  1. finished interviews! yay time to make a choice!

  2. i have been on an interview at Mt Sinai and i am a domestic applicant. i don't think doing phone interviews reduces your chances. if you could go in person you would want to go in person because that way they get a sense of you as person and a graduate student. also visiting is also good since you can meet the graduate students and ask them questions that you may have. you can also get a feel for what the institution is like and you can also see the place that you will be spending the next 5 years of your life. from what i can tell mount sinai is international friendly. almost 50% of their students are international, at least that is what they told us. they also have some really good faculty and it would be nice if you can meet them and see if you would like to rotate in their labs. hope that helps.
  3. did anyone get accepted to UCSF?
  4. got invites from UCSF, UNC, yale, cornell and columbia. yay!
  5. im in the sciences and so far i have heard that business casual is fine. i think if you were a suit that might put you a bit out of place since i have rarely seen any science professors in a suit. i guess business casual is ok for the ivies too if you are in sciences? yes or no? anyone? im from CA and my professors are the khaki kind of guys and button ups for most women.
  6. i heard from some others that the attire is business casual. would that be the same if you are interviewing at public university or an ivy?
  7. I always wonder for people in the sciences, how do you end up in the current lab that you are in? What sort of criteria are you looking for when joining a lab? How do can one avoid being an unhappy camper? How do you evaluate potential PIs? What sorts of Journal Publications are good and which ones are not so good? What do you look for in PIs track record? any help would be appreciated.
  8. i got an experiment to work! after 48 years of trying! lol
  9. i forgot to the word "the" in my application to UNC but they're the first university to invite for an interview =) i guess it doesn't matter so much as long the sentence made sense
  10. i got a phone call just now from UNC BBSP for a january interview!!! im so excitedDDDDDDD!
  11. i think it will be best to think about it in january. it seems like most of the program i applied to just finished their deadlines and are probably organizing the adcom...
  12. My GRE's aren't stellar either. but my grades and letters should be good too. lets hope for the best
  13. hehe i just noticed a lot of the people here do neuroscience. i have a friend who is now attending UCSF and his profile looks similar to most of the ones i have seen here.
  14. oh ok. i'll just freak out some more then. lol
  15. i don't know... i feel anxious like in a freaking out mode!!!! some people got interviews already and i have not... i wondered too if it had to do with the program...sigh*** i wish UCSFFFFF will take me...but that is wishful thinking
  16. has anybody gotten any interviews???? science folks?!?!?
  17. good question. i must say from working with the cell cycle in yeast a lot those proteins have human homologs which are targeted by various anticancer drugs.... so with that i ended up working in a lab as an Amgen scholar that does drug studies ie mechanistic studies. our lab had a collaboration with Abott so I tested on of their experimental drugs. I had 3 to test originally but one already took so long. lol. and my research in immunology which is the most current one that I am working on is aimed at mechanistic action of cytokines and growth factors which serve as pharmacological targets for inflammation. having done so much research on signaling (the cell cycle is a downstream target of most signaling pathways too) i was drawn to pharmacology...i like drugs too. i just find their action on biological systems miraculous. (thats if they have small side effects and small dosage requirements) What country are u from GREmot? and tell me about your research.
  18. I think the CV should contain details relevant to academics and your career. At least when a person from the adcoms said that in the sciences the CV should contain strictly academics, research, related work experience and sometimes service.
  19. oh wow!!! lol. i found that funny no offense. i have really bad eyes too. after working on several SOPs sometimes i feel like i'm becoming cross eyed. and i suppose that with deadlines right around the corner everyone feels that feeling of just wanting to hit that button. its probably a good idea to never look back when you hit it.
  20. oh dear... i was missing the word "the" on my last sentence. my friends who i asked to read it did not catch it either. that submit button was sooooo tempting i fell in the trap. now i feel really bad.
  21. if you are in the sciences contacting professors does not mean much... i have had pretty good responses from those i have contacted but they always say they have a central application process. so anyone correct me if i maybe mistaken.
  22. hmmm... i guess for me whenever a faculty interested me i tried to stay away from saying things like that. in general in my SOP i tried not to sound like im sucking up them. so i always end up saying...Dr. X is a potential faculty that I would like to meet and possibly train with..his research on blah blah... i dont know if that helps...
  23. hey guys =) good stats mine is..okayish... biology major at a UC. cgpa 3.94 and major 3.96 GRE 670Q 520V 4AW yeah i kinda crashed during the real test. too late now. 1 year in a telomere lab doing yeast 2 hybrid assays. co author in a paper published in an undergrad journal Amgen scholar with 2 published abstracts and 1 co authorship in a manuscript 2 years in an immunology lab with 2 undergrad grants from an honors society and the university i am attending still working on a publication (my lab is currently low on funding and research is pretty slow) ohhh i almost forget..letters of rec. coming from my past mentors who are professors at my uni and 1 from a professor with a pretty high position from another UC. so far im applying to pharmacology programs at yale u mass med suny buffalo nyu u rochester columbia ucsf uci mount sinai cornell unc
  24. I'm applying to the sciences and I'm quite surprised that Yale has a diversity statement which is separate from the statement of purpose and is optional. Is anyone filling them out? Are they also considered as a part of the application? How do separate diversity statements factor in admissions?
  25. hey guys! so i managed to shorten it down to 999 words. i tried to spell out the name of the proteins that i worked on and abbreviated them afterwards but that did not work out. if i had used just the shortened form then its perfect length. i would just assume that they know the designations since these proteins are quite common
