  1. you might be interested in the work of julie guthman at uc santa cruz
  2. I second this, avoid the burbs at all costs
  3. email just a heads up, there is a results search button at the top of this page, if you hadn't noticed it or if you're new. Typing in penn state and geography, for example, will show all the data that people have entered for said college and program, including when and how they were notified, for what program, etc.
  4. If you haven't heard back, it probably means you are on a waitlist.
  5. yeah, I got my acceptance from Penn State 1-2 weeks ago. The letter said they were offering acceptance+funding to only about a dozen people...
  6. I would say that not being contacted at all means waitlisted, not rejection. There would seem to be no reason to keep you hanging otherwise.
  7. well, I see that berkeley didn't like any of us..bummer
  8. awesome! congrats! really wish I would hear something back from berkeley soon...now that I've heard from one of my upper programs, I just want to hear something from them so I know whether I will have to make a though decision.
  9. cool idea, but you know stats aren't everything . In any case, I'll fill it out when I hear back from all the schools to which I applied. You can find average GRE statistics for Minnesota here: http://www.grad.umn.edu/programs/select_program.html?l=t
  10. someone posted a rejection last week with this comment "A professor let me know informally in an email, and also said that official notifications should go out in about a week."
  11. ah, the geography results search seems so slow! too bad there aren't more of us here to contribute. In any case, at least I can apparently hope to hear back from berkeley this week....... I bet the OSU came from mb1212. Judging from her or his interests, I wouldn't be surprised if he/she applied to work with Joel Wainwright at OSU.
  12. I'm in geography, just linking you to the results page
  13. wow...hit 367 users online today!

  15. Congrats! I too got an acceptance from the U of MN today!
  16. No, I haven't heard anything back from Penn State. The DGS assistant was prompt when I emailed her before, so if you have any Q's, might as well send out an imail
  17. Oh hey, I just sent you a pm papertiger. I haven't heard anything except "your application is complete." ugh.
  18. Ugh, I decided to wait for the Jan 22 cycle...I am sure that I won't get funded.
  19. Honestly, I wouldn't feel so bad if I had to wait a year and apply again...except that I really don't want to make my LOR writers put up with another 5-10 applications!
  20. hmm, there's another thread on this somewhere... In any case, maybe it's my liberal arts education, but I find that professors are generally a bit keener than this. As far as "the larger academic world"... Yes, there are some complainers, but women's/gender/sexuality/queer theory, methodology, and studies have been established as real disciplines and also as important areas of studies within many other disciplines (eg, geography, where I'm at). Certainly much work remains to be done...
  21. I think there's a reason they ask for email addresses for your LOR writers...maybe they get notified if you do/don't get in or maybe the schools just want some contact in case they want to follow up. The reason I say this is because one of my apps asked for hard copies only and then asked for email addresses in a separate hard copy sheet I had to fill out.
  22. As mentioned a few times in this thread, Minneapolis is GREAT without a car. In fact, it is absolutely awful to live here with a car. You have to move it at 8am whenever there's a heavy snow. Not fun.
  23. I only applied to four geography programs, as per what socialpsych said.
  24. What's the OTHER board?
