  1. It seems that philstudent1991 is interested in ethics, philosophy of biology, and some 'continental' philosophers independently, not necessarily in the Bioethics of Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Camus, and Marx. (Although I'd be quite impressed if someone could pass a dissertation with that title)
  2. Ah, thanks for the insight. Congratulations, Hypatience! Now I'm Hympatient for UMass news...
  3. Does this mean that you've gotten an e-mail?
  4. "There are two types of parrhesia which we must distinguish. First, there is a pejorative sense of the word not very far from "chattering' and which consists in saying any or everything one has in mind without qualification." -Foucault in Fearless Speech

  6. Can you cite the results from the study you linked to that suggest that, "...there are 8 times as many brilliant men as brilliant women..."? That is the claim that Rollontheground made. And you're right, it's not revolutionary at all to suggest that men are more intelligent than women. From Aristotle to Larry Summers, it has been quite common throughout history to denigrate the intellectual capacities of women. Colonialism and slavery were (actually, are) justified in part by the "common knowledge" that non-europeans were intellectually deficient savages. It's not as if this "common knowledge" exists in a void of pure reason.
  7. Ah, that makes far more sense, thanks for the dose of reality. I'd better learn to read a bit more carefully!
  8. "Thank you very much for applying to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale University. I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission. As you know, the very high number of extraordinary candidates among our more than 10,600 applicants far exceeds the number of places we have in each program, so we are not able to admit many excellent candidates. We are using this system of electronic notification to communicate with you five to ten days more rapidly than we could by letter. We hope that this approach helps applicants plan their futures quickly and effectively. We wish you every success in all your endeavors." 10,600
  9. Nobody actually accused you of oppression, as far as I can see. They simply questioned your source, which was a tabloid. I think that maxhgns is spot on: we are not as aware of our implicit biases as we'd like to believe. There is plenty of 'hard data' to support this.
  10. With great joy I can claim the more recently posted acceptance.
  11. objectivityofcontradiction, I'm not at all familiar with Geuss' work, but what you're describing reminds me of Ronald Dworkin's theory of moral objectivity as grounded in what he calls 'interpretive communities'. Moral sentiments belong to different interpretive communities, and are objective in the sense that they must answer to normative standards that fit within the framework of a particular interpretive community. Cool stuff, although I'm not sure it does all the work Dworkin wants it to.
  12. FlyT, I am sorry to report that the rejection I received seemed as real as anything else in the world. They haven't changed the status of my application online though, as far as I can tell.
  13. Yeah it's indubitably groan-worthy. Light-heartedness is my pharmacon for the next couple months. As I edited in above, I'm thinking of 'Human, All Too Human' when I say that Nietzsche has a lot to say about the history of science. However it sounds like you're much better read than I am so take my intuition with a grain of salt.
  14. Hah, well I do have a great fondness for Nietzsche, but it's sort of a throwaway pun rather than a deep part of my identity. Not to mention N's got a lot to say about the history of science! I actually see him as prescient of Kuhn in some ways... EDIT: I'm thinking of 'Human, All too Human' in particular. Sorry to sidetrack the depressing purpose of this thread.
  15. Received a boilerplate rejection letter by pony express from Pittsburgh's HPS program today. First I've heard from anywhere though, so that's a plus
