    Eugene, OR

For more information on Housing in Eugene, check out these websites: www.stewardshipproperties.com http://asuorental.uoregon.edu. http://vonkleinrentals.com/ www.bell-realty.com www.eugenerentals.com www.principlepropertymanagement.net www.chinookproperties.net Now my question to all that can help me out is: I am an international student, and will be making my travels to the US of A in august... meeting up with a college friend from Minnesota and then moving to Eugene by late august (prolly the last week)... Would it be too late to be able to find a 2 bedroom apartment @ that time?
  2. Hey thanks for the response, that helped calm my nerves. I just have a few other questions: 1)What if the counselor officer asks me: "You just came back after your BS degree. You stayed in your home country for a year and now why are you going back again so soon?" 2)What if I am asked: "What will you do if your visa is refused?" 3)Is it a problem if I have a relative living in the US ? -thanks
  3. So I have been accepted for my doctorate program (CS) @ a reputed US University for fall 2010. The only thing left is the visa interview. I was wondering if anyone could provide me insights about the process. (F1 visa). I already have a B.S. degree from the USA, therefore had had the F1 visa stamp on my passport. After completion I had returned to my home country. Now I am trying to go back. Can this be a problem? I would like to know what are the things that I need to look out for and what could potentially lead to issues during the process? also how to avoid such issues. thanks.
  4. Thanks for the advice man.. I followed it up with a phone call and still got the same reply "no decision has been made... no tentative date". Next emailed the professor.. he has been very supportive and responsive thus far... within 10 mins of emailing him, he emailed back with a forward message from the admissions "no decision has been made, yet." haha...ouch, delaware.
  5. is wondering why he hasnt heard back from U of Del

  6. So I have been already accepted into the doctorate program of my 2nd preference school. But I still haven't heard from my first preference(U of Delaware). I wrote an email to the graduate admissions office on April 15th asking them if there was any update with my application status. I received a reply on April 18th, saying that: "Thank you for your application to our program. No decision has yet been made. You will be notified once a decision has been made. We thank you for your patience during the decision process." April is about to end and I am starting to feel a little uncomfortable. The results section on this forum shows that some people have heard back from Delaware (CS dept) - around the April 12th, 23rd & 26th. What should I do?
  7. Hey, I am still waiting to hear back from another school, but for now I am leaning towards Oregon (computer science).
  8. I have only heard one positive reply out of the 5 schools that I had applied to (still waiting on 2). Out of the remaining 2 schools, is the University that I would really like to go to. That being said, previously I wasn't aware of this written release form. So, just to safe guard myself I have already accepted the offer from my only acceptance. I wish I had read this thread earlier. For instance if I do hear back positively from my top priority, what do I do? (I am an international student, less familiar with the US schooling system, hence could I get less frowned upon for asking to back out? heh)
  9. have you already heard back from Delaware? I am still waiting. Personally I feel Del. has a really progressive computer science dept with relation to current novel concepts.
  10. Yes, I understand the concept of subjective preference in terms of research interest compatibility. But what I had meant to ask was reviews (if possible) about individual departments and respective faculty at the 3 mentioned computer science depts. But thanks anyways;)
  11. Thanks. I did already check there. I was just hoping to get some personal feedback. Just in case I believe that rankings always don't tell the correct picture... if you know what i mean.
  12. So I understand that it depends on the subjective individual to choose what best suits him/her. But I would like a generalized opinion on which Computer science dept is ranked higher out of the following schools: University at Buffalo - Suny University of Delaware University of Oregon I would greatly appreciate your opinions.
  13. Computer Networks: Swarm Intelligence and Sensor Networks.
  14. Hello, - I am an international student with a BS degree in computer networks and security from a US university. - I have applied for the PhD program for FALL 2010 semester at 5 different US universities. - I was wondering, if for example I don't meet the conditions to be accepted as a PhD student, do Universities automatically give me a chance to prove myself by deferring me to the MS program? or does my application get thrown into the ignore pile? - Please help. thanks
  15. I know that this topic has been hackneyed throughout the forum. But I will ask again. Please help. I have applied to 5 Universities for PhD in CS dept: Computer Networks (Sensor - Swarm Intelligence) + Grids. I am looking for suggestions for avg rank Universities with a good CS department. This will help me in my contingency plan. If I don't get accepted then I will work for 2 yrs and apply again. I am not looking for Ivy league Universities. (My GPA is only 3.13 and GRE is 760,560,4.0) - International Student with a bachelor degree in the US. Thank you.
  16. i am worried that my Undergraduate GPA is going to be the end of my hopes. haha My Gre - 760(Q) - 560(V). undergraduate GPA - 3.13 major.
  17. How is vocab (720) only a 75 percentile.
  18. Hello, I am an international student with a BS degree from a US University in Computer Networking. I am applying to grad schools for a ph.d in Computer Science - Networking/Security. GRE score - 1320 (Math 760, Verbal - 560, Writing - 4.0) Undergraduate GPA - 3.13 major. I am applying to: ------------------- University of Washington - Seattle. University of Oregon - Eugene. University of Idaho - Moscow. University of Delaware. University at Buffalo - NY. University of Rhode Is. Vanderbilt University - Tennessee. -------------------- Insights are appreciated? Any other Universities that I could look into with my score range? Thanks
  19. haha, that is a huge list. Don't apply to Florida schools - the funding situation is not so great out there. (So, I have heard from my professors) I have also heard negative stories about the availability of monetary assistance in Cali, but you should give it a shot. One of my friend is actually doing just fine at USBC. Other than that, try narrowing down what research you are actually interested in. That is what helped me in my case. Basically had to go to individual school websites and read publications. Btw I am from kolkata. Good luck
  20. not sure about aid in the masters level, especially with the current economic crisis. However your chances might improve after you are actually on the University campus. Maybe a T/A or something of that sort. However with your score you shouldn't have any problem with getting into a Master's program. Good job on the Verbal skills.
  21. Okay so I just took the GRE exam. My scores were alright. Total = 1320. Quantitative - 760. Qualitative - 560. My major GPA is also mediocre compared to many other people on this forum = 3.13. from St Cloud State University in Minnesota, USA. Major = Computer Networking and Security. Concentration - Wireless Networks, Adhoc Networks, Honeypots, Worms, etc. I am an international student and am looking to do my phd in the related field. Can anyone please give me some insights about what my chances are in getting admitted/accepted for grad school. I will be looking to get grants, since financing my own doctorate degree is not plausible. - Thank you.
  22. I forgot to mention that I would really like to get a GRANT ... hence I am a little concerned.
  23. Hello Everyone, I am an international student with a BS degree in Computer Networking from Saint Cloud State University, Minnesota - USA (with a 3.13 GPA in my major). I graduated in May 2009 and returned back to my country. However I have always had my mind set on getting a PHd. While as an undergrad I had registered for the GRE and taken it without any preparation. I managed to get a 700 in Math, 430 in Verbal (the exigencies of being a foreigner: my vocabulary was very weak at that point of time) and a 4.5 in the analytical writing section. I am planning to retake the GRE this October with a goal of getting somewhere around 750 in the math section and possibly a 500 in the Verbal. I am primarily looking at degrees in Wireless Network Security, Adhoc networkin, IDS/IPS, HoneyNet (but no or very less cryptography). I also have a few others in mind. At the current moment my choice of Universities include: (in order of preference w/research and my chances of getting accepted) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) U of Washington (seattle) 2) U of Oregon (eugene) 3) U of Idaho (moscow) 4) U of NY (sunny buffalo) 5) U of Iowa (ames) 6) U of Delaware (newark) 7) U of Rhode Is (kingston) 8] U of Michigan (ann arbor) 9) U of Wisconsin (madison) 10) U of Minnesota (twin cities) 11 12) U of Colorado (denver and boulder) 13) U of George Washington (DC) 14) Georgia Institute of Technology 15) U Of California (irvine) However I am not sure if I am overestimating my capabilities or if understating them. Of course I will try to write a promising statement of purpose and try and get good recommendation letters. But I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback. thank you very much.
