  1. I'm photo, so I'm bringing a few prints of my work. I was going to try to bring some big prints, but I decided to go with size small enough so I can pass around or put up on a wall. I'm dressing pretty normal, just adding a sport coat over my jeans and t-shirt. and kick ass boots to boost my confidence. I don't think they expect us to dress up. we're artists. Should we all come with a way so we can recognize each other from thegradcafe? I think it wouldn't hurt us if we were seen talking to each other all friendly like. It would take the edge off, for me at least. I see you guys less as competition and more as potential colleagues.
  2. My first impulse was to on a sport coat over my ironic t-shirt, but I want them looking me in the face instead the the chest*, so I'm going with a blank t-shirt and hipster glasses. So look around for me, I'm the tall dude in the grey sport coat, blue t-shirt, hipster glasses, and look on my face like I'm worried that any minute they'll figure out I don't belong there and kick me out. *girls do not have this option
  3. A few us (like me) got them in the mail and email. the interview day is next thrusday for art and photo/media. Some rejections went out last week.
  4. well, good luck. I'll be keeping my eyes out for a gigantic tube when I get there! I'm not looking forward to burning all day friday traveling (6 hour flight plus 3 hour time change). Better than a red-eye, though.
  5. If I may play devil's advocado for a moment...why are you so set on brining the drawing? The email said bringing work is optional, and personally, I think they're more interested in seeing how we talk about our work at this point. I totally get why you would want to, but it sounds like this peice is huge if it's 8 feet in the shortest direction. Did you ask them if you'll be able to display it? I'm more curious because I'm wonderering how the interviews are set up..like in a classroom or office, etc. Also, see you there. I'll be getting in friday evening.
  6. When I look back at this, your question has a certain validity in terms of asking the BFAs here how long they're waited. If you have a BFA and you're going for an MFA you've always known what you wanted to do so it's a different issue for you guys. Still, I've heard some schools want you to have had at least a year off if not more. Others don't really care much. Those without BFAs have probably followed a different path and probably taken a little longer.
  7. Well, the AdComm clearly made a mistake there. For me, there's no way in hell I'll ever be going back for a BFA, but I've pretty much got a minor in Art will all the classes I've taken over the last 3 years. I read critical theory FOR FUN and know exactly what I'm doing with my work and where I'm going. And there are a lot more of us out there than you think, and some programs won't hold it against you at all if you have had the art history, have a good portfolio, have good recs and can hold your own in an interview. But some programs don't interview, and that scares me for the reason you mention above.
  8. You're making the assumption that we all have BFAs. The F is not really a requirement, nor is a the A, really. I got my BA (not in art) 8 years ago.
  9. Yes, let's keep it civil. Posting about acceptances is one thing, but a school may get really upset if people are going around saying how much money they got, especially at a UC that takes like 5 people and may only give one of them a deal like Reaceurx. They wouldn't retract the offer but her may start there with really bad rep. As we know, rep is all that matters in this business.
  10. Keeping my fingers crossed. Speaking of which, anyone know what your chances are of getting at the SMFA if you itnerview? The whole cost thing is a tough issue. I'm 32 as well. On one hand more than $50k of dept scares the hell out of me, on the other hand my girlfriend will kill me if I get accepted and don't go after all I've put her through.
  11. I got offered a post-bac there last year. I didn't turn it down because I didn't think it would help me get where I needed to go. It came down to money. I believe reputation is important so I decided to keep applying to top 30 schools. For me it wasbetter to keep working, work on my own. I would have loved to have spent a year at the SMFA. But I reapplied and I've got an interview so we'll see how that pans out.
  12. Photo, but they only take 8 for everything.
  13. UT Austin - Rejected. It was a hell of a long shot.
  14. UT Austin is 3%. I got the rejection letter today. 236 applicants for 8 spots.
  15. Since we're off topic, I can't believe I'm checking this as if someone is going to post something new. I'm working myself into levels of crazy I never thought possible; even my therapist thinks I'm nuts..
  16. That is fracked up.
  17. Anyone else get and email from RISD asking for you to submit the FAFSA by March 15th? I'm wondering if this is a good omen or not seeing as I didn't get one of these last year. (I never delete email and I checked. Yep, I'm that crazy)
  18. SAIC-Rejected. Letter in the mail today offering me a prior-degree BFA. I'm not moving to chicago for a BFA. My 1st rejection this year, my eighth overall, so it doesn't sting that much. So it goes.
  19. I just realized (becuase I was not aware of the mySAIC thing) that I input my email address wrong on SAIC's online application. I'm feeling pretty lame right about now. I corrected it and emailed them. Did you guys need an ID number to register for this thing? Also, anyone hear/not hear from photo?
  20. It does and the visits/portfolio reviews really helped me with that. Also, I didn't really do this, but it's also a good idea to email professors and departments well before application time. After the application deadlines and before the decisions though, many schools won't even talk to you.
  21. I think it would be tacky. I wouldn't help and it might hurt you to be that person.
  22. I'd love more insight on the process too, but I've had two portfolio reviews with them already so I've got a good sense for them. One was with the Grad Coordinator and the other was with a current grad student. They were both really upbeat and engaged and didn't ask tricky questions. It was a lot of "oh, well have you thought of this?" and then we'd get to talk out the idea. It really was like talking to a supportive friend. They asked a lot about background and what led to my current work, and where it's going. I started bringing in some theoretical framework, and that just seemed like the icing on the cake for them. All in all they're pretty chill and seriously smart. The thing I'm fixating on is when the letter said something to the effect of "Even though your interview will only be an hour"...An hour? Eek! I ended up googling facutly and picked out 3 who work in or around my discipline (photo). Anyway. I'll definatly see you on the 5th. If anyone's down for a pre/post game drink, PM me!
  23. Same here! So excited!
  24. I don't know how much it affects your odds, but as my girlfriend says, it's much harder to say no to someone who you've met in person. I think if anything it will decide a tie between you and another applicant.
  25. You can bring whatever you want. Most people bring a laptop with images, but many people bring a portfolio case. I do photography so I brought prints in a book. I wouldn't say that they try to 'weed you out' so much as they get a chance to meet you and they'll remember you when you apply. Most likely you'll weed them out because they either respond coldly to your work or you realize they won't mesh. It's also a chance to talk about your work. I decided not to apply to one school becuase they didn't let me talk about my work and shot down every idea I had. That's not the kind of place I want to be. I had one professor tell me to apply, and I now have an interview. People who go to these, and on visits have a much better chance. Infortunatly a lot of schools don't participate in these.
