  1. Physical geography and vegetation responses to climate change. Want to end up doing climate change adaptation and using land management tactics to preserve flora, fauna and humans. I have connections to do all of this research within Bhutan. So I maybe switching to a PhD especially if I have a fellowship.
  2. I just got notified that I have been put up for fellowship candidacy. They will have the fellowship decision soon but in the meantime they have offered me a TA with a tuition waver + stipend. Looks like I am headed to Penn State!
  3. Where did you hear about this movement at Penn state from?
  4. The email directed me to the applyweb site. They posted a PDF of the notice after logging in.
  5. Email directing me to check the website. I'm shocked but in the end I have already decided on a different school because it was a better fit. Maybe they figured out that the program wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I have a few other ideas of why but its not really important as I would have said no anyways. Have you still not heard?
  6. Rejected from UM, bit of a surprise but such is life.
  7. Last I heard was that the department has forwarded decisions to the grad school about a week ago. The delay is from the actual grad school and not the department. I was hoping to have a response by last friday. No news since then but I am pretty much decided on Penn state even with a decision from UM so I haven't dug further.
  8. Appreciate the vote of confidence. Without funding from Penn state I am 50-50 between Penn and UW.
  9. Congrats! Hope funding comes through for you on UW-M and UNCG
  10. I'm currently in Bhutan and one of the forestry Chiefs (Department of Forestry) went to UM for forest fire management whom I have developed a friendship with. UM is basically the USFS's head of forest fire research, money flows there for fire. It seems to be a consensus between Private industry friends and my past professors that the program at UM is timber and fire vs UW (better for natural science) and Penn State (I applied to the geography M.S. but most likely my choice as I want to pursue conservation within land trusts). I also got a chance to meet with one of the senior professors at UM when he visited Bhutan and chatted about my goals and the program. That said, if you want a chance to visit Bhutan, UM has one of the best connections within the country. Yale is the other major school here. I've heard that the department has forwarded decisions as of Tuesday to the graduate school for notification via electronic system. (I'm still waiting though) And waiting to see if I get off of the waitlist for funding at Penn State. Application season is far from done. Congrats on UBC, I wish I had some information about that school for you, but I didn't look into it. Best of luck!
  11. If you are interested in timber management or forest fire management it is a fantastic program. If you are interest in natural resources there are other programs that are better choices.
  12. The best answer I got regarding Penn State U funding from my Point of Contact: The wait list is a selective group but it is hard for me to get a sense what the chances are that you will get funding. He said he would be asking around the campus a bit more when he returns to campus. Hope to find out more information soon.
  13. Penn State! Although with the sequester hitting I'm sure everyone is experiencing funding issues.
  14. Any word on PSU funding? I know the email said that it is based on either turn-downs or grants being funded but am curious if you have heard any more recent news.
  15. Just received an unofficial acceptance from PSU. They will not update my status to program offer as they want to give funding to all students for admission. Therefore I am admitted but on a wait list for funding.
  16. First response: University of Washington MS in the School of Environment and Forest Sciences acceptance via email, funding to come later
  17. Waiting on M.F.S. Still haven't heard from any schools.
  18. Undergrad and Gradute Institution: Willamette University Major_Gradute: Environmental Science GPA in Major: 3.3 Major_Gradute: Political Science GPA in Major: 3.35 Position in Class: Unknown Type of Student: USA GRE Scores revised version: Q: 161 (81%) V: 163 (91%) W: 4.5 (78%) Research Experience: Two Theses written while at Willamette Undergrad. Politics thesis: Why the Human right to a clean environment deserves protection in the US constitution. Environmental Science thesis: Using Lidar to Measure Biomass of Zena Forest at Willamette University. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Currently interning at the National Environment Commission of Bhutan (9 months total) I'm applying to Masters Applying to Where: Yale: MFS (Masters of Forestry Sciences) Penn State: Masters of Science in Geography University of Washington: Masters of Forestry University of Montana: Masters of Science in Forestry I have made contact with all of the schools, Yale and Montana have very close relations with the country of Bhutan and have spoke to them about the possibility of research within the country (to turn into a masters thesis). Both schools have close contact to the head of the Department of Forestry who wrote introduction email for me. Contact studied at UM, head of department came to Bhutan and we had an informal dinner here. I have had multiple email conversations with professors at Yale. Penn state contacted through mutual friend who worked under the professor. Contact does work in bio geography in south-east asia. University of Washington contacted through Department of Forestry (Bhutan) but response came about 2 months later (Was a very positive response). Opinions? Yale is unnerving, especially as they highly recommend 2 biology classes in undergrad but I completed my degree with only one course. All other recommended courses were fulfilled.
