  1. Hey all, I'm trying to figure out what my next steps after graduation should be. I have a low uGPA currently 2.95 should be a little over a 3.00 by the time I graduate. I have some pretty good research experience and a paper submitted. My funds are extremely limited so relocation can only happen under perfect conditions. Should I apply for a Masters at a neighboring university where I can definitely recieve a TA position? Or should I apply for a Research Tech position at my home institution and see if I can get into the Masters program here in the next round? My home university is in the top 10 ranked in my field. The neighboring school does not have a strong reputation. My ultimate goal is a Ph.D. Thanks!
  2. become a stripper... definitely become a stripper. I'll make way more money and my back won't hurt from pipetting. Just kidding. Probably going to go for a masters program and do one of two things 1) become totally disenchanted with research and question everything that I've done with my life or 2) retain what little fragment I have left of my hopes and dreams and suck it up for round 2.
  3. Hi all, I submitted my applications in early-mid December to a number of Synthetic Biology PhD programs, but just had a paper submitted this week as a contributing author. I feel a little dumb contacting admissions departments with an updated CV for a paper that is pending, but I have a low GPA (2.95) and this is my first paper. I've only previously presented posters and done two presentations at conferences. I can't help but feel that every little bit helps. Do you think it's worth it to submit an updated CV or should I wait until I know if the paper is being accepted? Thanks!
  4. I've just completed my first round of applications to a few BME/Cellular and Molecular Biology programs and am having a ton of anxiety moving forward. This past semester I managed to finish with a 3.64 semester GPA and raise my overall to a 2.95. I have a year of research experience and have presented two posters and given two presentations at two international conferences. My GRE scores are average V/Q/A 167/160/4.5. For my first round I applied only to Ph.D. programs at mid-range programs including my home institution. My undergraduate institution is notoriously difficult, and I've completed 4 years in the biomedical engineering program. I realize that it is highly unlikely that I will be accepted to Ph.D. program directly from undergrad. Moving forward I plan to apply to a number of masters programs with deadlines ranging from mid-January to the spring. My questions are 1) Does anyone have Ph.D. success stories applying directly from undergrad? 2) Does anyone have suggestions for masters programs? I am particularly interested in synthetic biology. 3) Should I look for jobs/ internships and work until the next application cycle? I'm just trying to get comfortable with my options and trying not to stress out too much. Any advice would be appreciated !
