I'm doing an ethnography for an undergraduate course based exclusively on this thread. Reading through 5000 posts has eaten up quite a bit of time, but it's been a blast.

Summer/14 Reading/Research forum?
bhr replied to iExcelAtMicrosoftPuns's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Just show up and attend panels/workshops.Don't go to meals, but pretty much anything that isn't ticketed winds up being open access. If you don't make an ass of yourself no one will notice. (I've been told. I in no way endorse crashing conferences. It is wrong and should never happen.) -
Summer/14 Reading/Research forum?

I'm going conference-crazy this summer. Crashing one at Maryland at the end of May, then CW, then a pair in DC in June. Registration fees are for people who need nametags, academic conferences are easy to crash. -
I assume they mean Texas Woman's, which I know nothing about.

If you are in a college town check with Res Life. They usually need summer staffing, and it often comes with housing (assuming that you aren't tied to a summer lease).

I got a funded offer from Purdue out of nowhere yesterday morning. I got an email and a follow up call asking if I was still interested. -
I'm starting this coming fall. I believe Heja is as well.

Today was interesting, as two waitlists turned into funded offers. Too late to matter (and I got my top choice), but it is good for the ego. -
I was fortunate to (help) play host to CWCon this past year, and I can vouch for value of attending. While the presentations are a bit odd at times (WoW, Sparkeponies), there really was a great sense of community. The keynotes (Karl Stolley, Katie King, James Gee) were all amazing, and available to chat after they spoke. Outside events opened up opportunities for networking for grad students that other conferences may not. Plus the GRN means that grad students can get travel funds a bit easier, even if they don't get a panel. Obviously, I'm biased, but I plan to go as often as possible in the future. I've also heard good things about FemRhet and RMMLA. I think the smaller conferences, especially ones with a specific genre, create their own communities, and getting tied in to one opens up many doors.

Sent my email today, accepted an MA slot at MSU. -
I have an acceptance or two, just wasn't sure how to ask the question without looking bad.
-
It's the second semester of a one-semester class (you have to take it twice for the cert). My main concern is that my GPA is less than stellar already (<2.8), and I sold myself based on a 4.0 junior/senior GPA. Honestly, I may just be overreacting and can squeeze out a B, just trying to get a sense of things before it is too late. (The grade drop is, disgustingly, attendance based. There was some confusion about the time of an additional section I had to attend, and, two absences later, there goes a letter grade. )

So, applications are done, MA acceptances are in, and all is right with the world... Except I'm looking at a C in one of my final classes. It's the first non-A in three semesters, and it's in an elective (that gives me an extra certification). I can drop the class with a W until Tuesday, should I take the W and keep my GPA up on my final transcript or do I suck it up, take the C, and hope that it doesn't kill me when I move on to the PhD in two years.

Anyone have thoughts in ASU's new Tech Comm MS? Just was told to apply, as they have money to launch the new degree. -

A yes and a no today, and no funding still. -
I've been wondering about this a lot over the last few weeks, and am wondering if anyone else has a sense of how much the two groups overlap. I know a lot of my MA/MS programs offer well after they offered the PhD admits, and assume that the two classes have to be related in some way. Do MA admits have their own pool of funding, or do we wait to see what doesn't get used by PhDs? Same with waitlists. I'm on two, and I'm wondering if my odds are improved when folks here announce that they are turning down PhD spots.

There are now three MA responses from MTU on the board, and I've been "awaiting program decision" for two full months. I sort of want to reach out this week, since I know they are going on break next week, but am afraid how that will go over. In the meantime, I'm trying to line up alternate funding for MSU and having little success. I hope they wind up with a TA spot for me! -
Where are the MA applicants?
bhr replied to pure titanium's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
MSU, Purdue, ECU, MTU, Minnesota. I like Morgantown quite a bit, just wanted to get a little further away from home for my next stop, which eliminated WVU and Maryland. All PW or Comp/Rhet though, you couldn't pay me to do Lit for a career,I am terrified by the idea that I could eventually get tired of reading for pleasure. -

What makes you think that you didn't get into Purdue? I haven't seen or heard anything that indicates that they've done MA admits yet. -
