the status checkers and everything's complete, but not for every school, and I haven't gotten emails specifically saying that my application is complete. It should be, though, given that at a few schools it is and everything was submitted properly.
  9. If I don't get in anywhere, I guess I'll be going to law school after all, which is a really unappealing option for me at the moment. Or, I might be completely irresponsible and just travel around the world. Hmm.
  10. haha. yes. it might have been a bad idea, but i think i have a fairly strong application...and i have a deferred admission to a top 10 law school to fall back on if nothing pans out
  11. I'm applying to the schools listed in my signature...I'm really hoping to get into one! I would be super excited to attend any of them. Good luck to everyone!
  12. Thanks for the responses! I'm interested in immigration/migration, ethnicity, and human rights issues. My current Fulbright research is related to international migration. I'd like schools that are strong in Middle East Studies, but that also have at least some offerings in Southeast Asian Studies. Several of the California public schools have excellent SE Asian Studies programs - would you guys avoid them because of the budget problems or apply anyway? Also, how many schools do most people apply to? I'd like to not spend a fortune on application fees.

  15. -Attended top 10 university ('09 graduate) -Bachelor's, with honors, in history - wrote a bachelor's honors thesis on the political history of Southeast Asia -GPA was 3.7 -GRE: 720 Q / 640 V (I didn't study for it and completed the entire thing in under two hours, so I'm fairly sure I could retake and get a higher score if that would really help my applications - any advice on this would be great!) -Current Fulbright research fellow in the Middle East -Languages: French (fluent), Hebrew (advanced), Arabic (beginning), Khmer (beginning) I would love any advice you guys can offer! I applied to law school during my senior year of college and deferred my acceptance to a top 10 program, but I'm reconsidering now and looking at PhD programs in political science. I would appreciate guidance on what range of schools I should be applying to, whether I should retake the GRE, etc. Thank you, Michal
