    Electrical Engineering University of Toronto or Wait?

    Hi Guys,

     

    I have offers for research (MaSc. program with funding) at U of T, and I've gotten an official acceptance of which I must reply back by March 24.  In the meantime, it is still possible for me to get accepted into the PhD program for research at UCLA and Cornell, both of which are my choices over U of T.  However, up to this point I haven't heard anything from these schools and the result page already had some acceptances.  Should I assume I got rejected and just accept U of T?  If after accepting the offer I got offers from UCLA or Cornell, what should I do to inform my U of T prof that I am not going to be your student in fall? (I know it looks bad especially after you officially said yes).

    Right when I saw this, I got my rejection :(. It was a good run everyone, but it wasn't meant to be :'(

     

    I feel you...I got my rejection around now also :(  Applied to PhD but not even consider for MS.  Oh well hope for the best for other schools.

    Well I am in the same boat.  I submitted my apps to the schools but I didn't contact POI beforehand (though I did research on their background).  After submitting the apps, regarding contacting POI, I initially felt awkward but my mom urged me to do it, for the sole purpose that the profs might have some sort of impression on me.  Even if they have no say on the selection committee, who knows, maybe if it comes down to two people equally qualified this email could be the tie-breaker.  I even sent Christmas cards to them after the emails.  Regarding the emails, only one prof replied, telling me that he has no say in the selection process but wished me good luck.  That was it.  I guess we have nothing to lose if we sent out the emails.  And as for the Christmas cards, I don't think the profs are going to be annoyed receiving a Christmas from someone?  :D

    Canadian Applying to Tier 1 US Schools for Engineering PhD/MS

    Hi Everyone,

     

    I have applied to some tier 1 US schools for EE programs for PhD/MS, and I am more or less concerned about my GPA.  It is only around 3.26, and the most recent semester I got 3.50.  However, I am in a really tough program, called Engineering Science at University of Toronto, which is known for giving harsh grades on courses.  How will this take into consideration of the admission decisions?  Even though my school uses the 4.0 grading scale, I think it is still more or less a different system than in the US?  I think I have strong LORs, SOPs, and I do have research + internship experience in related fields.  My GRE is 157V/167Q/5.0AW.  I also expressed my fit in all the programs that I applied in my SOPs.

    Thanks for the replies.  I have applied to 8 grad schools; 5 phD and 3 MS and for the MS ones I didn't mention anything about working with a professor since I figured MS you just take classes (not even Masters thesis was required for the three schools), and my SOPs for MS school apps were all POI-free.  Is this generally how master thesis-less MS programs work?
