  1. Maybe not. In any case, I need to get back to work instead of continuing this loop of refresh, check, refresh, check....
  2. And I just checked my mail and didn't get anything. This is a little bit surprising since I live about 50 miles from NYC, but I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get the details.
  3. I just did the unforgivable: I emailed my FPA to ask if she knows anything. I'll report back when (if) she responds.
  4. Oh, ok. I thought the "we" meant the Germany applicants. I've got my money on today. In fact, I've got my money on today in the next 30 minutes. I've been perfectly cool about it until today, but now I'm anxiety eating as I wait. You Gradcafeers' anxiety is rubbing off on me!
  5. What about the document makes you think next week and not today?
  6. Do we know what time German Fulbright sends out there notices in the past? If it is from Bonn (German Fulbright office), then it would presumably earlier in the day wouldn't it? And if so, then hasn't that time passed?
  7. I just checked the portal (graduate research), and have "selection made" indicated. Are you sure that means what you say it means?!
  8. I hope that your proposals were exactly what you wrote above, caps lock and all. If I were on the committee, I'd grant you the fellowship on the spot.
  9. Well, it is very unlikely, but possible.
  10. From what I understand Fulbright is more competitive, but they are also different. Fulbright wants cultural ambassadors, so the scholarship aspect might be slightly less important, while DAAD doesn't care if you are a hermit who wants to sniff dust mites in an archive all day. Also, remember that Americans make the Fulbright finals decisions for Americans, so German topics that are close to German's hearts might not stick out to them as much.
  11. Yes - another PhD candidate in my department was offered both a couple of years ago. You have to decline one, but if it happens, it certainly is flattering.
  12. Quick clarification: this is what I was told about the Research proposals. I'm not sure if all the sub-organizations of Fulbright and DAAD do the same.
  13. More than that. I've been told (off the record) that well-rated proposals that don't make the cut for one grant often get the other. (Fulbright committee might reject your proposal, but then recommend that the DAAD committee accept it.)
  14. Yup – all signs point to yes. The DAAD and Fulbright committees correspond, so typically results from both are released around the same time. It sounds like DAAD has made their decision but are notifying via snail mail, so Fulbright might be notifying today via e-mail.
  15. Well, I just checked my mail, and neither a thin nor thick envelope was waiting. I guess this means that I hear tomorrow. Sorry you didn't get it, but there's always 1) Fulbright or 2) fully-funded PhD! A fully-funded PhD as a worst case scenario isn't so bad, eh?
  16. Not to pick the scab, but was the "rude rejection" from DAAD?
  17. I just read a report by Reuters that documents how the NSA are (still) spying on 320 German officials, and began to wonder – have there been any instances where the Fulbright Commission of a particular country shut down due to diplomatic tensions?
  18. Heidelberg, eh? Oldest university in the world, isnt it?
  19. Hi – another Germany research finalist here. The google doc shows that there are at least 7 of us participating in gradcafe, so welcome to the crowd! I'll be in either Berlin or Leipzig studying music. What is your field?
  20. Hm. We should talk. I was just recommended; also to go to Germany to do opera research. I'm looking at avant-garde opera reception (Lachenmann's and Czernowin's operas in particular) from 1997 to the present. You?
  21. I'll be based in Berlin, but affiliated with Leipzig. My research will end up taking me to most major German cities. I'm Ben, by the way. I was on the program committee at Stony Brook and we spoke briefly after your presentation. Good luck and stay in touch.
  22. Ah! Yes, I believe you do. You gave a paper on Dancourt? P.S. I too was recommended. What city will you be based in if you go?
  23. Congratulations! By the way, I'm also musicology (Stony Brook), but applying for Germany, not France. Good luck!
  24. Ha! I just finished the last piece of apple pie. I'm going to put on the "Fulbright 15."
