  1. Yeah, but don't many PhD programs include an MA along the way (so the 2 first years are supposed to be master equivalent)? I know not all courses transfer but I wanted to know on average how many do. I assume that a person with a BA enters a PhD program on the first year but what about someone with an MA? They should be ahead just a little?!
  2. Hello, all Could anyone offer their experiences or knowledge as to how many classes or semesters got transferred for you when you went into a PhD program with an MA from another school? Did you lose a year? Please post your schedules if you can (1st year, 2nd year etc..what were you doing? taking classes or research etc? Basically I would like to find out, for most students how many years did it take to complete a PhD after MA and how many of those years were dedicated to coursework. All fields, please provide an input. If you are in the humanities that is even better ! Much appreciated!
  3. I don't know..I am still waiting after the interview...French MA. Wish they could just say yes or no!
  4. I received a very generous offer from FSu and loved my visit there. But wanted to ask more about the town and jobs in general. If I go there I will be moving with family. How is the job market there? Especially in the food related industry? Where are the best neighborhoods for apartments? What do natives think about the town overall? I come from a big city so the small town feel was definitely something different!
  5. been accepted, haven't accepted yet though/ What do you all think of the city? I visited there but compared to where I come from now it is relatively small
  6. Yes I actually used the 6 practice tests, took a class similar to kaplan or one of those other prep courses and my score did improve by almost 10 points but it is still only 153. If anybody else has any opinions about this let me know! I am going to an MA now and have already been accepted to a few programs but just looking ahead for the PhD future I would like to know if it would be really advisable for me to take it 3 rd time. I am looking to get a PhD in French or comparative Lit for the PhD
  7. Hello all! So I will ask the ultimate question here..should one retake the GRE? I took it twice and decided to apply with a V-153, Writing-4.0 I have already been accepted to several MA programs, but my question is more geared towards the future... After I finish my MA I will be most likely applying to PhD programs in foreign language or Comp. Lit, so Does the GRE score really matter that much after an MA and significant research? Especially for the higher ranking programs? After taking it twice I can honestly say I am not that good at taking these standardized tests, so really trying to avoid it again:)
  8. so far got accepted to 2 programs funded..waiting on more...
  9. Hello, all So I am in the process of applying to MA in French and was wondering for an MA if with the following a have a pretty good chance of being accepted. Overall gpa low but major gpa around 3.6 GRE on lower side -Verbal 153.. Speak multiple languages (more than 3) ALso if anyone is also applying for MA's would love to hear back from you regarding the process..etc
  10. Hi, welcome! How are you planning to study for the verbal section of the new GRE? I am just a bit confused if we are still supposed to memorize vocabulary lists or not?
  11. I wonder if potential humanities/lit prospects like me should be contacting proffs. too or not?
  12. Well good luck and let me know how the process goes for you!
  13. Ah ok...me women studies, especially french, british, russian writers How many programs are you planning to apply to? I have 20 so far!
  14. Does anyone know on here if for the new GRE it is still essential to study vocab. or not. I found that in the old study guides they had word lists to study but in the new one there are just study guides of the types of exercises and no actual vocabulary to study...so what's the deal with this..can anybody fill me in? thanks
  15. Yes, Columbia definitely!...I was also thinking CUNY..up there as well. What is your specialization, research interests? By the way did you already take the GRE's?
  16. Hi! Yes, I have a long list all over the US...what are some of the schools you're interested in NY area?
  17. Hello, I am an applicant for 2012 and would like to hear from future other applicants..especially if you are applying in the field of Comp. Lit/Lit general. Also any applicants with kids out there?
  18. Since in the past Ive juggled with whether to choose a national lang PhD or Comp. Lit...(in the end it was Comp. Lit...for various reasons which I will mention later), I just wanted to take the time to do a short survey. If you chose Comp Lit, why do you think for you it's better than say a Phd in a language? Benefits/disadvantages? Thank you all!
  19. Love this thread! I have a now 4 year old while finishing my BA (and studying abroad with him now) It is all definitely possible! I had my kid while studying at a community college, and now in about a year after we get back from studying abroad I will be graduating while simultaneously applying to PhD programs! It is definitely very hard but also rewarding... Those people that have 2+ kids..WOW...I am amazed! That's a great accomplishment! i don't anticipate having another one until after my PhD ...but one never knows for sure!
  20. Thanks for the input. First of all just wanted to clarify some things. I go to a state school now so for the most part my professors are not that "well" known. I am applying to comp. lit but am a French major, so most reccs are from language profs. The first prof I mentioned is from the humanities dept where I took one course and got an A but also established a good rapport with him through my participation in the class and then later on when I asked him for several scholarship/study abroad reccs. The second one, as I mentioned taught 2 french lower division language classes and again, I had a good rapport with her also (the same way as with the first one). the only difference is with her I took two classes. So I guess what I'm wondering here if the only difference is the amount of classes I took and the major/non major factor...which one should I choose? Thanks...
  21. Hello All! As I am thinking who to choose for my letters of Recc for the next application cycle for Comp. Lit. I came across a bit of a dilemma. I have two very solid faculty members who I have established a good relationship with as well as got very good grades, but then at the same time I am still wondering about the 3rd one. The third one could be either a professor with whom I have only taken 1 class (and not in my major) or a lecturer in my major for 2 lower division french classes (language courses). Please provide your opinion which one do you think is more suitable. Also, since I've never done this before, I am also wondering if people who are applying to 10 or more schools all have the same 3 reccs for all applications? don't know if asking 1 prof. to submit 10 reccs is kinda a lot? I appreciate in advance all the answers!
  22. Thank you for quick reply!!! I definitely will check out those schools that you mentioned and some of them I already have- but if you know of any MA programs only that I could apply to also feel free to write them too. I pretty much have about 10 Phd programs that I would like to apply to now but I also want to have some MA back up options. I heard of darthmouth but if you know any other ones please advise because I am having a little hard time with finding one with my particular interests. Thank you...and anybody else feel free to add to this
  23. Hello, I will be applying for PhD programs Fall 2012- Comp. Lit and although I plan on applying to a variety of schools I also had not very good GPA in the first two years of my undergraduate life so my overall GPA upon graduating will be 3.0 or somewhere in that range. My major gpa is 3.8 in French. I do have the advantage of being fluent in 3 foreign languages and learning a 4th one now and I am hoping that my statement of purpose, GRE scores will help offset my not so good previous GPA. So I have two questions: 1. Do I have a chance to get into a good PhD program? 2.)I also want to apply to master's programs, if you can recommend some good ones in this field it would be great! Much appreciated!
  24. I am an undergrad, going on study abroad in the next year and then probably graduating in 2011. i would like to go to grad school after but have lately been exploring what in. I would love to do french but am not sure if i should do comp lit. Are there more employment opportunities in Comp. Lit? Since you can major/minor in 3 languages (I know 4 so that's not a problem!)the last thing I want to do is go through a Phd in French and then find that my competiton with native french speakers will be huge! please advise! FYI: my french level is good, not native but I am in advanced lit. classes now and I am sure it will improve even more soon! Why do people choose for. lang phd over comp.lit or the other way around? There is the possibility of me doing MA/Phd in France too to increase my marketability in the french department even more, so if anybody has any advice how to get funded for graduate study in France I would appreciate that too!\ A bientot!
  25. So, I am finishing up my ba and am wondering what to do next. My BA is in french I love the language. I will be interning at a high school to see if I like that environment, but I am also considering ma/phd programs. However, I am not fluent yet, I would say I am a high intermediate- advanced student. Do you think I would even have a chance at being hired at university level. I am sure I ll gain more fluency through the years but just am unsure if I should really consider that path at all! What do you think?
