got rejected to all my PhD schools...should i apply for master's?
MackF replied to Eileen Tran's topic in Biology
Sounds like too few schools is in fact the problem. I'd say go for the Master's and try to get into PhD programs again next year! What were the 4 schools you applied to? Maybe apply to some slightly "lower" tier schools next year? -

I interviewed at their genetics/genomics institute and haven't heard a peep -
Didn't take the subject test, HOWEVER I did use a 2012 book to study for my GRE general. I moved into a rental house at school and literally found it in one of the bedrooms. I can't imagine it has changed very much over the past year or two. If you can get a 2012/13 edition for under 5 bucks I say go for it! The test material can't possibly be that different to justify a huge price increase. Good luck, I've heard BIO GRE is a killer.

I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life, so if you have any questions about the area (should you choose PITT) feel free to shoot me a message! -
Is anyone else on here planning to attend URMC in the Fall of 2014? I'll be starting my PhD in genetics and was curious if anyone else is going to be up there doing something similar.

Don't take it too hard, you've got great offers! Their loss, for sure. -

Hey ERR_Alpha, I'd ask their department about summer funding. My program is $26.6k for each 12 month period. I know a lot of programs will tack on an additional 4 or 5 thousand for a summer of work on top of the regular stipend. I'd be nervous about not getting paid over the summer. Shoot the program coordinator/financial aid dept. an email, since you're already in its not like the can rescind your acceptance because you asked a question! -
I'd say that your credentials are really solid. However, those are all top tier programs. I'd highly consider applying to some middle tier programs as well (Vanderbilt, Purdue, Rochester, Florida, etc). Not saying that you won't get in to the ones you're looking at, but those are some of the most competitive schools in the field.

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't be looking for housing until at least this summer anyway, so I've got some time to decide. It seems like a lot of people push the Southwedge/Corn Hill neighborhoods, and the neighborhood right across from the URMC, so maybe I'll start my search there.

Just asking because I know the interview weekends were Jan 30 and this coming weekend. That's for the programs in the medical center though so im not sure about their general bio program. I applied to genetics, genomics, development -

Awesome! Such a good feeling knowing your expenses are covered. -
Physiologydude, Do you want to go on to a PhD or just a Master's? I'm graduating in May and my GPA is similar to yours (3.46). I've been accepted to one grad school and interviewed at a few others. What are your other qualifications (GRE, research experience, etc.)? I think you'd have a pretty solid chance of getting into grad school for Fall 2015 if you have solid credentials.

Did anyone else apply to UFlorida Genetics and Genomics that had an interview but didn't hear back yet? -
Well that at least gives you plenty of time. Its definitely a hard decision.
-
Well I didn't accept yet...but I'm pretty convinced I'm going to pull the trigger on University of Rochester!

I think PSU is a perfectly respectable school. If you're more inclined to sciences, don't stick yourself into a 5 year engineering ordeal that your heart won't be in.

I see. So after year 1 will they continue to give you the summer stipend or just the regular $27k? -

Offer sans funding info? That would make me hesitant. Not to say they won't send you something in the future but that is really odd. -
Going for prestige is foolish. Sure, you don't want to go to a new program that has only graduated 1 PhD student, but you've been invited to some very good schools all around. Go where you enjoy the most, and things will work out.
