Hi all,
I'm posting here on behalf of someone I know who is interested in pursuing art. Since she would be enrolling at the undergraduate level, this may be an inappropriate place to post this. But I thought the pool of people here might have the requisite knowledge since you are all probably fairly familiar with the academic art world. I also don't of know anywhere else to ask.
She is primarily interested in comics and so presumably would be looking for programs with a sequential art (or cartooning?) major. Does anyone have any suggestions for resources that would list good schools for those majors? The information I have been able to find while googling is disorganized and minimal. Does anyone have any suggestions themselves? Proximity to California is ideal but not at all necessary.
Thanks! I hope I'm not cluttering up the message board inappropriately.
School of Visual Art, NYC is supposed to be very good.

Sounds like a MFA the way you describe it.. Also, I know there are some programs in Europe but I haven't heard of any in the U.S. so, are you interested in PhD's that could potentially be offered in the U.S. or programs abroad? Given the current state of higher education in the U.S. I'm highly suspicious of PhD studio programs spreading as yet another way to fill universities' coffers.
-
Yes, that's true but an MFA may be the first time a student is able to work with a group of peers who are truly committed to what they're doing. A PhD just seems like overkill. If someone's work is going badly post-MFA I seriously doubt A PhD will fix that. It's perhaps time for reflecting on what someone's priorities are. Of course I'm only referring to studio work. For art history and other paths of research I think a PhD can absolutely be worthwhile, I just question an institution's motives for implementing such a long-term studio program (smells like money).

Do you mean a PhD in studio art or what exactly?

I didn't receive any information about funding in my acceptance email or letter. I saw that print&draw has been notified of 25% scholarship, so I'm starting to think I didn't receive anything...
However, I did receive an email last Thursday, saying that my financial aid award packet had been sent out. I'm holding out hope, however misguided. I'm sure they're just referring to an outline of the costs, but I want to believe that there will be some aid in the packet.
What department have you been admitted to, Alpha-numeric?
The Painting and Drawing Dept. I got a voicemail from a Professor this afternoon. He's supposed to call me in the morning. Hopefully that sheds some light on the funding situation.

Anyone received any funding info from SAIC yet?

Admitted to SAIC Painting today via snail mail.
-
Anyone heard from Hunter's Painting Dept?

I think they've already sent out requests for painting interviews and the wait list people are probably chosen from the pool of interviewees. Please share if you get information that contradicts this.
SAIC Painting interviews are today and tomorrow.

It is pretty crazy. Considering that sometimes waitlist decisions can happen in the summer, from app season in Dec til then - that's half a year!!
I hope you hear sooner than that! Best of luck!
I've been assured that I will know by April at the latest but even so it's pretty nerve-racking.

Waitlisted at University of Chicago. The waiting JUST WON'T STOP.

I haven't heard anything from Tyler. Checked my application status on the portal, "complete ready for review"
Yep. Me too. I was surprised to see that an email rejection was in the results page. Previous years are all snail mail.

So, I just saw that a email rejection was posted in the results page for Temple Painting. Anyone heard anything from Tyler's Painting department?

Heard from Northwestern today! Interviews on 21/22. I hope to see some of you there!
Congrats! Did Northwestern email interview invites?

yes, after purchasing a plane ticket, the free lunch will be a nice consolation.
any idea how many they interview?
I've heard they interview 30 people and take 8-10. Usually 8.
-
yep, see you there.
Cool. It sounds like all the interviewees will be there. Email even sounded like there may be a free lunch involved.
-
Congratulations all around! Great to hear responses coming in. Good Luck with the interviews.
Thanks. I was a little surprised to hear anything so soon. Apparently those early December deadline ARE good for something.

Email from University of Chicago yesterday. Invitation to critiques and an interview.
