  1. Hi guys... I was wondering if anyone's familiar with MSPP's policy on deferment. whether they allow it at all, whether they guarantee (or reconsider) funding, when we're supposed to tell them by, etc. Thanks guys.
  2. hey guys... related to this question, can we defer enrollment after accepting an offer? I'm sure schools have different policies, but was wondering generally speaking what their policies are...
  3. This is what the website says: The application priority due date for the 2014-2015 academic year is December 1, 2013. Early applications are encouraged, to ensure timely receipt of all required documentation. Applications received after the December 1st deadline may be considered, but will have reduced opportunities for admission, financial support, and housing. Do you guys think it's worth submitting app now? I definitely want to be considered for financial support... also, if anyone has any idea how generous ucla is with financial aid? (i'm also an international student) btw it states on the website that the majority of apps gets reviewed in Jan/Feb, so this sounds like it's not too late to submit application now? (and still be considered for financial aid?) Many thanks
  4. one of the schools i'm very interested in had jan 2 deadline (and another earlier in december). i sent the gre score that i just got, but am wondering if I can update my gre score (take the gre again on jan 22) in early feb (since app review's likely to be in progress still then) any idea if ad coms would consider new/updated gre scores? I can contact the schools and find out, but just wondering how ad coms approach this in general... my gre score wasn't bad - v163 m 168 w 4. think I can do better on verbal but positive writing score wont really improve. just have a horrible undergrad gpa, so trying to make up for that. thanks guys
  5. the general yale grad admission guideline is 500-1000 words for sop (not jackson specific). mine's longer (~1300)... any idea how firm the word limit is? thank you!
  6. K I just took PowerPrep test.... i'm copy pasting both issue and argument essays but if anyone can rate/provide comments for either issue or argument, i'll be super grateful! am an international so this is HARD for me.... thank you!! The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station. "Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand our coverage of weather and local news on all our news programs" At first glance, the memorandum may make sense; however, to fully evaluate the claim, we need much more evidence/information. The first evidence we need to evaluate the argument is whether the complaints received are representative of the entire viewers' opinions. While the memorandum states that 'most of the complaints' that were received from the viewers were concerned with the station's coverage of weather and local news, it is mute on how many of such complaints were received. If the station received only a small number of compliants, they are simply not representative of the whole population' (viewers') opinion and has little bearing on whether the station should change its news contents. Conversely, if the station received complaints from the majority of the viewers, then, the station should make serious note of the complaints and respond accordingly. Another evidence we need for evaluation of the argument is the nature of their compliants. The memorandum stated that most compliants were "concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news."; however, HOW exactly were they concerned with the coverage of weather and local news? Those who filed complaints might simply hoped to view more of weather and local news; in this case, (assuming that this opinion is representative of the majority), the station should consider devoting more time to weather and local news instead of reducing time devoted to weather and local news. Or perhaps the viewers simply complained about the quality of the weather and local news (but were opposed to actually reducing time dedicated to weather and local news). If this was the case, it would also not make sense for the station to devote less time to weather and local news. On the other hand, if the viewers complained about the undue attention devoted to weather and local news (and wanted the station to restore the time devoted to national news), then the station should consider devoting more time to national news. Finally, to adequately evaluate the claim, we need to know for what reasons exactly local businesses canceled their advertising contracts with the station. Local businesses' termination of their advertising contracts may not have had anything to do with the contents of the late-night news program. Perhaps the economy contracted and the businesses were forced to terminate advertising campaigns. If this is the case, modifying contents of the news program will have no effect whatsover on whether local businesses renew advertising contracts or not. Conversely, if it turns out that local businesses indeed canceled their advertising contracts since they were not fond of the change in program's contents (and hoped to see more national news), then it will make sense for the station to consider restoring time devoted to national news. Hence, without being given information on why local businesses canceled their advertsiting contracts, we cannot fully evaluate the campaign. In sum, without the evidences stated, we cannot fully evaluate the claim. A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. The claim states that a nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. In my opnion, doing so definitely confers great advantages -- for example, it allows college admission officers to more accurately and easily assess each applicant's academic achievement. However, not allowing any flexiblity in requiring students to study the same curriculum inflicts harm in students' learning. One of the main benefits conferred by ensuring that students study the same national curriculum until they enter college is that as a nation, we can ensure that all students learn the basic materials and knowledge. Designing and developing curriculum is not an easy task. It requires months, sometimes years of careful planning so that we ensure that the curriculum adequately covers the depth and breath of knowledge expected of students at each level. And while private, affluent schools may well have the resources to develop such currilum, some schools, especially those located in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, may not have the financial and personnel resources to adequately develop well-designed curriculum. In this regard, developing a national curriculum and having every school to use the curriculum will promote equality in education -- every student studies a well-designed curriculum. In addition, requiring all of its students to study the same national curriculum has the advantage of faciliating the college admission process. Imagine applicants' high school curriculum differed greatly from one applicant to another. Then, admission committees will surely have a hard time assessing candidates' academic achievements since students were tested on different materials, by different test methods, etc. However, too rigid of a national curriculum does more harm than good. For example, consider two groups of students who attend arts vs. science high schools. Do we really want to make both groups of students study the same exact curriculum? Definitely not. In science high school, curriculum should reflect students' aptitutde and interests in science subjects; in arts school, students should spend more time studying and practicing arts. Consequently, we should make sure that the national curriculum allows enough flexiblity to reflect students' interests and aptitutde. One way to achieve this is to have the national curriculum offer studies in all core subjects (e.g. science, english) but allow each school to add materials/subjects to the curriculum. In sum, requiring all students to study the same national curriculum has its advantages -- it promotes equality in education and faciliates college admission process. Nonetheless, not allowing any flexibility in the national curriculum does more harm than good.
  7. Low GPA (B+ from top school) but otherwise strong application No chance with scholarship/fellowship? What do you think? Thank you!
  8. Hi guys, so there's info about me that wasn't highlighted elsewhere in my application (i submitted the app already) and was wondering if I can ask/have one of my recommenders to reflect that aspect in his letter? The info's not relevant to the work I did with him at all, it's more of personal information (circumstances I faced as an international student in undergrad that at least partially explains my not so stellar GPA and perhaps how I overcame some of difficulties) I'm sure he can be accommodating (and he knows me personally) but do you think adcom will find that okay/helpful? Would appreciate your help! Good luck w apps guys!
  9. thanks guys for all the answers she only asked if i'd want to see the letter before she submit it (didn't say anything else) and am wondering why she offered. I was thinking maybe she wants me to make sure i'm happy with the letter, but seems I'm on the wrong side. If I can't do anything about it, feeling like i'd also prefer to not see the letter for peace of mind...
  10. My heart dropped when you said a baby bunny cries!!!!!!!!! jk! Thanks guys for your help! Phew so it's not unethical to do so. Do you guys think it's okay to provide her feedback upon seeing the letter? If there are areas I want her to improve a bit that is... thoughts? I wonder if she expects me to given that she asked me? Feeling like it'd be a bit odd to see a letter, feel a bit ^&% about it and just let her submit it? *bit confused*
  11. So I obviously waived my right to see the letter and my recommender asked me if I'd like to see the letter before she submits. I know she wants to write a good letter for me (she knows me well, etc) so i'm guessing she wants to make sure she wrote the letter in a way that will really help me? Before she wrote the letter, she asked me what I'd like to be stressed in the letter so this can be the best letter it can be. I let her know some qualities but they were kinda vague I think (I didn't know how specific I can get with this). Like I said, I waived my right. Given that she offered, though, would it be okay for me to take a look? What do you guys think? Would appreciate any input.
  12. So if the application system doesn't let you change reference info (name, email) after you submitted AND somewhere on the website it says 'they won't be able to change essays or any other part of application' after you submitted Do you think there's no chance they'll let you change one of your reference writers? The original writer I had was MIA as the deadline approached. I confirmed with him (albeit a long time ago ) that he can write the letter, but since he was MIA (I contacted his personal assistant... no use. he usually replies promptly), I didn't feel good about having a reference request sent to him (Thought that may seem a bit rude). So I put in info of a reference that I was able secure last minute, but now that I heard back from the original writer I had in mind, I would really like to submit the original writer's letter instead...... Any tips guys?
  13. Guys, any idea if HKS ever lets you change one of the references?
