  1. To be fair, there's wine in and around Geneva too! I actually stumbled across the blog of a current IHEID student describing an IHEID degustation trip to a vineyard earlier this year.. http://justrikki92.wordpress.com/ Add the following bit for the exact post! I can't seem to post the full link. 2014/02/22/organic-wine-tasting-for-a-change/
  2. I was hoping that when they said they hoped to send out all emails by Friday 14th March, that it meant there would essentially be rolling admissions from today until that date. Going by the lack of activity on this thread, however, this does not appear to be the case. I realise we here are just a small sample of all applicants, but what are the odds that they have indeed been issuing admissions and no one on this thread has received one today? Also, is anyone else deliberately attempting to ignore the implications of the qualifier "we hope to be able to"?
  3. It's remarkable how much quieter this thread has become as compared to yesterday. Looks like IHEID's email does seem to have had an effect.
  4. Seems we all had pretty much the same experience. And yep, I'm an MDEV applicant as well.
  5. Hi lyanuloluwa. Welcome to the forum! What programme did you apply to? We've heard of two responses to interdisciplinary programmes thus far: The_Freak and a friend of k_angie's, both of whom were accepted to MDEV yesterday. With regard to disciplinary programmes, there's lui_aragon (IR/PSc) and lily.sirus (LLM) who have been admitted. I'm not too sure if anyone else has. Did you also receive the email from IHEID last night regarding the admission process? It was sent around 6.30pm Swiss time.
  6. I don't know if everyone did, but certainly many of us received emails from IHEID on 23rd January with information on their student accommodation at the Edgar de Picciotto Student House as well as the application process (deadline was 19th February). According to IHEID the email was sent to everyone who applied, and has no bearing whatsoever on our odds of admission. I'd recommend checking with IHEID if you haven't heard anything about accommodation.
  7. Welcome LindenLondon! That's the first thought that crossed my mind as well, along with "what about those who have been admitted based on the online follow-up?" Did you also receive one of these emails, The_Freak? I'd be quite interested in knowing. Likewise angie - have you heard anything else from your friend who was admitted? Whether regarding this email or otherwise.
  8. The truth* is we have all already been admitted, and this is our first lesson: Module 01 - Patience, Tolerance and Understanding (60 credits). *I'm making this up
  9. I've just received the email as well. It does seem somewhat odd that they should notify some people via the online follow-up and some per email. Perhaps there's an issue with the system - it's the first year they're using this online application form, and there were a few bugs even in the early stage of filling out the form. One thing's for sure: there's no way I'll stop checking the online follow-up..
  10. Thanks. It's only 4.11pm in Switzerland! That leaves an hour or two for further nail biting today.
  11. As the mouse moves the cursor closer to "refresh" my heart ceases beating - there is silence in my chest My breath remains caught trapped between fear and elation as my eyes absorb the words "Under consideration". This is unbelievably stressful.
  12. Congratulations The_Freak! You've accomplished the dream of many who stalk the pages of this forum. Great too to know that the ball's rolling with the MDEV application process.
  13. Fellow MDev applicant here. As far as I can tell there hasn't been any movement on the Interdisciplinary front yet.
  14. If I remember correctly the past trends were that admissions to disciplinary programmes were released earlier, while applicants for interdisciplinary programmes generally had to wait a wee bit longer. Perhaps this is the case as well this year. Time will tell.
  15. May I ask when you submitted your application? I wonder if they roll out the results according to the same chronology as they received the application.
  16. Congratulations!! Thanks for the update too, it seems the trickle has begun.
  17. If IHEID monitors the number of times we visit our Application Form I'm certain I'd look like a crazy person. I must have refreshed that page at least a thousand times in the past week!
  18. For anyone else considering Hertie / Berlin: I've spoken with a friend who currently works at a think tank in Berlin, and she had this to say: About Hertie - the people there are bright and seem happy with it. There are the usual compaints that any school has about admin etc, but no education-related complaints. Expenses in Berlin - generally cheap by European standards. A room in a shared apartment can be gotten for around €400.- per month; a food budget of €200.- per month is fairly generous; there are numerous affordable ways to enjoy the city's extensive cultural offerings, e.g. with a "Classic Card" that costs just €15.- per annum and allows you to obtain cheap leftover tickets for ballets, orchestras, operas and so on. It's not an exhaustive list of pros and cons, but perhaps it helps someone with their decision. Goodness knows it's hard enough as it is.
  19. I'm afraid I don't have any experience with vegetarian food there, but I see Katrun's provided a great answer! I fully agree with your observation, Katrun: I was never much of a cook before I moved here, but the relatively cheap prices of groceries vs eating out has been quite an incentive to learn. Also, the cheese and bread here are delicious! If anyone is really worried about the cost of living and is willing to commute to classes, living in France is a viable alternative. Costs are substantially lower than living in Switzerland, and the commute may even be shorter than if you lived in Switzerland but outside Geneva city. According to the IHEID info session that Mickun posted some time ago, this arrangement is entirely possible for students. There are drawbacks of course, but I suppose these are weighed differently for each individual. 20. My input based on current prices in Switzerland and my experience here over the past 3 years: 1) A large Big Mac set costs CHF12.90 including taxes (as of 2 Fridays ago, when I last purchased one). 2) Large kebabs are around CHF9.- on average. 3) Meals at restaurants are indeed expensive, particularly when it comes to meat or seafood products. Steaks etc can easily set you back over CHF40, but a freshly made pizza and a drink is generally below CHF25. 4) Asian food in a restaurant is generally upward of CHF17. 6) Many good deals in supermarkets. For example, you can get delicious pizzas for CHF6-CHF10 that you just need to stick in an over for 18 minutes, or half a cooked chicken for CHF6.
