  1. Hey Everyone, I wrote a post on applying to statistics PHD Programs. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think: http://statisticalsignal.com/?p=5
  2. Hell yeah! That's awesome you guys are both going.
  3. Hey Everyone, Would be interesting to see where people are ending up. Maybe something like the below format: 1. School Attending 2. Schools Turned Down 3. Reason for attending, advice for future students.
  4. I think you have some really good things going on (masters GPA, GRE Scores, and the Fact your MA was in specifically mathematical statistics). This should show application committees that you have the requisite mathematical ability. One thing to keep in mind: You won't get in anywhere you don't apply. I don't think it would be totally out of the question to apply to top tier schools like NC State, CMU, etc.. since they're more on the applied side. Just remember to not ONLY apply to top tier schools, be sure to apply to places you're convinced you will get into if you're end goal is to be in a PHD program next year no matter what. I think there's definitely schools that will arbitrarily cut you off based on undergrad GPA, but other schools won't and will look closer at your application, and if you can give them a good SOP, reasoning for going to grad school, and have contacted some professors ont he admissions committee, who knows. This leads to an interesting question I think: Based on this years results, which schools do we think are more based on numbers(GPA, GRE..) and which schools do we think look more for fit: My guesses: 1. (More geared toward numbers) Duke, UCLA, Columbia, Michigan.... 2. (Fit) NC State, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon....
  5. THIS SUCKS! I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING UP AT 2!
  6. Pretty much officially getting released tomorrow morning now?
  7. I think this is true, I'm pretty sure the last couple (public) schools are holding out to see if I can bring my own funding before an admissions decision is made.
  8. From the NSF GRFP thread it seems like they could be published on monday
  9. Has anyone applied for the NSF GRFP fellowship in mathematical sciences? if so, any insight?
  10. Great, well if it is something you want to pursue, then I would go for it. I just said that because you mentioned the MBA thing. You should try to enroll in a "Real Analysis" class. When I was working that was the one class my professor told me to take in a year off, and I think mathematically that's about the level you'd need to be at in statistics grad school.
  11. It does appear you should maybe re-think whether a PHD in statistics is the right decision for you. It seems your interests lie more in business, finance, and economics.
  12. I think you are saying all of the right things for sure, and will need to really sell your narrative in applying. With statistics Graduate school, it seems mathematical ability is very important, so I think your biggest obstacle would be showing admissions committees that you have the mathematical chops to do statistical research.
  13. No worries Applied Math to Stat, you made it further than most! Florida for sure now? I've emailed NC State and Columbia about status, and have heard nothing from either. UCLA said wait-list lol. I'm probably committing to CMU this weekend and will pull my name out of the other schools.
  14. All the schools who haven't said ANYTHING yet are pretty lame.
  15. Anyone have any inside info on when things are coming out? /Has anyone applied for the Mathematical Sciences portion? Thanks -L
  16. Carpediem (and others waiting on ucsb)- there was about 10 students at the open house. It's hard to say how many will commit, I would guess about 1-5. Funding doesn't seem to be a guarantee, especially in your first couple years if your a non California resident. The group of kids who attended were all pretty cool, so if they all go I'd imagine it would be a pretty fun cohort. I would not lose hope of getting an offer, as the cards are going to start to fall here once visits wind down and people start accepting/rejecting offers.
  17. yeah sure, I'm here right now at the hotel. Tomorrow is the tour of the department and I can report from there
  18. Thanks, yeah I think it would be awesome to live in Santa Barbara, probably in the top 5 nicest places to live in the world.
  19. Hey, Yes, I received an official letter from that program. I think if you haven't heard anything yet, you will still have a chance. I'd imagine you will here more next week after the open house when people start accepting/declining offers.
  20. Hello, I'm about 90% sure I'm going to accept my Carnegie Mellon offer. i just have one more visit this weekend to UCSB, then I'll probably decide last week. The only place where I would open up a lot is from NC State's waitlist, and wherever I stand with Columbia and UCLA http://www.areavibes.com/cost-of-living-calculator/pittsburgh,+pa-vs-seattle,+wa/ Here's my COL calculator comparison. Looks like I won't be taking a huge hit financially even though the stipend is less than my full time job.
  21. Has anyone been rejected from either Columbia PHD Stats or UCLA PHD Stats?
