  1. Yes! It doesn't help that everyone is counting on me because I'll be the first student from my university to ever receive a research/study grant to the UK if I am successful....
  2. Really? I haven't received anything from Michigan. I would think that they send admission results out en masse because they so not do rolling admissions and are required to offer funding to all admitted students. I did not apply to mit.
  3. This is what my recommendation email said " Please arrange to have one official transcript from your current academic institution (if enrolled) and one transcript for all other institutions from which you received a Bachelor’s or Master’s or doctoral degree. See the website listed above for further information. Send transcripts to: " I only sent them my degree granting institution. However, my study abroad grades are reflected as transfer credits on my degree transcript.
  4. Anything to do with the romans, also America in the colonial/revolution times. Ancient greece. Native American civilizations.
  5. Everyone on the internet is INTJ.
  6. I am wanting to travel after graduation but sadly none of my friends are graduating with me and they aren't the types to want to travel even if they were. I am thinking costa rica, or somewhere in Europe. I speak Spanish but I want to experience a new culture as well. Maybe scandanavia. Or maybe one of those English teaching gigs, but it has nothing to do with my field because I'm going into an engineering phd.
  7. Just received my admission to the University of Washington! Visit day is March 7th. ^^and no I am still waiting on decisions from michigan aerospace AND nuclear depts.
  8. Got gatech acceptance today.
  9. I am a UK finalist and I received my interview invite on Wednesday the 12th of Feb. I am applying for a post grad partnership. What grant are you applying for? If it is a partnership it could be that they only do interviews for certain universities. There were some universities on the list last year that only got numbers of applicants in the single digits. It could be that they don't need to interview for those. Also, check with them to make sure they have the right email address on file. I don't want to give you false hope, just suggestions but really we know as much as you do.
  10. Umich is required to offer funding to all PhD students. I applied to the nuclear dept. there and they said that is why they are so slow. They do not do rolling admissions, they wait until all are submitted and evaluate each of them.
  11. UK interview on the 26th YYEEEHHAAAAWW
  12. I was wondering, say I finish my PhD and I want to continue on to a postdoc. If I want to travel and see the world while still advancing my career, how would american universities view a postdoc from another country if I come back to apply for tenure track, or research positions in labs?
  13. Wow, where did you hear the number of applications? And no, I won't go to Michigan without funding. It is out-of-state tuition, so a master's degree would probably cost $80,000. not acceptable, haha. I would go to wisconsin if that happened. I have also applied for a fulbright fellowship, so I will choose that over anything else if they accept me.
  14. I am still waiting on Michigan as well, they are going exceptionally slow. Wisconsin got back to me within 3 weeks of submitting the app. I will go to Michigan if accepted, otherwise its Wisconsin for me. I too interviewed with Berkeley and I visited there last year under the Edge program, but they do not have enough opportunities in plasma physics for me. BTW, I am a mathematics major w/ 3.85/4.0 GPA. V/Q/W = 158/164/5.5 . I worked in a plasma physics lab last summer, but did not publish anything. Have several research presentations in computational mathematics and plasma physics. I am wanting to do plasma physics in graduate school as well, hopefully either fusion or electric propulsion related work. PRefer experimental work but theory is fine as well.

    Ann Arbor, MI

Anyone have experience buying a home in Ann arbor? I am from the south and I am interested in living in a quieter setting outside the city limits. Is this feasible? Is it possible to drive to campus in the winter or will I be snowed in?
  16. Do you guys know if the US-UK University Partnership grants for master's degrees are evaluated differently than regular fulbright study/research grants? Reason I ask is because i only applied for a master's degree through the partnership and I don't actually have a "research" project in mind, although the master's includes a final project in the summer that is to be determined. Everybody keeps talking about "project this, project that," but my project is just to go and get a master's degree and somehow I got recommended.
  17. Got admitted to RPI in NY and Wisconsin-Madison so far.
  18. I have never pulled one and I have a 3.85 gpa in my math major. Lack of sleep causes me to lose focus and I might as well be sleeping for how little I can do while sleepy. I just make sure I get some sleep and if I have a lot to do I wake up early to do it.
  19. That is good to know. I already am doing the same (i.e. working weekends and nights) during undergrad as a student government senator plus my classes, etc. Do you think you could be president?
  20. But does your Student Gov time cut into your research/coursework/affect grades? Do you think you could do the job of President and still be able to make it through your research and coursework as a graduate chemistry student?
  21. In the US the PhD program includes a "de facto" master's degree. You take master's level courses for the first two years then you do your research for ~2-4 years. That is why you can go straight to a PhD from a bachelors. in the UK master's is 2 years, and you must do it before going to PhD.
  22. Hi Everyone! This is a question for anyone who is currently in or has completed graduate school, especially if you did Student Government in undergrad or grad. I am going into a PhD program in engineering next fall. I served in my undergrad school's student government association, and I really enjoyed the experience and would like to continue doing it in graduate school. I started late in my undergrad, but I would like to continue and reach higher positions than just Senator. Possibly even President? I wanted to ask if you all think this is possible, time-wise? Especially for STEM fields, how much extra time does one have for extracurriculars like Student Government? Are any of you in grad school and doing student government? Thanks.
  23. Is anyone else here in STEM fields? Do you think it would be crazy to turn down a Fulbright for a top grad school offer?
  24. Undergrad Institution: Unknown state liberal arts university Major(s): Mathematics Minor(s): Applied Mathematics GPA in Major: idk Overall GPA: 3.85 Length of Degree: graduated in 5 years due to switching from economics. Position in Class: Probably top 10% in my major. Type of Student: White/Native American male GRE Scores: Q: 164 (89%) V: 158 (79%) W: 5.5 (97% - wtf?) Research Experience: I spent last summer at the university of michigan nuclear engineering department doing plasma physics. It wasn't publishable, but I learned a lot of practical stuff I don't get in my math major. Decided I definitely want to do plasma physics research in grad school. I also am currently doing a Computational Queueing Theory project at my home institution which I have presented at two conferences and may result in a paper. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: "Recommended Candidate" for fulbright grant. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA in Physics Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: I am a Senator for the College of Sci and Math at my school's Student Government. Applying for [ MS ] or [ PhD ] at: University of Michigan, Nuclear Eng - Applied University of Michigan - Aerospace Eng. - Applied University of California, Berkeley - Nuclear Eng. - interviewed, still waiting. They also flew me out there last year under the Berkeley Edge program. University of Tennessee Knoxville - Nuclear Eng. - Applied University of Washington - Aerospace Eng. - Applied Georgia Tech - Nuclear Eng. - Applied Texas A and M - Nuclear - Applied (but my app may be screwed up because of their stupid system that I am not sure whether they sent my recommenders emails or not, so sick of dealing with it it is what it is) Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute - Nuclear Eng. - Accepted! Financial details will be sent at a later date. United States Fulbright US Student Research Grant to the University of York in York, England for MSc. in Fusion Energy/Plasma Physics - "Recommended Candidate." Now I have to interview :/.
  25. I applied to Umich and UWashington and have heard nilch from either of them :/.
