  1. 2/4, one funded...just hoping it's the one I want!
  2. Can't fax LORs, waived my right to see them, plus they need to be signed and sealed.
  3. Ok how about this one... Penn State was the only application that asked for hard copies of LORs. On their website, they say "Apply by submitting the items listed below in one complete packet." I somehow misplaced one of my letters, one of my absolute WORST fears. The letter writer is out of the country for break, but said she could have our department coordinator print out a copy of the letter on January 4 when our campus opens back up. The due date for the application is also January 4, and I'm sure Penn State is also closed until then, so asking their dept. coordinator probably isn't worthwhile. My question is this: do I send "one complete packet" a day late (January 5) OR do I send a packet with everything except the late letter?
  4. just nursing my addictions affections for coffee and beer
  5. Close, in South Dakota!
  6. Yes, this makes more sense. The OP does not...
  7. If you currently have a 3.98, what does an updated transcript really add? .01? This seems to me like a waste of your time, although I can't really think of any reason not to do it if you really want to.
  8. Just saw this on an application I just submitted "Submission of fraudulent credentials (including omission of information on previously attended institutions of higher learning) may also be a criminal offense" Do you really want to take this chance?
  9. you might look into history of science/(sociology of) science and technology studies programs if you're into the work of Latour, Law, Hetherington, etc. on actor-network theory. On a whole though, both networks and Deleuze more generally are really popular in many disciplines and departments right now.
  10. Yeah, that's better...personally, I'm a fan of the introductory anecdote, but some people really aren't...there's a thread about that around here somewhere.
  11. yeah, sorry for the brevity...it just sounds wordy, pretentious, and is a mouthful. I had to read it three times before I understood what you were trying to get at. I agree with mudlark - just get straight to the point.
  12. One of the profs I emailed at Minnesota suggested that I hop on over for a chat/tour (granted I'm in St. Paul), and they set up a lunch session with current grad students too. Why did people suggest stopping by the department as bad?
  13. I say go for it. Honor is a great word, and expresses your enthusiasm in an appropriate way.
  14. I did WAY better on the actual verbal part. I think my Powerprep scores were 590V/780Q 620V/720Q Actual: 690V/750Q
  15. I also did extremely well with this book (690v, 750q, 5.5aw). Obviously it wasn't the ONLY thing I used, which is never a good strategy. But the book has some great tips for how to take the test.
  16. How's this one...I'm applying directly after undergrad and the prof. told me to take a year off! that hurts the nerves...
  17. the highest I scored on verbal practice was 640, and I was averaging about 600. Got a 690 on the real test!
  18. You should probably mention/explain in your SOP (or somewhere) why it took you 6 years to get through the program (because you were doing all kinds of other fun/important stuff). So sorry to throw a wrench in this discussion...as I noted earlier, your application is bound to be great!
  19. Damn, well way to go! I certainly have a hard enough time working part time.
  20. You have absolutely nothing to worry about, as far as I can tell. I don't know about communications, but I wouldn't worry about an MA with those qualifications. Write a great SOP and you'll have the full package. However, did you really work full time during college? As in 40 hours a week? I find that kind of hard to believe.
  21. tip top, looking for help with this too. already missed the major US grants...
