I actually might do souvenirs from all the colleges I took classes at for my undergrad... My school is part of a Five College Consortium, and I took Russian at Amherst and Smith college.
I kind of just want an excuse to get their shirts anyway. Amherst, MA is the only Amherst I know of that specifically does not pronounce the "h", so there's a shirt I want that says "Am'erst College", hehe. And then if I get the shirt with "SMITH" in giant letters, I can wear an open hoodie and it just looks like "MIT". It took me forever to figure out why Smithies were so obsessed with MIT! XD

By the way: there is a DerpTastic and a PHDerp. Both users are from the East Coast and both have similar fishy avatars.
Are ya'll related?
Nope! I didn't know DerpTastic was from the east coast, either.
I chose this user name after seeing something cute, I think it was "PhDreams", so I decided to do a similar kind of thing, only sillier. Then I saw that a magikarp was already taken as an avatar, so I playfully one-upped it.
I'm just unoriginal. x)

One of my friends in a master's program just got a job at a nearby research lab that stems off of a different school. She's getting paid to do work that will be able to contribute to her final master's project anyway (yes, she's had this approved by both the employer and the school she attends). So maybe check out nearby paid research opportunities! The odds are one in a million, I'm sure. And my friend is in the Boston area, so there are quite a few research facilities around. But you never know!

Hey PhDerp could you share what safety school(s) did reject you? It's okay if you don't feel comfortable telling ^.^
It's UMass Amherst (the MS/PhD program). I do software engineering there, and I could've gotten in if I applied for that kind of research, but I want to do AI... So my advisor couldn't vouch for me.
It was my only safety school because I already qualified for a master's fellowship there and was guaranteed in on that. I didn't expect to get into a PhD program until after I finished my master's, so I was pleasantly surprised to have gotten in anywhere!
-
How are you eating vegan but eating lean meat?
It says "a lot of salad, vegan, and lean meat". As in these separate things.
-
Yup! I got into a top program and was rejected by my safety school. Though I found out I could've gotten in by applying under my current advisor (it's my undergrad institution), then I could have switched advisors once I was in. But I thought that would be dishonest.

Oh, you've come out of your hole.
I don't know what you mean?
I have a lot of math, CS, and linguistics terminology to post on this once I get to a real keyboard!
-
I was inspired by DigDeep's post but didn't want to hijack a different thread. So you can thank for this one!
What are your favorite tattoos that people have gotten based on something academic?
My favorite is a wug tattoo on a linguist I know. They're pretty popular, and very cute! It's a nice tattoo for meeting people who get what it is, if you expose it, and a neat little conversation piece.

Chewing with my mouth open. A few people I know swear by it for flavor. The noise is so disgusting to me, even when I'm the one doing it!
There's someone doing that behind me on the bus right now and I don't have headphones. First world problems...

I got a small souvenir from the campus bookstore from many of the places I visited in the process of making a decision. Most of the programs also gave all visiting students something too. My "loot" includes a coffee mug, a t-shirt, and some simulated Mars dust (my favourite!).
That's wicked cute! I love the dust.
The only school I visited gave us a college shirt, a thermos, and a bag to hold it. They also kept trying to get us drunk. I said yes to them. ;p

So I'm a what-bag?
You're setting yourself up there... XD

In one of my departments the master's students are a mish-mosh; some refer to professors as "Prof X" and others use "John."

You can make it clear you did an on-campus master's when you write up your resume if you think it's going to matter. I think prospective employers will understand why you want to specify.

This is starting to feel like a "personals" page.

University Of Oxdord
Archaeology (DPhil), PhD (F14)
Accepted via E-mail on 20 Mar 2014
Gets in to Oxford.....
misspells Oxford.
Nono, Oxdord is their American sister school. A+ for this grad-to-be!

Why wait for replies?
I must choose eventually,
And I choose this school.
Still, my advisor
Says to wait until I know!
What then, once I know?
Can UCSD
Provide an offer that will
Sway me at this point?

So, you're one of those self-hating suns.

Very specifically the warm climate thing. I got accepted at a great school, but I am already dreading the idea of 4+ more years of real, cold winter. Super frustrated with myself that I didn't consider a particular alternative in my field that would have allowed me to apply to a lot more warm weather schools.
I hope those places are hiring in 5 years when I'm done!
I agree! Aiming for a job in San Diego for the long term.

The trend of this thread: "Oh no, I should've applied to mo-what? I'm in? ha! I was right all along." XD
-
Wow, I have been accepted to Oxford's pure maths and CS course. I am already dreading the tough decision I will have to make..
Congratulations!!! That sounds like an amazing problem, lol!

What are your favorite words that people misinterpret because it means something specific in your field, or in that context?
Here are some of my (recent) favorites:
- When I say I'm taking an algebra course to my friends outside my major, they think I mean high-school level algebra. I'm taking abstract algebra. It's not the same.
- I mentioned needing to take an architecture course for a breadth requirement to my mom. She was like, "What? You'll be designing buildings?" The course is systems architecture; it's a computer science / electrical engineering course!
- I've been in classes where we use the word "function" to mean three different things in the same lecture. One was about functions in coding, one was about mathematical functions, and one was just the classic english word that essentially means "how something operates". I call this a "bucket word ambiguity", though there's probably an actual term for it.

- My partner is like another member of the cohort. While he doesn't come to all of our social events, he comes to many, so he has a sense of my work environment and cohort. He's made buddies with some of the other partners of my cohort.
You just inspired me! I am so setting up my SO on play-dates with my peers'. :3

I'm kidding. Best of luck, I hope it works out. I agree with Munashi.
