2014 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results

I got my wish - UW-Micro finally sent out my rejection email. Still a little disappointed (even though I had already assumed it was coming) but it is nice to have closure and now I can focus on the interviews that I do have without wondering about UW in the back of my mind. -

Quit my job - yay! Regardless of whether I get into grad school this cycle, I am moving so I am spending winter/spring dreading the logistics of that move. A single email from an admissions committee would really help me figure out where I am actually moving to. My master's thesis will be done (!) so I will have some time to read for fun again and I want to get a basic working knowledge of R and practical computing/programming. Eat at all my fav restaurants and spend time with all the friends until the big move. -

I had to email them two weeks ago because my status page still said that they had not received my GRE scores. The coordinator responded that they did actually have my scores and that my application was complete, but that's all I got from that encounter. I visited the campus over the summer and talked with Teresa and she said they usually get around 100 applicants and take 5 or 6. So slim chance, but since no one has heard anything, I'm still hopeful. Do you have any idea when invites went out last year? Also, if UW-Micro would just send out their rejections already, that would be great. -

Has anyone heard anything from the Berkeley Infectious Disease & Immunology program or the Baylor College of Medicine Molecular Virology & Microbiology program? -

It was the worst. I spent hours trying to find a blazer that wasn't too stuffy and didn't make me look like a box. None of my interviews have specified a dress code, so I'm just trying to find some middle ground between my usual cardigan and a business suit. -

Haha, way to be super clear about that, UW. I just want my rejection in a timely manner if that's the case, because I want to be able to move on. -

The date to confirm that I want to go to the Microbiology recruitment weekend isn't until Jan 23rd and the email made it sound like they would still be sending out invites if space opens up. You might still have a chance! -

It was you! I'm still holding onto some faint hope that I will get a UW invite, so I'm not going to confirm Davis yet. And I wish I was within driving distance because they are only giving a $250 travel voucher and I know it will cost more for me to get out of Washington. It always does. -

UC Davis Microbiology program invitation! February 21 and 22. I had been wondering about this one because I feel like I've seen someone on this forum who has had an invite to this Davis program in their sig for a while. I actually visited the campus this summer and met some grad students and really liked the atmosphere there. -

I just called Irvine and got the same information that you got. Should have checked Grad Cafe first! On the plus side, she was very nice on the phone, there's just not much she can do. I sent an email to Johns Hopkins to see if they have an alternate weekend that I can attend. Fingers crossed. I do so like to have options. On the negative side, I'm getting a little skittish about making hard confirmations (ie. purchasing the plane tickets) just in case another invite comes in that conflicts. This whole Irvine thing has me worried about that. I second this question. This wait has been the hardest since University of Washington has been my top choice for years. -

Well, this sucks. I got my invitation for UC Irvine yesterday and my invite to Johns Hopkins confirmed today and they are both Feb 6-8. Since Johns Hopkins was my first choice and I had already played the fool with them by not seeing their invite email until yesterday and thus replying past the deadline, I was hoping to not have to pester them for a different date and work with UC Irvine for an alternative date. But since the tickets haven't been purchased yet, I suppose I can go to the later Johns Hopkins weekend (which i believe someone said was in early March). UC Irvine really wasn't that willing to work with you? That seems kind of odd. Not even a Skype interview? Does anyone know if it makes a difference whether you go to the first or second interview weekend? I'm hoping the answer is no, so I don't have to feel weird about trying to go to the second Johns Hopkins weekend. -

So, I just checked my secondary email out of sheer paranoia and found my invitation to Johns Hopkins Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Recruitment Weekend buried in my spam folder. The letter said that the deadline to respond was January 7th. I sent a quick, apologetic, hopeful email just now, but I am dying. The invitation to my top school has been in my email since the 27th of December and I didn't know it was there?! Fml. -

It was my first invite and it is such a relief. It definitely gives you some reassurance that your application packet wasn't complete garbage because a group of people sat down and read it and still invited you to interview. That's a good feeling. -

And now for something completely different (ie. this is not about Stanford) - I just got an invite to interview at UC Irvine for the CMB program. The recruitment weekend is Feb 6-8. I'm so relieved; the radio silence was killing me. -

I am! Good to know, even though it's nice and vague. Thanks, Berkeley. -

I was doing really well at not looking at this site for a while (until today, obviously, when i had to go back and read everything I've missed). And I just have to say that I feel you about the anxiety thing. It is rough ride with the extra bonus of unmedicated anxiety. Just trying to think happy thoughts and not about the possibility of having a panic attack at an eventual (hopefully...) interview. Fun times. -

Haha. I'll join you in that club. At our first meeting, we should practice the art of deep breathing and not obsessively checking our email. -

Congrats! What are the interview dates? Did you get contacted by an individual department? So many questions! -

You are definitely not the only one that is still waiting. I am fairly certain that they do rolling admissions, but if you want to take one for the team and call them, no one would complain. -

Since I foresee spending a lot of time on this forum in the next few months, I guess it's only fair to share my stats. Let's do this thing! Undergrad Institution: Small, private university, definitely not well-known Major(s): Undergrad - Biochemistry, Master's - Biology Minor(s): None GPA in major: 3.75 (undergrad) Overall GPA: 3.72 (undergrad), 3.99 (master's) Position in Class: Unknown Type of Student: Domestic Female GRE Scores: Q: 158 (72%) V: 168 (98%) W: 4.5 (78%) Research Experience: 1 rotation in a molecular lab working on protein expression, 1 year of thesis research in an Immunology lab, 1.5 years of thesis research in a Microbiology/Phylogenetics lab Awards/Honors/Recognitions: 8 quarters on Dean's list (although this is irrelevant because I didn't put it on my applications) Pertinent Activities/Jobs: Lab TA for 4 years (while an undergrad and a grad student), 2 quarters of coordinating the lab for the microbiology class for nursing majors. Special Bonus Points: Poster Presentation at ASM General Meeting, very strong letters of recommendation (but not from professors who are well-known in the field) I'm mostly worried about the fact that it is taking me more than two years to finish my Master's degree. In my Research Statement/SOP, I briefly went into some of the setbacks and facility issues that we had, so I hope it just shows that I have perservence in the face of obstacles or something like that. Hopefully this Master's degree doesn't come back to bite me in the ass. -
For applicants to Immunology/Microbiology PhD programs

Yeah, this waiting game is not fun. I got an email from UCSF saying that due to the high volume of applicants to the BMS, decisions may be delayed until early/mid Jan. Other than that, my email has been quiet.
