  1. I saw Yales two years back, from what I remember they were some of the nice-est and most accomidating I came across. Everyone has there own for two years, except a few very large ones which are shared. high ceilings, windows, and a proper locking door. Very private, clean, and beautifully maintained like new. Two floors set up in a ring around a large center crit room that is two stories high, the hallway of the second floor of studios looks down into it. Hard to guess square footage maybe 10' x 15' for the single?
  2. Had a friend who went to Queens college and is in pretty heavy debt from it. A general rule of thumb is that public schools (anything like University of _______ or ________ State University) offer full funding while private schools usually do not, but will sometimes offer smaller scholarships from 10K-50% of tuition. Full funding is often part of a T.A. or G.A. position which means you will also be teaching classes and working for the department, which can put a considerable strain on ones time. Many state schools run three year programs for that reason. Places I know have full-funding: U. Texas Austin, Montclair State University (just outside NYC in Montclair NJ, a cool town on a direct train line), U Mass Amherst, Indiana U. Bloomington, Virginia Commonwealth University, U. Penn, Rutgers U., U of Arizona, U of Michigan Ann Arbor. There are others Im sure...
  3. MICA Hoffberger due to nnotify tommorrow the 3rd I believe via email. Even if I get in I'm pretty darn sure I'll go to Cranbrook anyways, so you got that going for you. Unless maybe they offer lots of money and it ends up being a lot cheaper. Was originally my first choice, but that was before visiting Cranbrook. Its Hogwarts and the people and the work there are spectacular.
  4. @spaced and santa: I will msg you with copies of the letters @yale acceptance: I think call and tell yale your situation, especially cause you honestly prefer them. "Yale is definetly my first choice but finances are an important factor in my decision. SAIC has offered me a very generous funding package... is there any flexibility..." something like that. Might not feel great but you are in the position of power now, they cannot repeal their acceptance so again nothhing to lose. Just be as nice as possible, worst case they say no.
  5. Thanks so much for the input, thats very helpful. Most folks here at VSC seem to say its a no brainer: Cranbrook. I visit Monday, hopefully it will be obvious. They are two extremely different programs, but I feel either could suit me well. Why am I always so damned polarized? alwways one extreme or another and generally both. @lilnova: thanks also for having a an opinion, and for being such an active member of our little community. Ive enjoyed your posts throughout. PAFA just uped the ante, I pretty sure I being offered as much as theyve ever offered anyone. This is amazing. My advice to all: ASK FOR MORE MONEY!! Really cant hurt and it works! its a lot easier than I thought. every school Ive asked has increased their award and the programs I tried to decline have also come back with revised financial packages and asked me to reconsider. If anyone wants help in how to approach/word this stuff, I will be happy to fwd emails along, apparently Im doing ok at it. Anybody else? PAFA or Cranbrook for painting?
  6. Hi everybody, Im in VT at the VSC (its amazing! so glad I came) it feels like its been so long, missed y'all! So I got into Cranbrook painting!!! Ahhhh!! Am flying out on Monday, have to decide quick. This is great but makin life complicated (it would be easier if the choice were made for me, not that I really want it to be). In the midst of what can only be described as a bidding war tween NYAA and PAFA, while MSU is giving me all it can and MICA still in the wings. What should I dooooo!? Right now its really between PAFA n Cranbrook. Currently the cost is comparable after awards.
  7. Thanks so so much for the info! Im sure I will have questions, but no time now. @Kewpies: effin awsome!!! Big congrats! good luck on the decision, let us know where you end up. Checking out for now kids, Vermont Studio Center in T minus 12 hours. Dont know what internet is like there. Good luck to all, and may I add that I totally agree with someone elses comment that *luck* is a major factor here. thank you all, best wishes.
  8. Hey gang, some info for MICA Hoffberger folks: Spoke with MICA on the phone, they said students have until the 7th to accept or decline their offer. They are expecting 2-3 people to say no (as is typical from years past). They then go back to the whole pool of 25ish alternates and select replacements based on the group they are expecting to attend, attempting to maintain a diversity of styles and find folks who'll jive together. So there is no next on the list, every alternate stands an equal chance (or so they say). They will notify all on the 21st. Hope is never lost... Speaking of which, still no word from Cranbrook since my interview!! said they'd tell me a week ago, driving me nuts! Right now PAFA looking like my best option, visited and could see myself there. Anyone know anything about PAFA or its reputation? Any input greatly appreciated.
  9. Thanks so much for the input, you offer me a huge reassurance! Hadnt heard much about the place beyond the website and some articles, but decided to go for it. I will make more money...and my job is cool with the time off...so what the hell? I am totally excited! @nova: no worries I could tell whatcha were trying to express, didnt read it as you knocking anybody
  10. Thanks! Is nice to have a choice. and thanks for the info too. changes things a little. she made it sound as though she was speaking to everyone the same day and notifying all on the same day too (today). Im going insane. Big congrats on the acceptence!! Im envious, do you think you'll go? Have you visited? Where else did you apply? Cranbrook and MICA are definetly my top choices, wasnt able to visit Cran in person though.
  11. @AggroCragg & ~*~: Have you heard anything from Cranbrook since your phone calls? Beverly said confidently that she would be emailing everyone today, but I still have no word and am getting skeptical its gonna come.
  12. CONGRATS on SAIC Tim!!! very happy for you bro, way to go! @littlenova: thats effin awsome!!! you must be sooo excited! very happy for you also!
  13. Finally! Mr. Postman! I am also an alternate for MICA painting. Rats... at least theres still hope, but its gonna be a long three weeks!
  14. How have folks been hearing from MICA Hoffberger? also, any word from Cranbrook Painting? The anticipation is killing me! My heart feels like it might burst... Interviewed: MICA Hoffberger Cranbrook Accepted: PAFA w/$ NYAA w/$ Montclair State, awaiting award (told I will be offered $) Rejected: UT Austin
  15. Cranbrook painting acceptances: Congrats to you both! Did you go through any kind of interview or they just flat out take you? They want me to do a phone interview on Wens. Very excited but scared to come so close and miss. Interviewed at MICA Hoff already, went well.

Littlenova: thanks for sharing bout MICA interview, mines on the 4th. Totally with you on that school, I wanna go sooo bad! after visting in the fall it went from low on the list to my first choice! UT is right up there with it though, I dont think I could turn thier funding down. No matter how good a program I cant see 50k in debt helping my career.
  18. Just got letter from PAFA, accepted with some funding! Man does that take some presssure off, phew!
  19. Hey gang, got my undergrad at UMass Amherst, could tell you a lot about it, ask whatever you please. When I was there the program was in sorta a transition, they were letting buildings die (literally, two were condemed during my time and a third burned to the ground!) in anticipation of the new Fine Arts building, which I have seen and is pretty spectacular. Also it consolidated all the crap that used to be sprinkled throughout the campus. Faculty was hit or miss, but there is enough that your likely to find folks you identify with. I stuck close to Trevor Richardson and Richard Yarde. Yarde is just a fantastic human being but I heard he is retiring after this year. Trevor is a character, sorta a tight ass and holds folks to a high standard but if your willing to work you will see dramatic improvement under him. If your not he will be very dismissive of you. Hanlon Davies is great too. New faculty was coming in as I was leaving so cannot comment on them. The place is problem filled but I wouldnt trade my time there for the world. Ask me anything, Id love to share.

Hey TIm! If your who I think you am, I member having a nice chat with you as we walked through the hallways. I am sure a picture would refresh my memory, I was kinda delerious that day on account of sixth street the night before, haha. What a wonderful universe. Glad your still in the fight too, how effin awsome would it be if we end up there together? Still no word on this end, my waitlist letter had arrived by now last year. Holding my breath...
  21. @littlenova: That would be awsome! Any clues as to what to expect would be really helpful. @lapzirdonocomad: Why did you drop out of MICA if you don't mind me asking?
  22. @ RKSim: Congrats on UC Davis! Been reading your posts for months and silently rooting for you. Your work is intimidating-ly strong. Way to go! @ littlenova: Rooting for you also, what day are you interviewing @ MICA? Think Im going on Thursday March 4th, but havent gotten confirmation yet. (Hoffberger, that is, realize your photo)

I applied last year to painting and was wait-listed, that letter was postmarked Feb. 17. Havent heard yet this year, hoping thats a good thing... RKSim's info is accurate as far as I know. Last year 272 apps, 10 accepted 6 painters remaining spots divided.
  24. Got an interview invite via email from MICA Hoffberger this morning! 2/16 (hooray!) The list: MICA Hoffberger - interview no news: Cranbrook UT Ausitn NYAA PAFA
  25. Good thinking, been so curious. www.adelmanart.com made the site myself... it is not great.
