  1. I am about ready to commit to one of the schools I have been accepted to. I am waitlisted an one program and I wanted to see if it is necessary/customary to notify a school you are waitlisted at that you will be accepting another offer? I haven't had any correspondences with this school since early Feb and I doubt I will get off the WL. I probably will notify them but I don't want to come off as too presumptuous since I am not an accepted student. Thanks.
  2. Probably just a function of being in the DC area and having lots of people with real jobs in government/policy/NGO work doing a MA in history as part of their professional training. I heard once that George Mason has graduated more people with grad degrees in history in the past decade than any other school in the country, most of those being folks doing MAs while working in DC. Perhaps Maryland is making a similar push for that market to draw in some funds which could be a good thing for PhD apps.
  3. Did anyone else here apply to the joint program in Anthropology and History at Michigan? There was one acceptance put up 3 weeks back but I haven't seen anything else. In past years it seems they have notified in late-Feb/early March and I'm wondering if anyone else on here has some more recent info?

I'm thinking that another possibility is that it is coming from the area studies center i'd be affiliated with. Do you think it would be too forward to ask if there is a connection between the reimbursement and funding since it was not mentioned in the email?

Did anyone who was accepted to Wisconsin get an email from their POC saying that they will offer a travel reimbursement for the prospective students weekend? I'm wondering if this might mean funding is on the way? Thanks

Make it 9. Never would have looked tonight if I hadn't seen this thread.
  9. Looking for some help on this as well. I've drafted pretty basic explanation of my current research and what I'm interested in looking into research wise for the PhD, but I'm not really sure how much to explain my specific interest in working with this or that professor and this or that university. There are only so many places (realistically 10, maybe 15) that have the resources to really do a worthwhile PhD in my field so its not like I can say I'm very interested in your particular program out of the 200 other places because... Additionally, with some of the faculty I am emailing I am very familiar with their work, while others are younger and haven't published a lot so I don't have much to say. In these cases my interest in the program comes from the dept/university strength in my area more so than the specific faculty member. Yes I have talked to my advisor about this, I'm just looking for some more feedback from people closer to the game while I craft these messages. How would you all suggest approaching some of these issues in my emails?
