I can second the verdict for WashU. Some professors jokingly said that they didn't have to be nice to me because I already accepted but then were super nice to me. How can you beat that!

I have an exact date that I'm leaving: July 20th. I want to have at least a month to settle in and whatnot. I've been working two jobs since January, so I'll have a decent amount of money saved.

I'm just doing a lot of reading on 1) topics I plan on looking into in grad school and 2) work by professors I currently see myself working with. I'm doing this in a fairly freewheeling way because I probably won't have much time for that once I get into the nitty gritty of research.

To clarify, I will definitely be visiting; I was just wondering whether or not I should accept now or later.

WashU is flying me out to visit on the 20th, but I have already decided that I will be accepting their offer. Would it be appropriate to accept their offer before visiting? I was genuinely waiting for other offers when I said I would visit, but I don't want them to feel like they wasted a plane ticket on someone who has already decided to go there. Are any of these concerns reasonable?

Any word on Rutgers rejections or are they pulling a UCSD?

One thing I learned when applying was how remarkably different each school's application procedures were. For whatever reason, I assumed that these procedures would be largely the same; what a foolish mistake! Some schools required official transcripts while others did not. One school (GSU) would not accept official transcripts sent directly from the schools, requiring me to have transcripts sent to me for me to bundle and then send to GSU. UWM required letters of rec to be mailed by my professors. Some schools required me to mail my writing sample and statement of purpose. Some schools required that I send documents to both the philosophy department and the graduate school. One school (UMSL) had an incredibly short (150 words!) maximum word count for statements of purpose. In short, don't be a dumb like me and assume that application procedures are homogenous. Also, applying to grad school is very expensive. I applied to 9 schools (which is fairly low compared to others on here), and between application fees, GRE fees, and official transcript fees, I probably spent around $1,000, so save up!

I don't want to sound like a philistine, but why do (some) graduate schools in philosophy offer so much financial aid to students? I can understand that law and medical students will be better positioned (hopefully) to pay off their enormous loans after school where as philosophy students won't be, but why would universities care about that? Is it purely for the value placed in having well-trained philosophers or do these grad schools get something out of having more students?

For what it is worth, I got into WashU despite taking more than 9 years to get my BA, including several semesters of W's and an overall GPA of 3.7.

There should be more jumping.

I was accepted to PNP at WashU.

I just got an acceptance to WashU's PNP program. I was literally jumping for joy!
