  1. It's tough. I really love all of Wittgenstein, almost indiscriminately, but the Philosophical Investigations can't help but edge out the TLP for me. The TLP is incredible for what it is, and I find it poetic, moving, and (obviously) remarkably thoughtful and rigorous. I do lean towards thinking that his unique methodology shines best, though, in the Philosophical Investigations. But neither here nor there. I'm just glad to know my love of Wittgenstein is shared.
  2. I really dig your practical response. And, I must say, drinking actually was not the first thing that came to mind. The answers were much simpler: shout with joy, and weep bitterly, respectively. After reading this thread, though, drinking has become solidified in mind as the obvious, and surely most effective, response.
  3. Wittgenstein, yeeees. But namely later Wittgenstein, for me.
  4. Haha. And how every thread is rapidly descending into acceptance coverage...
  5. I agree with what's above. Once you have your WS and PS down, it only took me about an hour for each individual app, filling in boxes and tailoring my PS. If you get a really solid draft of the PS beforehand, it saves you a lot of time.
  6. Right now, I'm pretty much willing to sell my soul to whoever gives me the most money. But to answer your question plainly, it entirely depends on the specific department. My number one choice is a religion department, but the vast majority of the faculty are clearly influenced by continental philosophy, so it'd be a near-perfect fit. However, I've only run into philosophy programs where there's a scholar with interests in both phil. of religion and Wittgenstein. So for me it's less about department lines, and just whichever program has the best fit.
  7. I completely agree on the spreadsheet. I just had a Word document with all my info, but it worked effectively the same way. I included all the links to the applications, my different passwords for different apps, exactly what had to be included in the app, deadlines and cost of applications, along with a list of what order I intended to apply to the programs. This took time to compile, but was extremely beneficial. I didn't run into any size issues with uploading documents, but that's great info if you have that problem. My advice would be to start really early thinking about and preparing a writing sample. I waited until the last minute, just assuming I'd have a great paper saved up by then, and have had to submit some less-than-stellar work as my writing samples. I think it's now one of the weakest parts of my applications. Maybe that's common knowledge for everyone else, but I flaked in that area, and it's my biggest regret regarding applications.
  8. Am I too late to join the stats party? GPA: 3.98, 4.00 (major) GRE: 167V, 154Q, 5.5AW Interests: Philosophy of Religion, Continental Philosophy, and Wittgenstein I'm coming from a no-name private liberal arts school without even a philosophy major, so I know my chances are extremely low. While I feel good about my GRE scores, personal statement, and letters of rec, my limited exposure to philosophy means I only have a moderate writing sample, comprised of 2 solid, but shorter, papers. I'm including some major safety schools in this application round. I'm applying to MA's and PhD's in both philosophy and religious studies. Right now, I'm applying to Vanderbilt, Miami University, and UGA for philosophy. My 5 other apps are for religious studies.
  9. Waiting it out by finishing up applications to safety schools and immersing myself in my senior thesis. On the more intriguing topic of good tv shows, however, I give my hearty recommendation to Game of Thrones. Beyond that, I can't say I watch much tv, excepting the Office, which has 9 glorious, mind-numbing seasons to burn through when you've got nothing to do but wait on news from departments.
