Hey i could use some advice. I was accepted into two programs--the University of South Florida and The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee--with almost identical assistanship offers. I am having a very difficult time choosing. I know at first you may be thinking "There is no decision. Florida against Wisconsin?" but there are several things I am considering. First, the cold doesn't bother me, I actually like the cold more than the heat and I sued to live in Michigan. Second, I think Wisconsin-Milwaukee is an almost perfect fit academically because my interest is in rhetoric and they have a few excellent scholars. USF only has two people in rhetoric, and the seem to be more of a critical-cultural with an emphasis on ethnography. But obviously they must have something to offer since they admitted a rhetoric guy. But Tampa seems like a much better place to spend the next four years than Milwaukee and I think I would be very happy there. What to you all think?

Hey simsim45, I do not have experience inside the actual program, however, I was just accepted into their Ph.D. program in communication. I would be happy to help on any specific questions you have on the application process. As for the GRE, I know USF leans heavily to the qualitative side of communication so I doubt that your math scores will be too important. Obviously, you don’t want to do poorly so I suggest you at least brush up and try to have an average score but they will probably be more interested in other things. Can I ask you what your specific interests are? I know USF is very strong in ethnography and autoethnography for methods but it is also a balanced program. A huge thing to look for is fit with instructors and the program. I would advise looking at the faculty page and researching to see if and who fits your interests. Hope this helps!

What would you all advise about living in graduate housing at USF? Would it be better to live in an apartment?

University of Minnesota. Thought I had a pretty good chance. The main reason I am nervous is that i intended to apply to 8 programs but one of my recommenders only sent the letters to half the schools. Most of the ones he missed were my "safer" schools. I felt like the rec's were the most stressful part of the application because it was sort of out of my control. What do you all think?
