  1. I don't know much about OU's speech program, but I do know Athens well. My brother went there for his undergrad degree, and I almost went there (ended up going somewhere else - I grew up in his shadow and he had quite the reputation there lol). Athens is a really fun college town. It would definitely be a culture shock, but I think you'd still enjoy it. Their main little strip (Court St) has a ton of bars (OU kids LOVE to party) and fun restaurants and shops. The closest city is probably Columbus, OH. I really do love Athens and I think I really would have been happy there, and I'm from a suburb just outside of a large city. It is in the middle of nowhere, but it kind of creates it's own kind of community.
  2. Last year when I was cutting myself off from starbucks, I used my work's communal Keurig. Sometimes my boss would even buy enough kcups to last everyone a whole week! But just stashing enough kcups for a few days in my backpack and making sure I had my thermos was all I needed for my morning gold. My mom was at a flea market a few weeks ago and came home with a mr. coffee that's keurig compatible! The man told her it was never used and even gave her the warranty information. I was skeptical, and when I opened the box and saw the free kcups missing, she tried to defend him saying that maybe he took them because they weren't fresh anymore. She has a keurig, she knows kcups don't go bad that quickly! hahaha. Then I opened the liquid catcher on the bottom, and what did you know! There was stain and splatter from old coffee! The machine works fine and we got it for about 75% off, so no one's complaining. I just can't believe that she STILL believes these people with all of these amazing deals at flea markets! But I'm excited to be able to brew at home in the mornings.
  3. @emipoo Absolutely! I was one of two girls in my program who made it into the volunteer program. The other girl actually lived in Chicago, so it was really just like a little weekend excursion home for her! I believe she and a group of girls who decided to pay and go anyways all carpooled to the convention and split a hotel room, so definitely ask your classmates to see if they're interested in going! That could help with expenses!
  4. I actually did it in Chicago this past year! It's definitely an amazing experience. If you have the means to be able to go, I'd definitely do it! I was fortunate enough to live close enough to drive and have a friend who attended Northwestern University, so I stayed with her for lodging. You volunteer for one full day (it's pretty exhausting, can't lie) but then you get to attend the convention for the rest of the weekend for free! I sat in on so many great panels and speakers, met so many great people, and you get SO MUCH FREE STUFF! I came home with about 5 giant totes full of toys, games, pamphlets, etc. I might even try to apply again this year! They definitely prefer grad students, but I still got in as an undergrad! There are a lot of different jobs. I was in charge of 5 panel rooms, and essentially had to make sure that the rooms didn't get full, then have to make sure no one snuck in if they were full (I learned the fast way that many people don't get in to the panels that they want to - get there at least 20 minutes early!). I even got my own walkie talkie! Other people gave directions and were placed at various places throughout the convention. Others were placed at information booths. My job was pretty easy, since it was about 30 minutes of pure chaos, then about 45 minutes of getting to lounge on couches outside the panel rooms. You're given a (pretty hideous) yellow ASHA shirt to mark you as a volunteer that you have to wear on the day of your shift, and you're given a small lunch break. Bring your own food, one because you don't get free lunch besides some lemonade and cookies in the volunteer lounge and the food is BEYOND expensive, and two, it's so crowded that you won't have time to get your food. I actually talked to the woman who made the decisions on who got picked to volunteer. First of all, on the section where it says what days you can attend, click all days. She said anyone who didn't click every single day was immediately cut. Even if you can't, pick all days and if you're assigned a day that doesn't work for you, you can switch either when you get there or tell them in advanced that it won't work for you. They might cut you then, but it's definitely worth a shot. Basically, be as flexible as you possibly can. Even if you get accepted and in the end can't attend because of conflicts, at least try! I told them I could arrive Wednesday, even though I definitely couldn't, but luckily my assignment said that I didn't have to arrive until Thursday evening! She said location was an extremely small factor, so if you live far away, still try! I met students from Iowa and Georgia while I volunteered. Your essay is the final determining factor, so make it count! I wrote about why going to ASHA would help me become a better SLP and how much I looked forward to gaining inspiration from the convention. Somehow my cheesy essay worked! If y'all have any other questions just shoot them my way! Best of luck to all!
  5. Radford called me today and offered me a spot, even though they already denied me. I think radford has a better program compared to the school I was planning on going to...will have to ponder this while I zone out during commencement tomorrow!
  6. Has anyone heard anything since the 31st? I'm getting antsy...
  7. Do any of y'all know much about their program? I know they're a good school in general, but I don't really know anything about what they have to offer.
  8. Thank you so much! Means a lot. I definitely think you'll experience culture shock, but I looooove Louisiana. Everyone is so nice and so laid back. My parents actually moved from New Orleans to Boston and my mom became so stressed with the massive change in just people! Also, can't beat the food.
  9. I actually visited the program in the spring of my junior year. The faculty were so nice and accommodating. They asked me what my interests were, and when I told them TBI and aphasia, they immediately invited me to go and observe a student clinician and her aphasic client. I just really liked the atmosphere and what they had to offer. It felt like a great fit. They have so many opportunities and options! Also my family is in Baton Rouge and it would just be really convenient to live there.
  10. Yeah the only reason why I'm waiting to contact is because I go to school in the Midwest and I usually get mail anywhere up to a week later than everyone else. Maybe they're sending another wave on the first?
  11. I know some acceptances have gone out...still haven't received mine. Has anyone else gotten their decision yet? Anyone know when we'll all be notified? Seems so late this year.
  12. Mine still says that it's still only submitted...I guess no news is good news? Hopefully?
  13. Hopefully good news! Just wish we could get our notifications! Do you remember those links being there before?
  14. My poor signature is a sea of red! Haha I'll just be happy when this whole process is over!
  15. It's hard applying to schools on the other side of the country when they only notify by postal mail...I'm seeing all of these people get their decisions, and I have to wait an extra few days to get the letter in the mail! The anticipation is awful!
  16. Most of mine are in the south! Hoping to hear from more soon.
  17. My first notification was into my safety, which is great! But I really don't know anything about the program. After that, 3 rejections, and I'm starting to wonder if I'll get in anywhere else. my stats aren't the best, but I'm really hoping that some of my other schools will send me some hope <3 been praying a lot lately, and I never do that!
  18. Has anyone heard from LSU Baton Rouge about anything? I saw in the results page someone said that they were meeting to send out letters today. Any truth to this? This is my top school!! I noticed on the email that our paws information came on said that housing, financial stuff, and scheduling should pop up as options on our pages once we're accepted. They're on mine, but with limited access and I don't remember if they were there before. When can this be over??? Hahaha I'm killing myself with anxiety!
  19. Ugh so anxious! My portal still isn't updated!
  20. Haha true, but I definitely have other schools that I'd prefer to attend. I'm definitely extremely grateful that I at least got into one school! I'm going somewhere! haha
