  1. You might still be wait-listed at UC Riverside, I don't think they've notified people about their wait-list yet. Also, congrats to the Toronto acceptances!
  2. I bet that can be tiring! FWIW, my tone in this thread is definitely tongue-in-cheek. Really, the only philosopher I could think of that I genuinely feel negatively about is still alive and very much active, so I didn't feel like it was appropriate to mention him. Instead I just picked a historical philosopher that is bottom of the list in terms of appeal. I have mad respect for Hume. Are you using philosophical standards for form/content? If so, I can see where you're coming from. If you're speaking more generally, I'm pretty baffled. Kierkegaard was a literary genius. Though I guess taste can vary quite a bit!
  3. It drives me nuts not knowing what was behind Kierkegaard's last minute rise from the bottom to the top of the list. That result surprises me a lot.
  4. I think some schools have limits for the number of times you can apply. Other than that, I don't know. The only time I ever inquired to a program whether prior rejections would hurt my chances, they told me that they wouldn't have any bearing. You might be best off asking one of the programs that requires you to state if you applied previously.
  5. No, TheVineyard, you're not supposed to agree or comply. No one is trying to convince you of anything. The downvotes were in response to a derailing the thread which involved criticizing the epistemic standards by which others choose to make decisions regarding which programs they attend. Your post, once edited, was clearly a challenge to another poster for not holding the same standards of evidence as a court of law. That is provocative and unnecessary, especially in a thread that isn't about Ludlow's guilt or innocence. EDIT: If you were genuinely looking for clarification, I apologize. The sort of question you were raising is one that is often raised in a much less innocent manner in these sorts of cases.
  6. Tell me what crowd you're hanging out with. I'll gladly swap places. In my 4 years at undergrad and 2 years at an MA, I've met only two people with any familiarity with Kierkegaard, much less esteem.
  7. If you're asking because you're genuinely curious: No. If you're asking because you're trying to imply something about the evidentiary standard Aspasia100 or anyone else should be using before they make judgments about Ludlow, let's not go down that road.
  8. I can't really think of any that I despise, but Hume gets my vote for most overrated. With Berkeley, who needs him?
  9. I think being a beast machine of any sort would qualify someone as out of the ordinary.
  10. Congratulations!
  11. Thanks! Congrats to you as well! They may very well be a coincidence. Their attitudes towards non-traditional applicants may be what was suggested to you, I remember they made initial offers to a few UWM students last year. I know in my case fit is also almost certainly a factor, Riverside is almost a perfect fit for me. Congrats to the Oregon acceptances as well as the new U Chicago and UCR acceptances!
  12. Perpetualapplicant gave some really good advice. I can confirm that because this is also my fifth round of applications and I also ended up going through an MA program, though my timeline was a little different. (Interestingly, we both have offers from Riverside)
  13. It's very likely too early to be resigning yourself to not getting in. It will still be a month before all programs have sent out their initial offers. There are plenty of programs that have yet to send any. Furthermore, not a lot of programs have begun wait-listing people yet, so on top of the large number of initial offers remaining there is also a great deal of opportunity to be waitlisted.
  14. Very cool, thanks for sharing! Hopefully everyone can take something of a day of rest tomorrow and relax a little.
  15. Congrats to MattDest and OX23!
  16. I think he meant "McGinn II" as in another scandal along the lines of the one with Colin McGinn.
  17. Congrats! Those last two are especially cool AoIs.
  18. Congrats! Wow, someone got a phone call from Wrathall yesterday? Congrats to that person as well! I wonder why the change-up in contact.
  19. One of those was my girlfriend. She got a voicemail and then an email. The email appears to give general information about funding and visiting, but does not seem to give details about her funding in particular.
  20. Holy cow, congrats to whoever got the Chicago offer. I think I'd give a limb to get in there.
  21. Awesome, thanks for letting us know. I was afraid to email the department because I didn't want to pester them about info they were probably going to send anyway but part of me wondered if an email from them somehow gone astray in my case and everyone else had gotten it, so it still worried me.
  22. My acceptance was received at 9:54 AM CST (which was 7:54 AM for the school that sent it). On the other hand, it was in the form of an email from the graduate admissions office. They probably work on a different time table than the faculty at philosophy departments.
  23. Thanks and congrats to you too! That sounds like a really sweet financial aid package!
  24. I'm sorry to hear things are so tricky with your situation! I hope things work out for both of you. Sorry to hear you haven't heard from them yet. I wouldn't read too much into that, though. When I saw (and panicked) that my transcripts hadn't arrived yet I didn't get much communication and it took them a while to update my records as well. I suspect they were just very busy. Also, to anyone else who got an offer from UC R: did you get an email from the philosophy department or just the graduate school? So far I've only received an email from the graduate school.
  25. She sends her thanks. It could've been quite a curse, but we both got offers so early and now we have offers near each other so there's very little to worry about. At least until she gets an offer from Yale or something and I'm stuck in on the other side of the continent. There are so many posts going up on gradcafe so: congratulations to all the people getting offers.
