Yay! Congratulations! You should check the excel sheet for other Sweden folks.
-
YESSSSSSSS! Well deserved! I hope you influence and make people better just like you did here! It feels great knowing fulbright is sending wonderful people!
-
lol Sorry, I got confused! But even more awesome that you are getting your masters!
-
I hope you get it! I'm glad there's a chance you can still go, despite all the international drama.
-
I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been rooting for you the whole time. You are an impressive young woman and I know you will do great things. It's amazing that as a senior you decided to apply to the prestigious award. I bet you will definitely get a research grant, if you decide to go to grad school.I hope Fulbright contacts you. It must be tough handling the situation at your workplace. I hope they have enough funding to keep you. If you happen to get a job in Texas, I have friends who need roommates I'm hoping, though, that Fulbright will contact you. Hang in there girl.

It's a small 1,500 dollar grant that will provide money for an exploratory trip. The stipulation is that you use the grant before an extended stay abroad to make contacts at archives, set up lodging, and get approval from the host country to obtain documents! Since i study Panama's military period, i could use the time to gain clearance. I feel like a sap for breaking under pressure, but life works in mysterious ways. I'm glad to have this forum! Only you guys and gals understand the back and forth drama of this process.i'm going to channel Mozartgirl and keep my head up.

Just when i think all is falling apart, i received an email this morning that i won a grant from my profession's association!!! A small but life changing grant. No matter what happens, at least we know that our applications have merit. Oh gosh i needed some good news! I hope we all survive this. I hope these moods swings don't give me whiplash

I appreciate the support. I've been working out, watching tv, binge eating at times, but that nagging feeling won't go away. I think it's because my entire department knows i applied. Everyone asks me constantly if i won the fulbright. Ugh, i wish word hadn't spread. All that pressure drives me nuts. I'm going to take everyone's advice and just channel my energy into something else. I guess i'm just having an episode because i have this irritable feeling i won't hear back until May.
-
Thanks! It feels good to know that this feeling is not failure. I'm going to just take a break from thinking about fulbright. I'm tired of it controlling my life. I started binge watching The Following, but i freaks me out that the cult leader was a professor.

I am not handling the wait well. All the uncertainty is stressing me out. I pushed back my comprehensive exams and haven't heard back from any grants. How has everyone dealt with it? I just feel like i've lost all motivation because i don't know where i will be in the next couple of months. Sorry for the negativity.

http://youtu.be/11N9ab_WjaA Jimmy Eat World-The Middle For all of us still waiting or have to find an alternative to achieve our goals! Stay strong people!

I am also referring to full research grants. I think ETA's have specific grants numbers.
-
Yes. The person is the same for both. The process is different for Central America though. Rather than award a specific number of grants to each individual country, Fulbright picks the best 26 or so from the region to select finalists. Three weeks ago I emailed her and she told me "no final decisions have been made by any countries in the region." I just assumed no news means that I shouldn't have to check my email constantly this week or the next. I wish the email would have said "soon," but I would rather them take their time than rush through the applications.

RE: Central America notifications Muendl, Susan [smuendl@iie.org] Sent: Monday, April 14, 2014 3:16 PM There are no updates at this time regarding notifications for Fulbright grants to Central America. Thank you for your patience. Best regards, Susan For anyone waiting to hear on Central American notifications. I'm going to guess we'll hear from Fulbright in May.

Does anyone have any updates on central america?

A bit off topic, but relevent to our plans to travel abroad. I am interesting in buying a laptop because mine is crap. It's so dated that a librarian asked me if my dell vostro was a prototype for laptops! Rude! Well, I'm looking into buying a quality laptop. You know, putting a mac book pro on a credit card because I'm a poor grad student. However, I'm struggling with the decision. I'm going to research in Panama for 10 months and having such an expensive laptop could be a liability. I don't want to attract attention. What do you guys and gals think? Have you worried about your laptop abroad? I found this great blog post about traveling with your laptop abroad. http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/travel/articles/traveling_with_your_laptop_computer_overseas.shtml

For the statistics page on the Fulbright website, the stats are predetermined for some countries while others are not. The predetermined number doesn't mean that they already know who will receive the award. I think some countries just have more sway than others and are designated a certain number of awards. I hope everyone is right about April 15. I just can't believe it because we received our first email later than usual. I think Fulbright has made me a cynic.

I don't know how I overlooked this important facet of applying for a research grant to Panama. Regional Program:Selection for countries in Central America and the Caribbean will be made based on the quality of the applications, rather than per-country quotas. Distribution of awards to countries in the region will vary annually according to the caliber of the applicants. In doing my half-ass math, I added up all the applicants to Central and Caribbean countries and divided them by half to determine who was recommended. After figuring out how many were roughly recommended, I calculated the number of grants awarded last yr for the region (central and caribbean) and figured 26 to 27 grants would be awarded this year. 26 or 27 winners would be half of recommended recipients for the region. So roughly 60 to 67 grants were recommended, and probably ranked, to determine who would receive one of the 27 something grants. Probably a waste of my time, but it feels good to at least figure out some formula for the grant process. Given that Central America and the Caribbean are considered a region, I now understand why they are usually the last countries notified. It must be a struggle to coordinate with so many different countries. Now back to creating finding aids at work! hissss

Her response was short. "Panama has not finalized who they will select as candidates. Thank you for your patience." That was all she wrote i expected at least some kind of indication that it may be next month, but she was very short. They. Probably get emails all the time so i'm sure they wouldn't mind another one

Tallying the numbers for all Research and ETA statistics, I think it is everyone. I emailed the rep for Latin America and she told me Panama has not finalized their choices. Yup, I bet I won't find out until late April or early May. Let's see how I can distract myself. I apoligize to all the stem program majors on the forum, but I keep having stress dreams that a project on conserving sea turtles and jaguars will beat me.

http://us.fulbrightonline.org/studyresearch-grant-application-statistics I keep posting, but it's all bugging me. Fulbright just posted the statistics for this year.

Do you know if there are different orientations for every country? I just figured they would have everyone there on the same weekend.

Research Grant for Panama. My area of study is history. I know that Central American countries are usually last on the list, but it was a weird email. The Subject line: Fulbright Pre-Departure Orientation Save-the-Date Susan Muendl [smuendl@iie.org]

I agree. It was pretty disappointing reading the email. Luckily it's not a rejection so I can still dream.

I got this email today from Fulbright. I'm trying to think it's good news, but I fear it is a notice because I won't hear until May. Did anyone else receive a simiar email? Dear Candidate: You were recently notified that you have been recommended for further consideration for a Fulbright Student Award. Congratulations on making it this far in the process. In the event that you are selected as a grantee, you will be required to attend an informative Pre-Departure Orientation in Washington, D.C. from Friday, June 27 – Sunday, June 29, 2014. This Pre-Departure Orientation will give you practical information on health and safety abroad, the administrative details of being a Fulbright recipient, and cultural and country-specific details to help you be successful in-country. It will also provide you an opportunity to build relationships with peers and meet with staff from the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the Institute of International Education (IIE), Fulbright Commissions in the region, and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Selected candidates will receive an official invitation and registration instructions later this spring. The costs associated with travel and accommodations for the length of the orientation will be covered by the U.S. Department of State. We look forward to welcoming selected candidates to the Pre-Departure Orientation in June 2014. Please know that the country selections may not be announced until mid- to late April. If it will be later than this, we will let you know. We cannot release any information about selections until we receive approvals from the country and the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA).
