Got my second rejection today, from UNL. And here I had dared to hope. Now I kind of just want to cry. Their rejection letter was like a slap in the face. Basically insinuated I was too young, fresh, and artistically immature/boring for their program, and they bundled in a pamphlet for their non-degree, out of pocket "special" ceramics program as if I'm going to jump at the opportunity to relocate to Nebraska to go into debt for the grad school equivalent of Weenie Hut Jr. A huge part of the reason I want to go to grad school is to give me an opportunity to simultaneously improve my skill and situate myself so I can continue making ceramics post-grad. Without grad school, I can't do ceramics at all for the indefinite future. I don't have the resources or location for it. They're saying please continue to develop your work and maybe apply again in a couple years, but I can't develop my work any more. I'm stuck until somebody accepts me or until I win the lottery and can afford my own studio, and it's a ridiculously depressing thought.
I don't know. I don't mean to harp, I'm just. Kind of crushed, even though I tried really hard not to invest myself. But with their response, I just can't tell anymore if I'm even cut out for an MFA program, or if I'm blind to how completely mediocre and hopeless I am as an artist. Maybe they're right. I don't know. I mostly just feel like a talentless hack right now, though.
And now I'm crying. Oh god.
I agree with the idea of applying for residencies. That, or see if you can intern with someone or somewhere close to where you are. I know there are also other ways to expand your portfolio and experience in the ceramics world without a BFA. Established artists often need help with their output, especially if they create functional pieces. You should look further out and see if there is a place like that that would also offer room/boarding.

I think they are important for competitive fellowship/scholarships that could come with acceptance and I need to visit the school anyways to see if they are a good fit for me. I won't be able to travel in april when I've got to make decisions on where to go.
Yes, for making your own decision that would certainly be the best way to go about it!

Congrats lenticchie!

Me for RISD too. I'm going to end up flying nearly every thursday or friday in march.
Congrats!!! Sounds like a good place to be! Are the in person interviews necessary?

I feel for those of you who haven't heard anything thus far, but don't forget that many schools will not be making decisions until March, late March, and some won't even decide until early April. If you know that your school has already made a decision in your department (or possibly has) then try to make some contact and see what you can find out.

I meant that sculpture can encompass a lot of different things and that your work doesn't require a foundry or some other high tech capabilities. I'm not entirely sure what is going on with Yale's sculpture program, but I wouldn't concern yourself. Yale can still open a lot of doors in the art world and if you can get funding then you should probably consider going. Many people on this board would probably try to go there if they could so I wouldn't read a lot into it. I would certainly try to find out about international funding possibilities, but I wouldn't bring that up during the interview. Just talk about your work, the artists you admire, your process, and ask them questions about their program. Look at past year forums and see if you can find the answers to your questions there concerning Yale. There is a search function at the top right where you can put in Yale for all of Visual Art.

I spoke to the woman in admissions earlier this week because my transcripts never got there, and I asked about the timeline. Apparently I made it through 1 round of rejections, and Friday they had a meeting to further reduce their list. She said 20 people get interviews, and they narrow that pool down to 8, I guess because a few people will inevitably chose another school. She said something about March 5th. Is that your interview date? If not, it may be the date they let you know if you were accepted or not.
Will you do the interview in person?
It will be a Skype interview this Friday. My interviewer said that they were all meeting to present their "cases" the first week of March- after the interviews. Mine will be this Friday. He didn't offer an option of an in person interview, so I guess they are all either Skype or a phone interview. I was told it was very informal and casual and to be myself- their primary purpose for the interview is to see who will be a good fit for the program and with the other graduate students. So, I'm going to try to approach it in that manner.
And thank you for the information on the process!

Good luck! I think that the concerns with Yale sculpture may not carry over into the work that do. If you have any concerns then bring them up during your interview. Don't forget that the interview is for you as well.

I received an unofficial acceptance email from Ohio University yesterday, they said funding to follow!
Anyone else hear anything from them? or has some insight into the school?
Congrats!

Awesome! You are 1 of 20, so your chances have vastly improved.
Really? What is your source?

They sent an email this afternoon. I'm not sure it would have been a good fit for me regardless, even if they were interested. That program seems really motivated by more politically involved, community based work. I'm more interested in white walls than I am in social practice.
Looks like you made it to the next round though. Congratulations! Best of luck with the process.
You were right! I received the interview request this morning! Very excited! Thank you!

Welcome Catz4evr! Good luck!

If its by email then I suppose you may be correct. However, they seem to notify gradually so I don't know about "rounds". I'm hopeful that that is the case, though- their program is probably the best "fit" for me.

That sucks kierstin. How were you notified?

I don't expect any news for at least another week or two so I'm living vicariously through all of you
How did the IU interview go? They have a pretty solid program from what I hear and Bloomington is a beautiful town. Indianapolis provides a lot of opportunities to show as well.

Thank you! The actual program I applied to is a bit broad...Fine Arts. It's an interdisciplinary studio program.
I know someone finishing up in that program and it has done wonders for her. She is in serious debt and talked a lot about the struggles there, but is now pretty content with her decision. Good luck!

Any idea of how many people are going to get to USC and UCLA Interdisciplinary ?
USC:8?
I believe that they said during the UCLA grad information meeting that each discipline admits 2-3 people per year.
