  1. I don't know about you guys, but I blew through my trust fund in my 20s. I'm going to have to keep my day job, but I work from home, so that's possible. i'm going to have to take out private loans on top of the federal loans to pay for it since I don't have much savings and I'm still many thousands short with what they offered me. Hopefully I can get the loans without a cosigner. I could raid my 401k, but people say not to do that. I admit that i'm very lucky, but it would have been nice to be able to quit my job so I could just focus on school. And my crack about graphic designers is 'cuz they have marketable skills and can expect to make money at what they do..aside from any other bias I may have about them, some of my best friends are GDers.
  2. It seems like most uf us got the shaft...but one question: How much were you expecting to get? Many of the private art schools don't offer very many full rides. The art department has, what, about 40-50 MFAs a year if we're including graphic design (and why would we..amiright?) If they gave one full ride per concentration, and 2 half scholarships like SAIC does, most of us are gonna get less than 50%. You're lucky to get 1/3 off. So, show of hands: who was expecting to get over $10k? who was expecting a full-ride? For the record, I was realistically expecting about $10k.
  3. anyone get the big bucks? It's bad form to talk about offers at the school you're probably going to, but anyone who's not going, do tell.
  4. The thing about CalArts is that Valencia is about 30 miles from anywhere you want to be. which is fine if you have a car, but if you don't, you're not really going to ever leave Valencia. But rent in Valencia is pretty cheap. Figure $500/mo if you have roommates. Something to keep in mind...
  5. Yeah, but I need it all for my art! As for my plan: It's easy.. about .1% of us will get a tenure track faculty appointment upon graduation or representation by a major NY or LA gallery. as for the other 99.9%..who the frak knows. We could start a Ponzi scheme..we'll target some MBA students..they seem pretty gullible/greedy..
  6. I did not. They say after April 1st. I'm worried about funding. I missed their priority deadline since I thought I'd be rejected. I'm eagerly waiting to find out if I royally screwed myself with my own pessemism.
  7. yes! I posted here so someone doesn't make the same mistake. I actually assumed rejection when I didn't get an interview, so I missed the Financial Aid priority deadline! I'll be fine for loans but I'm worried about the merit scholarship...
  8. I got into Calarts w/o an interview. I was waitlisted last year..it seems they didn't need to interview me again. I'm about 90% sure I'll be going there. As soon as I get there I'm gonna give Allan Sekula a big wet kiss on his bald forehead! PM me if you're planning on going. I'm local and have a comfy couch if anyone is coming to visit!
  9. I got into Calarts! Photo. Actually got the letter in the mail on friday. I was wailtlisted last year and it seems they accepted me without an interview! It was my only applicaiton this year, (but I have a defferral at another school). I'm so excited!
  10. I interviewed there last year. The interviews are way short. like 20 minutes. they ask you the basics: talk about one of your peices and ask you a little bit about yourself. They interview about 25, about 20 will get offers the rest get waitlised. And god help you if you get Alan Sekula on your panel. That man has no joy in his heart. Good luck, but rest assured your're already on a very short list. PM me and I can give you more details, I don't want to say anything that would give me away.
  11. I got some more money out of them. I'm going to send the deposit even though i'm still a little jittery about the cost. I'll probably be trying to find a roommate for the first year. My gf will move out in my second year, assuming all goes well.
  12. That happened to me last year. I decided not to take it, sometimes I wish I had. But I reapplied this year and got into the MFA.
  13. I was prepared to take around $50k. I have some money saved. But if I'm in the lowest scholarship tier, I have no faith that I'll get the teaching and second year scholarships that I'd need to keep it under that amount. But yes, I'm prepared to borrow a lot to do this.
