  1. I'll be moving to Waterloo in August and I've been looking for an apartment/room on various sites (padmapper, kijiji, craigslist, UW, etc.). The thing is, most of those places are summer sublets. Does anyone know what the situation is like in August? I don't want to get a place sight unseen, but I also don't want to come to town and find that all the good/cheaper places are already taken. I'd appreciate any info you guys might have. Also, if you're looking for a quiet, tidy roommate, I'm your man! :D

  2. York, but a lot of Ontario Unis are in similar positions: Trent and McMaster off the top of my head. U of Toronto and maybe Queens are the only Ontario schools I might have applied to this season, in terms of programs, people in my field, and to possibly get adequate funding. But as I could only manage three apps, I trimmed them off my list.

York, I am told, only has one non-Canadian slot these days (not just History. other programs too), with preference given to those studying non-North American topics. Which is too bad, because my potential supervisor there would have been fab to work with.

    Yikes!

As far as slots are concerned, it seems that int'l students get only one or two in most places, if at all. I wish it were different since it would increase my chances, but I also understand that there's no way they'll give more than a fraction of available slots/funding to foreign students...

Last winter, I managed a single app (to a Canadian U that already had most of my materials, that previously had accepted me for my MA), but that didn't pan out because they have cut most of their funding to non-Canadians.

Out of interest, which university are you talking about?

  4. On the topic of international applications...Anyone else's department at UBC require them to mail printed physical copies of application documents? So frustrating and expensive (international)... all my other schools accepted digital docs.

UBC History dept. asked for physical copies of transcripts only. Luckily everything else was digital. Waterloo, on the other hand, asks for physical copies only after you're offered a place...

  5. Hi, everyone! First time poster, long time lurker here.

I'm applying to a couple of PhD programs in history and was wondering if I should mention an article which is not tied to my area(s) of interest? It's not connected to either of my previous theses or my current research interests, and I only used secondary literature (so it's sort of like a term paper), but it is my only published work to date (they explicitly asked not to list work in progress).

    What say you?
