  1. No kidding! And if someone else in the dept found out? Wow. Well, if you guys roll up to Duke next year and see one of your fellow students driving a brand new BMV, then you may wonder if this is true. I just think that is a waste of funds.
  2. Congrats to them as well, but don't get so down on yourself. Don't stress until you have that letter (listen to me, I'm a wreck). Tomorrow I hope for good news! I applied to the WWS at Princeton, so I have awhile. Anyone hear anything about University of Washington? They say they are mailing decisions, but I don't know when I will get them. It seems odd because they emailed them last year I believe.
  3. I read a lot of papers over the past two years doing thesis research. I marked where I was hearing good stuff from. I looked at where they got PhD's. Then I looked at where they are. That established a few contacts (GWU, Berkeley, Nebraska, Princeton, WashU, UMSL). I have a really mixed variety of schools, but I have my reasons for every one of them. The schools I have had the least in common with are the ones that rejected me. This is what I was told to do. My advisor is an emeritus here (IU) and has been incredibly helpful. He has given me his pick for the future and why (I won't list it for obvious reason). My other reader for my thesis has a colleague at another university that was interested in what I was doing, too. I am just really hoping that ONE accepts me. I have EXCELLENT LOR's, my GRE could be better, and my GPA is almost a 4.0, so that helps. I have extensive abroad experience and conference experience, too. Which also is to my benefit. I just hope one takes me!
  4. Who would pay a grad student $80,000 when they know we will work for peanuts. Honestly, I would just love to get into ANYWHERE right now. Even if they ivies don't become a reality, the safeties will be okay. I just want to hear SOMETHING! And thanks for the g-mail tip. I check... nothing
  5. Lexington and Concord.
  6. I do not believe that IU has notified. I am here. Could call the office tomorrow if need be? I applied for the joint degree with SPEA, so I don't know when they notify for that. IDK. If you are here, speak up! I want to hear if they have sent you funding yet!
  7. Poly, I was also told this by my emirtus advisor. I did apply to GWU, bt no full well that I have to be prepared that a job in think tanks/government may be what I get out of it.
  8. I would hope not because I was told by the admissions office last week that they had not made a decision yet.
  9. Just going to add a plug for London (not attending, can't afford a Master's at LSE which was the only place I wanted to go). London is one of the coolest cities in the world. Everything is there. If you can't find it there, it doesn't exist. Bristol is a good school, don't get me wrong. I have several friends who got their BS there, but I really liked UCL, LSE, etc. It was great to be able to have multiple libraries, various connections to other parts of the country via rail, and be able to go to lectures. I lived in Kent, but was there pretty much every weekend either meeting friends or working on research. Gotta plug London as I miss it so very much!
  10. Stanford (rejected), WashU (rejected), Princeton, GWU, IUSPEA (did my undergrad in poli sci at IU), Nebraska, Missouri, University Missouri St. Louis, Kent State, University of Washington, Berkeley, Harvard. Wide variety here, lol. I've done both public policy stuff and comparative politics. My current work is a mixture of both.
  11. The admissions person at Berkeley said that cohort size would still be 20-25 this year, so maybe that is down from 30-35 they had last year?
  12. Yup. It looks that way. That is why when someone on here said by the end of THIS week, I freaked. I was like, "They've barely admitted anyone!" LOL. I would like to hear, even if it is bad news.
  13. Emailed Berkeley, they accept about 25 PhD students a year (the results are less than 10 I think) and I don't know - has anyone in comparatives heard yet or in public policy? Those are the two I indicated (I do health care policy and comparative political analysis of health insurance). They say they will notify by the end of NEXT week.
  14. Berkeley allegedly said they would notify by today right? I haven't heard anything and my application on the web just says that no decisions have been made (dated Feb 4th). If they will notify today when will we know? I know that they have a pretty large cohort in comparison to many of the other schools I have applied to, so I am confused.
  15. Anyone think more Berkeley acceptances will be coming? Anyone in comparatives/public policy get anything back yet? Also, anyone here apply to Princeton's joint degree in politics and social policy? Heard anything. All I see are rejections. Is this good/bad?
  16. I did okay on my first GRE test, but not great and my advisor is saying that I should be able to do 100 points better if I really, really give it a go. I am studying very good. I have the swine flu a week before my test (couldn't study or sleep) and had no computer, so I was constantly distracted and running around to labs to write papers for classes. Oh yeah, and that meant I couldn't study at all for it with Higher Score or Power Prep. I know I can do better - especially now that I know the exam format. Anyhow, I have contacted a couple of early application schools. Harvard told me not rush and that they will accept as late as Jan 8. UC Berkeley wants them on the 2nd, but they can be unofficial. I don't know about Princeton or Stanford yet, but I will assume the same. How do I get them my unofficial scores before the officials come back? Is there a way to do this? Thanks!
