  1. Hi, I would love to help you with your thesis. I think you are headed in the right direction, but you may want to look into the British Columbian peanut butter and jelly shortage. There are a few documents that discuss this particular issue on JSTOR. Let me know what you find and I will provide more in-depth feedback.
  2. Hello all, I was curious if anyone on this forum is attending / will be attending UMass Amherst and has heard anything regarding funding aside from the brief "in a few weeks" notice in the acceptance letter? If you have heard anything feel free to PM or reply below. Thank you!
  3. Thank you for the advice. Hopefully I worded my response correctly. I don't want to come off as greedy. Haha!
  4. Hello all, Over the past few weeks I have been receiving emails from a program attempting to persuade me to choose their school. These emails have been saying some nice things about my application materials and even mention a few of the items specifically. I am not sure if I am going to accept their offer unless I am funded, so I was wondering what type of response I should give to these emails without sounding too committed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  5. I recently received an email from the Graduate Program Director of a History program I applied to asking for a recommendation that is missing from my application. The deadline for the application is Feb. 1, but I was wondering, do I reply to the GPD and assure her that I have been in contact with the referee? Or are these mass emails? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Honestly, I believe a 4.5 is fine on the writing section. There is no need to retake the exam. Since you are applying to PhD History programs, a writing sample would alleviate any worries the admissions committee would have about your writing skills. Some history programs I applied to did not even ask me to list my writing scores and their websites stated a writing sample was a better example of the applicants skill as a writer, not some contrived essay about a silly topic.
  7. I could see how that would be an issue. Fortunately, she enjoys the 1980s verison.
  8. Here is one of the gifts I made a LOR professor (She is an American historian and enjoys My Little Pony) http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae267/js145709/FLATPONY_zpsdf1a1b57.jpg I am getting it printed at Staples for $1 and framing it, haha.
  9. Here are a few of the rental companies I recommend in Athens: Grace Rentals (properties in quiet locations around $350 a month) Magic Rentals (properities in quiet locations around $350 a month) L'heureux Properties (Diverse range of properties with varying prices) If anyone needs help finding a place to live, I have always found very affordable houses within walking distance.
  10. Hello Grad Cafe, I am new to the forum and I am looking for some insight on a problem that occured when filling out an application to a History M.A. program. I attended two insitutions for my undergraduate: a community college, where I took basic transfer courses, and a four-year insitution, where I completed my B.A.. When I was filling out the application, it asked me to provide a degree date for the community college, but I never recieved a degree at this insitution. Unfortunately, I could not continue the application until I put a date in this blank (00/00/0000 was not accepted as an answer), therefore I put 07/04/1776 as a placeholder but accidently left this information in the submitted application. Do you think this will hurt my application?
  11. Hello there, This SOP has sentences and structure lifted directly from the UC Berkley sample. I would go through and write the SOP in your own words (this is assuming you haven't submitted the statement yet). Here are a few of the most glaring examples: Your SOP: "__________ is the ideal institution at which to receive my PhD, largely because of its outstanding faculty and interdisciplinary approach to history. hile researching _____'s program, I was delighted to learn that Professors Jeffrey Wasserstrom and Emily Baum both teach at UCI. Professor Wasserstrom’s research on student movements aligns well with my interests in early twentieth century education..." Berkley Sample: "UC Berkeley's history program looms large in my mind, largely because of its outstanding faculty and interdisciplinary approach to history. I was thrilled to learn that Professors..." Your SOP: "will undoubtedly make my experience at ______ intellectually challenging and rewarding" Berkley Sample: "would make my experience at Berkeley a challenging and enjoyable one" I understand these are basic sentences, but the similarities are uncanny. If I was able to recognize plagarism this easily I guarentee admissons comittees will, too.
