  1. 2520 is slang, not a slur. The fact that you are comparing a WOC calling someone "whitey" to white supremacy or nazis, what?
  2. That is really nice, it seems like many rejection emails are form and not really informative. I'm sorry to hear you didn't get in, but know you'll end up at the program that's best for you! I haven't heard either way yet, but assume I probably have a rejection coming through the mail. I am so antsy because I want to just accept the offer at the school I really want to end up at, but am waiting to hear from my last two schools, both which seem to have much later responses.
  3. Me too. What an interesting way to send notification.
  4. I am incredibly skeptical of cis men in my women's studies courses, but have been won over by some. Same as 2520s in Africa American studies, or any other person who is part of the supremacy entering into subjugated spaces. Talking about masculinism as if it were equatable to feminism is how you'll get some side-eye though. That shows you don't have a true understanding of the patriarchy or oppression, and also that you're stuck in a gender dichotomy. Understand your privileges (esp. when it comes to dominating classroom discussions) and make sure you know what your endgame really is in taking the course. Susan Bordo does some work on critical masculinities, and may be a great starting place for allies.

    Summer Plans

Is anyone else moving to a completely different area, and are uncertain of what to do over the summer? I am graduating from a Masters program in May, and my PhD program doesn't start until August. Most fellowships/paid internships either start earlier or end later than would work, and I am unsure if I will stick around the town I graduated from, move to the new place, return to my home city, or try something new for the summer. Is anyone else in a similar position?
  6. I know I asked this before, but checking in again: anyone hear anything from Washington? It's been forever (much much longer than they said) since the interview, and I am nervous to just call and inquire.
  7. Still waiting on a school w/ a December 1st app due date... and was told it'd be another half month. I'm grateful the applications receive such consideration, but also -- !!
  8. UBC said about a week ago that they wouldn't be notifying people for another three weeks.
  9. People who had interviewed with UW: Have you heard anything yet?
  10. Idk, like write a wikipedia article about it? But try to use less problematic language, and also back up your claims (in what field do you believe people aren't reading Marx? Even some STEM programs think of it as canon.) That critique aside: comp lit, comparative human development, interdisciplinary anthro, LIS/museum studies with a focus on archives, middle eastern studies, and critical theory (to name few) have scholars working on what you're talking about. If you're struggling to find specific programs or faculty, search professor interests rather than schools or degrees.
  11. Not sure what your program is, but I emailed asking when they would start notifying and heard it would be at least three weeks.
  12. I interviewed with UW but haven't heard anything yet. I think they told me we'd be notified within ten days?
  13. Honestly they'll usually tell you what they liked/what stood out about your application. If they don't, perhaps frame it more broadly as "what do you look for in applicants" or "what do you feel makes a successful student".
  14. It's an interdisciplinary program at a Canadian university. I feel like I won't know where I want/don't want to go until I hear back from everyone; I really only applied to schools I was into going to. I think I'll contact Monday maybe -- thanks for the advice!
  15. I still haven't heard anything from one of my earliest applications (due Dec. 1st), and I am just realizing that they never gave me a timeline for when I would hear (more programs said by March.) I haven't seen anyone else post decisions on here, but it's also a small program. Since I've already gotten into several programs, I would like to start to let the schools I will not be attending know so that others on the waitlist can snag my spaces. I am not worried about waiting if it's going to be a longer time until I hear back, but I would just like to know the general timeframe so I can think more critically about if I would choose x over y, et cetera. Do you think I could email and ask when applicants will hear back, or would that seem like I was pressing for my decision sooner? I should have thought to ask when I would hear during the application process, I know...
  16. I had an official acceptance two days after a (last minute) interview.
  17. Narayan's Dislocating Cultures seems like a perfect tie between the two women you mentioned, but may be a bit too similar if you're looking to stretch out into new areas. Regarding AnzaldĂșa's hybridity, check out both Puar on assemblages and Harraway on cyborgs. Depending on the literature you're used to or interested in, these may seem kind of abstract, but there are definite connections that may be useful for revealing new areas. Crenshaw's work on intersectionality is a good starting point too, but I would recommend it alongside "Intersectionality as Buzzword" by Kathy Davis. Good luck!
  18. I know this is like shaking a Magic 8 ball and I won't know until I know, but I feel like I am losing my mind and would love some opinions: Earlier this fall I emailed two professors I had an interest in working with. One responded and we had several lengthy exchanges about the program. The other just emailed me back today saying she had read my application and would advise me if I joined the program. Does the fact that this professor responded months later, after reading my application, to say she was interested in working with me mean something? I am tempted to think she would not bother to email me back this late if I was going to be rejected, but I also know professor interest doesn't mean everything to admissions. Should I just be patient and not assume anything?
