  1. SAIS will release PhD info on the 17th now according to their updated website...
  2. Haha, well played. Opens up an interesting concept though - the implications of personally transferable acceptances... I wonder if that would be more or less efficient than the waitlist system... Anyone under? Fortune favors the bold, and all...
  3. Boazczoine, good thoughts. I think that is a good place to start. Additionally, don't forget that Philly got hit by a lot of snow and missed days are not one to one. A missed committee meeting because of snow may have taken a week or more to reschedule so on and so forth... I predict, with no justification at all, that friday will be the day. Who wants over and under?
  4. Thankfully most folks 'round these parts seem like decent, likeable folks, so there is that bright side.
  5. Yea, that was really bad. A future potential colleague, ladies and gents, a future potential colleague...
  6. The latest UVA acceptance is me, and as it is my first of the cycle, I am especially pumped! They are doing a rolling admission off of a list. I'm IR/Comp., so I can't speak for what may be happening on the American/Theory side of the house, though. Must say, this board has been a constant source of support. Congrats to all who have acceptances so far, and for those still waiting on some good news, good luck and keep with it!
  7. Yea, it was a rough day for sure... there is always tomorrow, though...
  8. Nicely done! Here's hoping phone calls not necessary for good news in the mail....
  9. RCD2 - congrats! Had you received a phone call before the letter?
  10. Some of those funding issues at GW and G'Town are the result of them being in a city where a handful of organizations are willing to fund students before they return back to government or the military. Conventional wisdom is that you personally should never pay to get a PhD, the ROI just isn't there. However, if work is willing to do it, then accepting an unfunded offer is much, much easier to do. Still, for those of us without independent wealth or someone else picking up the tab, those unfunded offers are just killer teases... Once again edited for terrible spelling
  11. Well, a really quiet day... What big ones are still out there? Harvard, Yale, JHU, Penn, and then some of the more specialty programs and those doing rolling admission... I don't know about you all, but I'm ready for this process to start coming to a close. My days will be much more productive when this is all finished shaking out...
  12. I just keep logging back into the G'town application... That is where some other schools posted results...
  13. To HL Slam and any others fearing striking out this cycle, a few thoughts: 1) These applications do not define who you are as a person, your intelligence, or your promise as a future academic. If you want to be an academic, you will find ways of strengthening your application and applying again in the future. There are several folks on this forum who should serve as an inspiration... I forget who it was, but I read from one poster that they nailed Columbia after 30 applications. There is hope! 2) All the really good things in life bring with them the risk of failure. If you want it, don't give up. If you choose not to apply in the future, make it your choice. Don't let someone in the shadows drag you down. 3) These applicaitons do not define who you are as a person. A good friend and immensely successful academic once told me that smart is cheap. It can be bought or found on any street corner. Instead, folks who show they can work hard and are of good character will find success in the end in whatever they do. 4) Finally, if you decide an academic career is not for you (and really make it your decision!), remember, that you were even applying to these types of excellent schools suggests you have great skill. That skill can be turned into any number of exciting, meaningful, challenging, and fun careers. In short - getting rejected is the worst. It is hard. But rest assured, it is not a judgment of you as a person. All works out in the end. Edited for terrible spelling.
  14. Welp, there is the Stanford bomb. My regrets to folks taking that hit...
  15. This is a really rough cycle given that Hogwarts rejection... Still, I hear the DADA Department there has had a hard time keeping good faculty, so it may not be the best bet for the near future. Highlight of my obsessive results checking day.
  16. This breakdown seems about right to me. The line between second and third tier may be a bit fuzzier when you start looking at the specific placements out of certain institutions, but as a rule of thumb, this seems right. Remember though, outside of perhaps H/P/S/M?, the number and especially quality of publications you have as you come into the market makes a huge difference. Likewise, your ability to demonstrate quant skills cannot be understated. For example, a tier two or three applicant with some killer papers in top journals and a dissertation well on the way to book quality offers something different to a selection committee than an unpublished tier one applicant. This type of person may never teach at Harvard, but there are many good R1s out there where this applicant will be taken seriously. Anyhow, these are just my views after having talked for a long time to a lot of profs...To continue a theme, there is always hope, and hard work goes a long way...
  17. Anyone have any idea how Emory is releasing results this year? I was not invited down to interview in Georgia, but I also have not gotten a rejection yet either. Just finding it strange given the number of rejections posted already... Thoughts?
  18. Congrats to all of the recent admits! I leave for a few days and all kinds of good things happen... To those who haven't heard any good news yet (myself included), remember, we only need one!
  19. Big wins today... congrats to the new acceptances!
  20. Congrats to the latest admits at Chicago, NYU, UIUC, and Rochester... Some big wins in there, folks, well done! A great start to what will certainly be a very big two weeks...
  21. Remember everyone, all you need is one acceptance! We will (almost) all miss many more than we get in this crazy process... Anyhow, one school out of the running and twelve to go... Bring on those emails next week!
