For what it's worth re: Yale, I attended the Visitor's Day on the 4th and Jeanie O'Hare mentioned that all she really cares about is the writing sample. She's a serious lady too - I don't think anything outside is going to affect her one way or the other. So instead of fretting over things like what the recommendations are or what the statement is, just put your weight behind the play and take into consideration that the only factors at work are the quality of the writing and the way the voice fits into the overall lattice of the program (right now, the program is very heavily female-filled. I think 6 of the 9 writers currently in the program are women, including every 2nd year. She indicated a desire for strong Latino voices and a lack of energy for "New York plays for the intelligentsia") Oh, and she's really biased against screenwriters and TV writers masquerading as playwrights to get exposure: she specifically mentioned a prejudice against writers who write their plays in Final Draft. All that said, the program definitely looks fantastic - particularly the interdepartmentality if I might invent a word I think fits. The facilities are old and brown, but there was an extremely strong theatrical energy and the Cabaret space is a playwright's wet dream.

Congrats on your acceptances lurking! I'm at NYU right now, and I think the program is pretty great. The faculty aren't universally great but some of them (George Malko, Martin Epstein, Sabrina Dhawan, Charlie Rubin, Gordon Farrell) are really excellent teachers of writing and writing theory. Thotherlily, if you don't mind, I know you mentioned you were currently in an MFA program - where are you?

All the big non profit theaters in New York, Mead Center, Cleveland Rep, a few teaching fellows - I have a few projects kicking around but I really want to stay engaged in the industry/the city. That's why I leaned in on Yale - what's so great about it is beyond all of the program specific benefits, it's an hour fifteen train ride + cheaper living and bulletproof financial assistance.

Been away a while: Anybody interested in moving this discussion to a Facebook ala what the fiction people do with the MFA Draft? I don't check this as often now that I'm not obsessing over Yale dates but still like to see what everyone's talking about. Of course, we lose our anonymity (THANKS ZUCK) Rougesenna, that's a very dangerous job hahah. One of my best friends is a junior executive with Rudin and....it's intense, to say the least. Particularly for assistants. Who sometimes will all get blanket fired and then rehired later that day. Congrats cobbler!!!!! That's so awesome! And yeah, lavendercloud I did get my Yale rejection. No nice note like I was hoping! Oh well. Onto fellowship and internship applications now.

I'm sort of just tired of not being able to write my work, get it up extremely easily, get it published, write screenplays, write novels in my free time, live in the Northeast Kingdom with an apartment in the city, drink top-shelf scotch, play scrabble with Chris Durang, play golf with David Mamet, play hardball with Scott Rudin, and play footsie with Arthur Miller's cryogenically preserved techno-exo-skeleton.

Sorry to hear that lavendercloud, we were pulling for you! I know I'm not planning on doing much differently next year, except for maybe getting some different letters. I'm hoping that my age and greenness and "just getting out of undergrad" were some of the factors, and that a year or two separation will make a difference. And honestly I'll probably only apply to Yale. They're all basically just as selective and Yale is the one I really want!

I spoke to one of the profs here at NYU about grad decisions for you guys, and he said "it's going." I said "they're not gonna like that answer" And he said "it's going until it's not, what can I say?" So, that's helpful.
