  1. I'm only applying to USF because I work here and live in Tampa - I don't have the option of moving anywhere for school. I'm a California transplant from last year and it was a bit of a culture shock. HUMID is the one word I use to describe where I live. Still haven't gotten used to that. The USF campus is really nice, and I like the professors here. Tampa doesn't have much of its own personality, but it's what you make it. Oh, and don't plan on coming here without a car.

While the humidity may suck, the beaches are to die for! I have moved coast-to-coast quite a few times and the best beaches will always be the west coast of FL. <3

  2.

Speaking of BRAINS the walking dead is returning this SUNDAY!! I CANNOT WAIT!! and speaking of Jane Austen, I might pick up a copy of Pride and Prejudice Zombie edition in the library. OHH YEAHH!! B)

I feel like that is a great book to dive into!! I saw it at B&N and thought this is definitely a book to check out. OMG ya I am pumped for Sunday.

  3. The suspense of waiting for my favorite shows to come back is pretty close behind the suspense of waiting to hear back from grad schools. Ok not that close, but still!

Shhhhh this is a safe zone ;) Downton Abbey is a pretty awesome show. I can see why Jane Austin is quenching your thirst for the show to return :)

  4. Sooooo glad people started responding. :) I saw everyone was scoping the thread but no one was responding and I was starting to get a little disappointed.

I've never been much of a "read for fun" kind of person, but I really want to try it out again now that I have the time for it.

Awesome list! You really should now that you have the time. Our lives become so busy and it is moments like these that we should take for ourselves. Reading can be so calming and often times I get lost in the pages and stop worrying about everything else.

There is this wonderful book that I read called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time written by Mark Haddon. It was lovely whodunit book centered around a boy with Asperger's. However, it is so much more because it details her views on life and interactions with people. I really enjoyed it. Actually I think that autismadvocate would enjoy the book! Too bad I cannot tag people in posts lol.

Honestly I haven't gotten up to it but I'd read some graduate books if I could. If you look up a professor at your favorite school, I'm sure one of faculty members has written a book, why not show them your interest and read the book. THEY'RE JUST SO EXPENSIVE!!!! LOLL

I want this to be fun not put me in a coma. :P  Hehehe. Graduate books are going to have their time and place (i.e. when I am overwhelmed with clinic and coursework trying to gain some sanity and prevent unruly tears of frustration from coming to my eyes). I do, however, applaud your overeager tendency to learn. I just think there is a lot to learn from individual accounts and experiences either through fiction or non-fiction. There are so many light reading books that can give insight to the patient population that we will be working with as clinicians.

I recently read "Over My Head: A Doctor's Own Story of Head Injury from the Inside Looking Out" by Claudia L. Osborn. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about traumatic brain injury.

A friend just recommended this book. I think I am going to add it to my list.

  5. Okay, so I have a had a lot of time to sit and stress about applications and school and moving and I realized that I am putting too much time into the thoughts of grad school. I needed a break. So, I have redirected my time that I spend worrying into something more pleasurable and semi-productive: reading and, my personal guilty pleasure, video games.

Here is a list of books that I have read, currently reading, about to start reading:

    • Divergent (totally know this isn't "speechie" related - #guiltypleasure - can't wait for the movies)
    • My Stroke of Insight - Jill Bolte Taylor
    • The Diving Bell and The Butterfly - Jean-Dominique Bauby
    • The Giver (again not speechie but I loved this book in high school and wanted to re-read)
    • League of Denial - Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru (OMG if you are anything like me then you have a love/hate relationship with football, hockey, XSports, really any contact sport then this is must read - the book highlights how the NFL has failed to represent their players and give them the best chances of remaining healthy)

What about you guys? Know any good books pertaining to Speech Pathology that you think would be a good read? Or any books really?

  6. This is probably not the forum for you to ask this question as most of us are not fully licensed Speech Pathologists. However, after a quick search for "australian speech pathologist working in America" I found this: http://www.asha.org/members/international/intlfaqs/

And while I know that you said the states seem to be pretty vague, I don't know if you looked at this: http://www.asha.org/advocacy/state/

Here is one SLP forum that may be able to give you some guidance: http://www.speakingofspeech.com/

And another: http://www.indeed.com/forum/job/speech-language-pathologist.html <-- this is one of the main job posting sites for SLPs here in the states

Anyway, good luck in your search. I think it is awesome you guys are trying to make the move. I have always thought about the possibilities of working abroad!! It would be so much fun.

  7. Okay you guys are going to drown me for saying this and I want to put a disclaimer out there that I really don't have an opinion on the issue (1 - I think it's great experience for individuals but 2 - I am concerned about how the inexperience may effect some of the speech-language cases); however, on the topic of the SLP Credential Waiver there is a lot of controversy that surrounds the program here in CA. I know at SDSU we have been exposed to be both sides of the debate especially with the disbandment of many SLPA programs in the community colleges. There are some districts that will no longer higher SLPAs. ASHA has also addressed the issue on their website: http://www.asha.org/SLP/QualifiedProvidersSchoolsFAQ/ . We have met with some CSHA representatives that have some opinions on their end as well.

So I am saying this not to spark a debate but more for you all to know that there are some people out there that are not to keen about the idea. That being said, you might want to look into the idea as an option but then talk with an advisor about whether or not they think that is the best path for you to go to get your experience.

  8. I applied to Kean and responded to this question too. I totally found this SO FREAKING HARD to write and don't like this question. I like for things to be simple and straight forward and my first instinct was to relate it to Speech just like you. But I should say that I applied to Kean LAST yr and answered the same q and DID relate it to Speech and I did not get in. Now obviously I can't say thats the sole reason why I got rejected however I did hear thro a person in the the speech dept that the essay needs to be CREATIVE and really pull the audience's attention, which I heard mine did not do - and that is what they look for. Fresh and NOT boring and original. They are looking to see a different side of you. Its not meant to be a traditional personal statement for a reason. So just to throw it out there, for THIS year I did not really relate it to speech, only because it had to do directly with the moment in history I made a smallllll connection, but otherwise I chose a weird topic and  I actually feel good about it!!! I did what I could and am hoping for the best. So I say: Do it on JFK, dinosaurs or any fun topic you like. Show them a side of you that you are proud of. Stand out  :)

That is amazing advice! It sucks that you had to learn the hard way but it sounds like you only grew from the original experience. I looove that you chose a weird topic too. Good luck!

  9. I mean why don't you be genuine. To me, the question isn't a trick to speak to something speech related. It a question to see the type of person you are and how you formulate your answer. After all, this is a writing sample. Besides it will help you stand out as an applicant.

Anyway - I think if I could go back in time. I would go back to the early 1900s. I would have loved to been part of the women's suffrage movement. I consider myself a feminist now but I wonder if it only because of the luxuries that have been awarded to me because of powerful women like Susan B Anthony, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns.

In my SOP I would talk about the opportunities that these women have given and relate it to who I am today: stong, independent, educated, and here is where I would throw a little bone in to speech. Nothing too blatant but enough to remind them that I am applying to their program.

    How many words?

  10. I am a senior at Cal State Fullerton. I have a CSD GPA of 4.0, overall of 3.90, and last 60 units is 4.0. My GRE is V:156 Q:156 AW:4.0 (not great). I work as a personal assistant to an SLP that owns a multidisciplinary private practice. I also worked as an assistant to a neuropsychologist. I have worked two summers as a camp counselor and volunteer at a local rescue mission for people trying to get off the streets and beat addictions. I also tutor two girls with speech sound disorders, and work retail. Additionally,  I am part of the honors program and am completing a senior honor's project where I am creating a manual for parents on how to use board games to encourage language and pragmatic skills. I am fairly confident my letters of rec are strong. But seriously how much more experience can they expect me to have; I am only twenty two for crying out loud!!

Well good luck to everyone and can’t wait to hear everyone's results!

Good news to you, I have heard rumors that Fullerton likes to take their own students! :)  Same with individuals that come from Long Beach.

Are you sure they don't do interviews? Some might not say it is required but if you look like you have potential, but they want to know more about you they could ask for an interview. I know a friend of mine when to WashU for a visit and had a formal interview while there. On their website they recommend you visit campus, so I think they assume if you want an interview you will schedule it yourself.

Was that Washington State University or University of Washington?

That is interesting none the less. Interestingly, I will be in Washington for an completely unrelated reason but that may motivate me to stay an extra day. I just found this: http://depts.washington.edu/sphsc/sitewide/pdfs/Visit_Guidelines.pdf on their website.
