  1. Anyone heard anything more from Michigan yet?
  2. I only applied to places where most of the graduates get tenure track jobs after graduating. I don't care if it's an R1 university or a shitty one in rural Tennessee, I'll be happy either way. I would also like to point out that a place like famae volent is going to skew pretty significantly to the negative. Most of the people on there on the people that don't get jobs - there's not really any reason to keep on at a place like that if you get hired. Not to say that finding an academic job isn't difficult, but my instincts (and very basic knowledge of formal statistics) say that a place like that will make things seem even bleaker than they actually are.
  3. Same, nor from NYU. I also haven't heard anything at all from UPenn, but I applied to Ancient History and not Classical Studies. Not sure whether interviews got sent out at the same time for Ancient History as for Classical Studies.
  4. At least according to them, they are only flying in a few people from their shortlist, but that everyone on the shortlist is still in consideration. Presumably, however, the people they fly in are those they are most impressed with from the short list.
  5. For Classics or one of the interdepartmental programs?
  6. Also, how are people's interviews going? I feel like mine with Michigan went half ok and half shitty. I felt like I answered all of their questions about why I would fit in at Michigan well (also we ended up talking about Vonnegut and American Hustle for about half the interview), but I think my nervousness caught up to me when they asked about my research interests, and I didn't explain my ideas very well/in an easy to follow manner.
  7. Agreed, at least for me (Homer + Ancient Near East), Michigan and Harvard seem complementary. And Chicago seems like the most obvious place for me with the PAMW track...
  8. Looks like Harvard and UChicago are out.
  9. Got an email (at 11:00pm on a Friday ) saying I'd been selected for the interview shortlist at Michigan.
  10. I have a lot of strong connections at Columbia, I'm surprised I didn't at least get an interview for Classical Studies.
  11. Looks like I can probably scratch Princeton off the list then.
  12. Do you know whether they've done all of the graduate groups under classics or just Classical Studies?
  13. So I've realized that something I've thought about the multi-year fellowship support packages for PhDs that many good private research universities offer might be only an assumption. Most seem to offer a stipend without work obligations the first year, then the second year you TA, and after that you teach. I thought that after the first year, you received funding above and beyond the stipend to compensate you for the work that you did. However, I've been looking for confirmation for this, and I can't find any. Are typically ALL of the PhD students paid the same amount regardless of whether they are TAing/teaching?
  14. Just heard back from OSU. I got in. Hopefully this bodes well for me getting into a school besides my safety!
  15. I know several people at Boulder. They really like it.
  16. What are your research interests? I'm mostly interested in the David and Goliath scene as possibly influenced by duel scenes in the Iliad and other topics related to the Philistines.
  17. A few will notify in January (OSU, NYU-ISAW). Most do sometime in February or March though.
  18. Once you get past the weird dialect and words, Homer is very easy (and very enjoyable). The New Testament is also very easy, and probably more suitable to your needs.
  19. Hi, I'm applying to (many) PhD programs this year. OSU, UChicago (PAMW), Princeton (AMW), UPenn (Ancient History), Harvard, Columbia (Classical Studies), NYU, Cornell, and UMich. I'm interested in Greek and Near Eastern interactions in literature during the Archaic Age. So I play around with Hebrew and Akkadian as well as Greek and Latin. Hopefully, eventually Ugaritic, Egyptian, and Aramaic as well.
