  1. Even though I did not attend NCSU, nor am I familiar with the program, I would still highly recommend it. I am from Charlotte, NC which is only 2.5 hours from Raleigh. It is a great school! There is plenty to do in historic downtown Raleigh & in which you will definitely find an internship. NCSU is also close to other towns for visit, such as Chapel HIll. In addition, it is 2 hours from the beach and 4 from the mountains.
  2. Yesterday was very much a big day for me. I received an acceptance letter from my Plan B school and I also got offered a TAship from my Plan A school! I finally have some clarity! Excited to make my first big move out of state from NC to Alabama! Good luck to everyone & happy decision making!
  3. Received an official acceptance from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) MA in Sociology program yesterday via e-mail to check website. I received my undergraduate degree in Sociology from UNCC. I will be declining though simply because I would prefer to experience something new for my graduate studies and have been offered a teaching assistantship from another university. The faculty at UNCC have been great to work with & I will continue to keep in touch with. Charlotte, NC is also a wonderful place to live! Many students who earn a MA in Sociology from UNCC have gone on to pursue a PHD in top programs such as NYU or Chapel Hill afterwards. If anyone has any questions about this program or Charlotte, NC in general- please feel free to message me! I will gladly help!
  4. Mxaveryeverhart- From Charlotte to Greensboro- Wishing you a congratulations!!
  5. Thanks beekay for the congrats!! Can anyone claim the recent NYU Post? Congrats to whomever it may be!!!
  6. I got accepted into the University of Alabama today- MA in American Studies program!! Beyond excited! I will be notified of funding information next week! Best of luck everyone!!! What is meant to be is meant to be!
  7. First off, thanks for taking the time to read I received an e-mail from the admissions director of the program/school that I applied to. He simply asked a general question regarding my application and left me with a final impression that he would notify me of the decision made by the end of the week via e-mail. This occurred last Tuesday. Keep in mind, this graduate program follows the rolling admissions method and it has only been two weeks since my application has been under the status of "complete and ready for review." However, I have not heard anything since we communicated via e-mail last Tuesday! I have spoken to a few graduate students and they suggest that I write a follow up e-mail to the director in case he got caught up in doing other things. However, I am on the fence because I feel as though it is more traditional to wait and I do not want to push a decision in fear of that it may ruin my chances of being admitted. Does any one have an advice? Or has anyone been in a similar situation?
  8. I am referring to Alabama. And yes- HJ2012 what a tease! Received another e-mail stating that I will be notified by the end of the week, now. So anxious. Doing everything in my might to take my mind off these apps.
  9. Received an e-mail from a school informing me that they will notify me of their decision by tomorrow. beyond nervous. I just want to know NOW!!!!! haha
  10. Happy to hear that I am not the only one so anxious. Slightly wishing that I didn't have a desk job for the time being. I am checking my applications every hour, on the hour. haha
  11. LesSoc- I received an e-mail from the graduate student at NC State and communicated with her VIA e-mail due to my work schedule. In addition, with consent, she passed my e-mail along to another graduate student within the Socy of Food and Environment program area. They have been incredibly helpful!!
  12. lacicolleen- First off, I spent part of my undergraduate studies at Appalachian State and I absolutely loved it there. I was very pleased with the faculty members and just in general with the way that services are provided at that school. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte though and I have no regrets. In all honesty, Appalachian State is not the best school for funding. But it is definitely worth giving it a shot because you won't meet a single soul that is not happy to be there! It is a college town- but plenty to do if you love the outdoors. If you need any more insight about the school then just contact me Your scores are actually great and with a double major you are certainly in a good spot. I was considering UT Austin because I heard how great their liberal arts and arts programs are. But I missed the deadline by the time someone recommended it to me. As for Alabama- it is at the top of my list now. I have heard excellent feedback about their funding packages and I just feel like that is a huge deciding factor when searching for graduate programs.
  13. Thank you Macmc and hj2012 for your advice! I am more confident in the paper that I submitted now. I have indicated that it my intentions to combine my interest/passion of American studies with my background in sociological research and thus become a more effective writer. Anyone here applying to Alabama?
  14. So happy to see an American Studies forum! I would like some advice please! I am applying to an American Studies Graduate program. I graduated with a BA in Sociology and a minor in American Studies. My GPA is very high, GRE is low, and my letters of recommendations are very strong (including one from the chair of the Sociology department). My concern is that I am required to submit a writing sample and the sample that I am considering submitting is my final research in Sociology. The paper discusses the social health effects of energy drink consumption among college level students. However, this is not a direct American studies topic. I have, in fact, written papers in the past for my American studies courses but none of them required resources per say; they were all directly discussing American novels, films, or poets. Would it be an entirely BAD idea to submit my Sociology paper? Keep in mind, as I mentioned in my Statement of Purpose, I do in intend on studying the social history of America and American Literature. Thank you for your help and feedback.
