  1. Yeah, I haven't heard anything and I have had a good contact with their admissions office and several faculty members throughout the process. My guess is that they haven't sent anything out yet. Next week, I would expect them to send things out.
  2. Backsstreets, You can attempt to negotiate. My advisor told me to do this depending on if I am accepted at multiple schools I am serious about.
  3. I claim a Princeton rejection as well. Oh well, better things will come my way! Congrats to all of the acceptances :-D
  4. I don't know if this is true. Many traditionally male departments are offering more and more tenure-track jobs to females. According to one of my advisors (a prof who is female and just got tenure), they are actively recruiting women at my university and many others, despite the econ downturn. IDK. I guess we'll see in years. I think there are still many opportunities for my line of work with think tanks, so I am not all that concerned.
  5. I have to disagree with you, as a student who lives on campus currently. I am going to grad school at one of about 9 places next year (possibly) so no clue yet, but I think I will be getting a car. Yesterday, to go to a much-needed neuro consult, I had to walk about 3 miles, even WITH the bus taking about 1 mile off my trek. In the winter, people in this part of the state refuse to shovel, so walking becomes icy and dangerous. The buses are not necessarily reliable. I have waited 3 hours for a bus when ill before to return to campus. It definitely depends on where you live, but if you need to take a 9 anywhere, don't depend on it. They virtually do not run on Sundays and very rarely on Saturdays.
  6. If I go with first acceptance, technically "down", but I don't consider it a downshift. It is a much smaller department that is totally underrated - even my profs here say that!
  7. Left Coast, Okay. That makes sense. I was nominated for a fellowship. I'll no more with the official letter and the approval of the graduate school (the decide the amount) by March 1st. Maybe I will see you in the fall!
  8. Let Coast, I am the other Mizzou here. I got in yesterday. Did they mention which fellowship you were nominated for or just the stadard, it has to be approved by the graduate school but you will be a choice for full funding?
  9. NEPA, Congrats! I am hoping it won't be bad news for me
  10. Same here. I even had a Berkeley PhD tell me to be very, very careful. Excellent school, no doubt, but the last place I need to be when things are risky is 5 hours away from my "home" by plane and in one of the most expensive places to live in the world. Benefits are what would worry me more than a stipend cutback. I need my health care. I am not unhelathy when on my medications, but my asthma is sometimes a concern and unmedicated, I would be in a world of hurt. Also, ironically, I am doing HEALTH CARE research. The fact that I got money to go somewhere yesterday means that I can keep my health care through school starting. Amen!
  11. Bad news: Still rejected from Berkeley. Good news: A faculty member I am interested in working with read over my literature review and the outline for my thesis and liked it. I got some excellent feedback and I am hopeful!
  12. Rejection from Berkeley. Oh well, I am glad to hear the good news from yesterday and wish all of you who were accepted the best!
  13. Bobb Cobb, I really like Mizzou. Both of my cousins from St. Louis went there and loved it (they are both very intelligent). I am doing CP. I am pleased with the sort of talent there and I think it is either a 14k or 16k stipend. I will see when the official letter comes, I guess!

    Columbia, MO

So, I was recently accepted into the University of Missouri at Columbia and was wondering if anyone on here has any background information on it. I have family that lives in St. Louis and two of my cousins have been here (loved it), but that was 10 years ago, so I was wondering if you had any ideas about it?
  15. Thanks, yellowshoes! It makes me feel very relieved to have one in the hole!
  16. Claiming first acceptance to Missouri Columbia. Appears I have gotten full funding, but it has to be officially approved by the graduate school first. *takes a deep breath!* There will be more, I am sure, but I have one and at a school I very much like for what I am looking to do. I would be perfectly okay with it. Anyone know what funding looks like here?
  17. I have applied to a few programs off the beaten path. Many of them have an excellent record of setting students up with APPLIED research interest. If I couldn't get into a top academic program, I would have no qualms going to an applied program. But, ultimately, I didn't place all of my fish in one basket.
  18. Your PS has a lot in common with the organization of mine. Not going to lie. I will post mine after all the responses have come in, simply due to my worries about acceptances.
  19. Right now, I feel like we all have mental disorders. I have been dealing with killer migraines for two weeks. I am sure the stress from admission is not helping. I wish schools would get back to me. I see the neuro tomorrow. He is probably going to wonder why I am stressed. All I am doing is writing my thesis, tutoring, and taking basketball for one credit. Normally, I am taking 17 credits, volunteering 10 hours a week, working 20 hours a week, and still managing fine. I don't think it is all just stress, but I am not sure he will understand it at all.
  20. But life is what you make of it! Life hands you cards, it is what you DO with them that counts. Will I be upset if I don't get accepted? Hellz yeah. But some other door will open. Nothing is the end of the world.
  21. Backstreets, That is tough. Your stats are incredibly impressive and it must be really frustrating. However, you have gotten accepted to two very good programs. Chin up! Many of us have yet to be accepted to any program yet.
  22. I am applying to several. I just called and talked to one today. I did meet with one of my advisors at the department today. Didn't think to ask, though. We did talk about IU admissions and it seemed as though they may still be in process.
  23. I did not ask. I could call and ask my advisor. I think they notified over a large period of time last year.
  24. I feel better after talking to a member of one of the adcom's I have applied to. It's a joint program and he says that they are still deciding, but I am hopeful. He also gave me some insight into another part of the admissions process. He is from a big state school (that is all I will say) and says that often it is a balance of knowing how badly that applicant wants to go to big state school. If you are one of the strongest applicants, you may not get offered money simply because they will assume you will go Ivy and leave them. A tier 2 school would rather offer someone middle of the road often times because that person is likely to stay with them and not leave it until April 15th. Thus, they are often hesitant to pick the best applicant for fear they will defect and choose another school. He also told me I would not be living in a cardboard box come August and that he is confident I will do fine. Oye. I wish there would be some news. Edited for spelling.
