  1. Yes, my UCLA rejection last night came out in the middle of the night.
  2. Got a positive reply from Oregon today, anyone else?
  3. Yes, GRE / GPA isn't everything. I have been accepted to two programs (one my top choice) with one of those two things lacking. Though in my case it was GREs that were pretty poor (especially my Q), but my GPA was alright (3.6+). The point is, if you are an attractive candidate, it seems they are willing to looking over one or two smudges on your application. Good luck!
  4. I have been accepted to my top choice program (MA) - I'm really psyched on that. I was also sent an e-mail asking to be interviewed via Skype for a TA position in the department (I live outside the U.S.) and am really nervous about it. I know that my (financial) ability to go to the school depends on getting this TAship. The TAship would be tied to a teaching a foreign language, but I don't know exactly what the responsibilities of a TA are, though from the looks at other TA profiles on the website it seems that TAs handle their classes on their own. This is all good and well with me as I have extensive teaching experience (albeit not at the university level) and I think it will be great experience as I continue to move onto the PhD and beyond. I'm wondering though if I should ask the department questions before the interview or wait until the I am talking with the professors to ask. Also, I am really at a loss as to what the interview is going to be like. I know the professors who are going to be there and of the three only one of them is a professor directly in my field, the other two are linguistics professors. Has anyone ever gone through something similar? Any ideas what to expect? I figure there will be some communication in said foreign language (which is fine, I have confidence in that department....I think) but I just don't know what these types of interviews entail. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  5. lunarem, I would recommend looking into the South Park area for living. It is close to downtown, but separated from all the big party areas. It is a nice, old part of town, and doesn't feel like everything was pulled out of a pre-fab factory and thrown together last year. You can get to classes without a car which will be nice. As far as places to hang out for your boyfriend. Will he have a car? If not, where are you staying? I would check out downtown for sure. Blue Moose cafe is a fixture, also Black Bear has some real yummy food. If you want to see a different part of town ZenClay is a nice cafe over in Suncrest. Great tea selection. As far as Valentine's day goes...someone who has lived there more recently may be better served at fielding this, but Madeleine's was always a hit. Let me know if you've anything more specific. I haven't lived in Morgantown since 2005 (and have been in Japan for the last 5 years) but things don't change all that much. I go back every year or two and I find myself liking the place more and more as I think about it now. I only left because doesn't every 18 year old want to get out of their hometown?
  6. Teotihuacan has nailed a lot of the finer points. I grew up in Morgantown but I currently live outside the country. I will say that having a car makes life much easier. I suppose one could make it between Suncrest and downtown thanks to the rail-to-trail (a public works project that converted old railroads into a walking/biking trail) but you are going to be quite limited. I only say this because I live with just a bike now and every time I go home I go crazy having to sit in traffic in car (the traffic has gotten much worse over the years and I don't see an end in sight to that). The city is growing fast, pretty much any large brand store is now within a 30 minute drive from the campus. The city is overwhelmingly white (though that is the norm for WV) but WVU - specifically the grad school - has a more international flavor. Let's see, football runs the town during the Fall, if you don't like it then you can ignore it (well, sort of, Morgantown becomes the biggest city in the state on game days), but if you do like it then you are in luck. Do you have anymore specific questions? I'd be happy to give more details.
  7. Someone just posted a UCLA - PhD acceptance. Congrats! It looks like a great program. Alas, I applied as well, though it doesn't look like it worked out in my favor.
  8. I ended up deciding not to send an application to Stanford (their application fee was like $125, no?). I kind of wish I had, only so I would have heard something by now!? Things seem to be looking really good for you Tomoe-san! ナイス!
  9. My oh my, you have had some interaction with people! More than I can say for myself. Just a question since you mentioned it. When people refer to their 'POI', who is that? Is it a professor in the department or the student affairs person or...I never really fully understood the term as I was applying. I mean I contacted a few professors at some schools, does that mean they are my POI?
  10. Has anyone heard anything yet? This waiting thing is tough!
  11. What I want to know is why all the STEM results come out so much earlier than the humanities.
  12. Yea this is great. Although I am sure there is a lot of overlap, I'd love to see one for the humanities.
  13. Have you ever heard Morphine? VERY similar styles going on here:
