Anybody obsessive enough to figure out if gradcafe users have a higher or lower awarding rate based off previous years results?
-
I am finally done with this crazy process! I hope everyone else has heard back from the rest of their schools. Here is my stats and results for the sake of future grad cafers who may be obbessive as I was about reading old forums. Undergrad University: The University of Texas, Austin Major: Civil Engineering GPA: Overall 3.79, Major 3.93 Length: 4 years Ranking: Top 15%? maybe Type of Student: Domestic, Female GRE V 166 Q 165 W 4.5 Research/Work: 1 year, undergraduate research in rainwater quality and microbe deactivation (expected publication next year) 2 years, intern/contractor, patent reviewing and drafting, focus in acoustical physics in medical equipment. (odd jobs throughout four years to pay for living expenses) Extras: 6 months abroad taking graduate level classes Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, University Scholar Undergraduate Research Fellowship Four years of university scholarships Graduating with 145 credit hours Applied to NSF GRFP Applied Programs MS/PHD Environmental Engineering Berkeley - accepted (no funding first year) UIUC - accepted (full funding) Attending Washington Seattle - accepted (full funding) UT Austin - accepted (full funding) Michigan - accepted (MS only) MIT - rejected NSF GRFP - unknown I just accepted UIUC and have officially turned down my other offers.
-
and have a bout of good luck when it comes to reviewers
-
Is NSF GRFP ever awarded on the weekend, or in other words will I or will I not be able to get a good nights sleep tomorrow?
-
I don't know if that is all of the department although I know people who already have offers for structures and environmental. I think international is just out of state 26-28K I think
-
So for Berkeley I never heard anything so I called to discuss and was told that all the funding offer were already sent out. I also received another email from a POI confirming the decision. I would just email or call though to know for sure.

Do you mean my stats? Also I applied environmental in many schools the different departments could have vastly different timelines.

Telling the truth about other offers at interview
HockeyNerd replied to HockeyNerd's topic in Waiting it Out
Thanks for the responses, i would never bring it up but it is nice to know that others have dealt with this and it did not have a major impact. I am also a terrible liar, so you know it might have been more awkward to lie anyways. -
I was obsessively checking my email and getting pretty anxious so my friends took me out to a trivia night at a local bar. They have a no phones rules, plus it started at 8 pm so I thought no way was I going to receive any word that late at night. I turned off my phone for three hours, which I am sure all of you here understand is a lifetime. For once in weeks I was completely relaxed and not thinking about graduate school. I turned my phone back on and found an acceptance that I had received less than five minutes after I shut my phone off. The universe is a funny place.

I have my final interview soon. I am very excited about the school but I would need full funding in order to attend. I already have a full funded offer (also super excited about). In my previous interviews I was asked the "do you have any other offers/are you considering any other universities". At that point I could honestly say that I had not received any offers but I was considering other universities and dropped the subject. If I was asked about funding at other universities do you think I should say the status, or just say something along the lines of "I have interviewed at other universities and am being considered for funding." (so sort of a lie). I have heard conflicting views a) if you say you are fully funded they will think you are desirable to other universities and want to fund you as well if you say you are fully funded they will assume you have another good option and will not be as interested If anyone has any experience with this, or suggestions I would love to hear.

Microbiology, there is a specific name but I forget what it is. Email, I haven't gotten on to the website yet to see if it is also updated. Anther girl in my lab got the exact same email at the same time. So maybe no response is good, since I know other people without decision yet.
-
MIT reject. Actually super ok with it. I think others were a probably a better fit. I hope other people get better results. Narrowed my decision down to two schools, one if funding doesn't go through. I feel so much more relaxed now.

"Texas kind of guy" hmmmmmm I could feel some preconceived notions in that statement. Again I would highly encourage you to visit.
-
Let me start by saying I'm not in this field and this is all general advice. I would highly recommend speaking with current graduate students to learn more about job opportunities in the area. That's going to be your most reliable source of information. Austin has been seeing a big increase in tech companies and job opportunities. The city is trying to become a new "Silicon Valley" of the south so I wouldn't worry about a drop in job availability any time soon. Of course though if there is a specific company or position you are aiming for that could play a role in your decision. Second - I wouldn't assert that SD is over all nicer. I've been to both, lived in California and Austin (which is very different than the rest of Texas). They have similar vibes but a slightly different flavor. I would personally choose Austin because of the lower cost of living (if we are just comparing cities and not programs). I think the only way you will really know is to visit and get a feeling for which program/city will suit you best. Best of luck!

I have never been more acutely aware of how much junk mail I recieve everyday. This week is endless.

Bleary, the greatest thing about moving north would be more people loving my favorite sport!
-
As in applying for masters or finishing your masters?
-
I don't think Berkeley has sent out their PhD acceptances yet! UW-Seattle has already sent out some rejections so I wouldn't count yourself out yet. Also with UW and funding I heard they basically never offer a spot without some sort of aid either in the form of RA, TA, POI research or fellowship.

Thanks! The open house is the 16-17 of March I think it a Sunday -Monday combo. I'm less keen on UCB after hearing that quite a few students drop after a year unable to find an advisor. Apparently they treat MS/PHD the same as the MSE students, have to find an advisor and fundig within the year or cannot continue.

More "trickling" out was the impression I was under.

This is my new favorite thread. I am not alone! Also boxes of cereal. I don't even need milk, seriously dry honey nut cheerios are the best.

Congrats on your first admit! UIUC is a great program.
