  1. Did anyone say it's random? I think you're getting confused by different ways of interpreting probability, Loric. It's pretty uncontroversial that we can make reliable inferences based on past frequencies. We can then adopt subjective probabilities (credences, levels of confidence) that correspond to what we've inferred. In doing so, we needn't believe that the events we're thinking about are chancy in the way a coin flip is chancy. So we can all agree. The process isn't random in that it's not chancy. Still, we can (in principle--I'm not assuming we actually have the requisite data) base our levels of confidence that we'll get admitted on past admissions frequencies.
  2. Maybe you're being facetious, but I think it's wrong to characterize epistemology as being "fixated" on a definition problem. Lots of important epistemologists have given up on finding necessary and sufficient conditions for knowledge. Williamson (2000) is a well-known example. Also, there's lots of really interesting work going on in areas where epistemology overlaps with phil. mind (e.g. epistemic akrasia) and phil. language (e.g. contextualism vs. SSI). There's also been huge advances in "non-standard" epistemology--formal, feminist, etc.--in the last 20 years .
  3. Very tough question. To name just a few all time favorites: GEM Anscombe, Ruth Barcan Marcus, Rosalind Hursthouse, Martha Nussbaum. Amongst younger, contemporary philosophers, I really admire Jennifer Lackey and Sarah Moss.
  4. Nothing in Table's argument depends on the strongest candidates being able to identify themselves as such. I think we all appreciate the effort you put into your analysis, ianfaircloud. But Table is clearly in the right here.

  6. I just checked past grad cafe posts out of curiosity. There were more Ohio posts last year, but not more for Cincinnati. Oddly, there are very few Cincinnati posts at all. Again, I don't think we can infer much, if anything, from this though.
  7. I mentioned the Who Got In (WGI) live journal. Anyway, I'm not sure what we can reliably infer from just two (Cincin and OSU) grad cafe data points.
  8. I've noticed that there are far fewer posts on WGI this year than in years past. Perhaps that's an indication that fewer people want (or are aware that it's possible) to post results online. If that's the case, it would lend some credence to the Duke post's being legit.
  9. Seconded. It's not uncommon for acceptances to go out over the course of several days, or even weeks.
  10. Thanks. That is impressive. Bar-On and Schneider both do really cool work. I'm not familiar with the other hires, though I bet they're good too. Congrats to whoever was accepted there--sounds like a sweet offer!
  11. Who have they hired recently?
  12. What's up with the Princeton posting about an interview? Does Princeton even have a Classical Philosophy program?
  13. I wonder how much the work the adcom did between 12/17 and 1/2. I'd guess not much. So still a pretty quick turnaround time from Riverside last year.
  14. Not sure what Riverside's deadline was, but it looks like UCSD had a quick turnaround last year--about 3 weeks. I was just wondering though how much a particular year's applicant pool will effect turnaround time. Some years it may be easier to make final decisions because certain applicants stand out to most or all of the adcom's members. And so turnaround time will also depend on who's on the adcom--some groups may be more disposed to agree on which candidates are viable. My point is that I don't think we can reliably infer that Riverside (or wherever) will release decisions this week (or whenever) from the fact that they released decisions at this time last year. There are too many other factors, like applicant pool and adcom constitution (and probably more), that can slow down the process.
